Krieger: 2015 Baseball Hall of Fame ballot, Part 2

The soon to be controversial HOF Ballot from Dave Krieger: (10) P. Martinez, R. Johnson, Bagwell, Mussina, Piazza, Raines, Schilling, Smoltz, Trammell and L.Walker.

Prone as I am to stirring up trouble, and knowing the howls of outrage this would trigger among veteran members of the Baseball Writers Association of America, I might hypothesize that race had something to do with it — Whitaker is black, Biggio is white — and order up a quantitative analysis of voting on comparable players by ...

ESPN: ‘Sir’ Did Gregorius Set To Follow Jeter

For the past 20 years, the New York Yankees have had a true member of baseball royalty at shortstop. But Derek Jeter has nothing over his replacement, who revealed Friday in his first interview with reporters who cover the Yankees that the proper way to address him is “Sir Didi Gregorius.”

The subject came up when a reporter noted that Gregorius—who was acquired by the Yankees from the Arizona Diamondbacks in a three-way trade that cost them Shane Greene—uses “Sir Didi Gregorius” as his ...

First Major Leaguer Appointed Ambassador

The name Mark Gilbert may not be familiar to most baseball fans, but the former Chicago White Sox outfielder is primed to do something no other former player has done before.
On Friday, the U.S. Senate voted to approve Gilbert’s nomination to serve as a U.S. ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa, which will make him the first major league veteran to serve in that capacity ...

Gilbert played all of seven games, hitting .273 with three runs scored and three RBIs. The following season, he required ...

Bryce Harper’s grievance hearing against the Nationals is scheduled for Tuesday

D.J. Short - Dec 12, 2014

After FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reminded us about the situation a couple of weeks ago, James Wagner of the Washington Post reports that Bryce Harper‘s grievance hearing against the Nationals is scheduled for Tuesday in New York.

For those unfamiliar with the situation, here’s a quick recap: After Harper was drafted in 2010, he reached an oral agreement on a five-year major league contract with the Nationals just minutes before the signing deadline. The ...

Even with Lester, Cubs won’t contend in 2015

In the short term, adding Lester and Montero makes the Cubs maybe two or three games better than they were last year. Or maybe I’m WAY OFF ... and it’€™s four or five games. Now tack on another four or five to account for the mystical powers of Joe Maddon. That still leaves them well short of scaring the Cardinals.

In the short term.

In the long term, of course, Lester’€™s around for a while and Montero’€™s signed through 2017, which is two fewer things for Theo and Jed to worry about. ...

MiLB Opposes Players, Supports MLB In Lawsuit

Brand announced that beginning next year, he will petition Congress to add minor league baseball players to the list of 35 occupations not required to receive minimum wage or overtime pay as dictated in the Federal Labor Standards Act. If successful, minor leaguers would fall into a group that includes seasonal workers, trainees and babysitters—likely dooming the lawsuit.

Baseball’s Most Handsome Managers: 2015 Update

30. Clint Hurdle: Last year someone told him that I ranked him last and he was reportedly happy about it, as I would hope a legit old school baseball man would. Indeed, he even took it as a compliment. So far be it from me to elevate him from this position of honor. Which is difficult! He just had hip surgery and, as my father has told me, when you get to a certain age in life, your attractiveness is positively influenced by your access to handicapped parking placards. So use what you got, ...

Q&A: David Forst, Assistant General Manager, Oakland Athletics

It’s very difficult to win by accident more than once.

There’s definitely a plan. We certainly spend the first couple of weeks after the year, when the season ends, talking on a macro level about what direction we should go. The specifics of who to trade and who to target don’t necessarily come into focus until a little bit later in the offseason, but certainly the plan is talked about immediately. And frankly, it was probably something we talked about in September, before the season was ...

The Yankees signing Max Scherzer makes more and more sense by the day - Pinstripe Alley

I truly hope the Yankees sign Scherzer for 7/$200.

So with Jon Lester officially off the market, what’s the solution for the Yankees? It has to be Max Scherzer. He’s the one huge starter remaining on the market, given that the rest is populated by the likes of the older James Shields and other mediocre pitchers. It would be a challenge to feel that confident in a Yankees rotation featuring those other players, unless there’s a trade in the works (which can’t be ruled out). It changes entirely ...

Do The Red Sox Have a Ground Ball Fetish? | FanGraphs Baseball

Fans want what they want RIGHT NOW. A front office which feeds into that does stupid things. I’m glad the Red Sox front office hasn’t bought into that mindset. It leads to bad decisions. Getting Lester (and/or Scherzer or Cole Hamels) at all costs would make the Red Sox a better team in 2015. It also would most probably make it more difficult to sustain success in 2017+.

Certainly neither pitcher carries the cache that Hamels does, but their projections aren’t that much different — in fact, ...

ESPN: Highest Ranking Hispanic Woman In MLB Files Discrimination Suit

Zito, who stepped away from the game after the 2013 season, has been working out at a facility in Houston since September and is said to be encouraged by the mechanical adjustments he has made. The 36-year-old is working with Ron Wolforth, a rather unorthodox trainer who helped A’s left-hander Scott Kazmir return to form.
