Blunders. That’s the headline. Let’s not forget that the Astros exceeded expectations last year. Although they have played poorly, they are still on the cusp of the playoffs. They have another crop of prospects just about ready. So, although the team isn’t quite the finished product some fans and writers may have expected this year, the team is still on the right track.
“The play on the field was not what we expected,” Luhnow said, according to MLB.com. “I don’t know if anybody could have ...

It was a bad loss.
The season is not over.
The sky is not falling.
It’s just one game.

This has to be one of the worst blisters ever.
Hill’s lingering finger blisters still are tender, so manager Dave Roberts named rookie Ross Stripling as Friday night’s starting pitcher against Pittsburgh. Hill might not join the rotation for another week or more, as he wasn’t mentioned as a candidate for any of the games vs. the Pirates.

The end is difficult for many players. ARod is getting released in a couple of days. He’s not getting released because of any animus. He’s getting released because the team doesn’t believe he can play any more. He’s doesn’t deserve playing time. He’s owed a bunch of money. He’ll get the money. He’ll get one last day in Yankees Stadium. Girardi doesn’t owe him any additional playing time.
On Day 2 of the newest Yankees production, “A-Rod: You Have Got to Be Sitting Me,” Joe Girardi finally ...

El Paso Herald, August 11, 1916:
As we get it, [Browns manager Fielder Jones’s] view of a winning policy is to tighten the defence to the point where the other fellow can’t score, except through miscarriage of plans; and then to outthink him a run or two on attack.
Taking as a basis for consideration the games from July 22 to Aug. 5, inclusive, the first facts the figures reveal are these.
That the Browns scored 69 runs on 127 hits, an average of one run for every 1.84 hits. That the ...
Pretty much a lost season for Peralta.
D-backs outfielder David Peralta will undergo season-ending surgery on his right wrist Thursday morning in Phoenix.
Peralta is currently on the disabled list for the third time this season and it is the second time he has been on it as a result of his wrist. Peralta initially injured the wrist the final week of the 2015 season, and at the time, it was thought that rest and rehab would be enough to avoid surgery.

Girardi thinks the key to winning is batting the sub .200 hitters over A-Rod.
The Red Sox scrapped a planned giveaway of 15,000
David Ortiz bobblehead dolls last night because the toys appeared racially insensitive, team President Sam Kennedy said.
The bobbleheads depicted Big Papi speaking at Fenway Park in 2013 following the Boston Marathon bombings, when he declared Boston “our (expletive) city.”
But something went wrong in production.
“I personally felt that they were offensive given the portrayal in terms of his facial features,” Kennedy ...
So I go on Twitter and see a comment about injuries being avoidable for pinch-running pitchers. I reply with, “That’s what I was thinking when the Red Sox had Steven Wright pinch-run recently.” Then I scroll down and find out that Steven Wright actually got hurt during his pinch-running appearance.
Maybe I should stay off Twitter.

This doesn’t sound like the Mets are looking to pick up Gomez.
With the price tag far lower than last season — Gomez is making $9 million this season, but can be signed for the league minimum if he clears waivers — would the Mets consider adding his right-handed bat to the struggling lineup?
“We always have an open mind,” Mets general manager Sandy Alderson told The Post.

During Francona’s daily pregame meeting with reporters, the manager stopped momentarily and complained of chest pain. Francona felt well enough to finish the question-and-answer session, but then retreated to the clubhouse, where he was examined by medical staff on hand at Nationals Park.
Francona, 57, remained at the ballpark after being checked out. The Indians’ media relations staff noted that the manager was feeling better by first pitch, but had experienced some dizziness and ...
Three sources close to the situation confirmed Tuesday that Fielder’s career is over after a decade in the majors due to a pair of disk herniations in his neck. An official announcement will be made Wednesday afternoon in Arlington where, presumably, Fielder, still in a neck brace from his second spinal fusion surgery in the last 27 months, will address the decision.
Fielder, 32, will be declared “medically disabled,” as doctors will not clear him to return to baseball over the perilous risk ...
Bismarck Daily Tribune, August 10, 1916:
LOST—“Dolly” Elder and Joe Collins, crack diamond artists of the Bismarck baseball team. Last seen on the streets of Jamestown with two fair ladies. Anyone having any information as to the whereabouts, kindly advise the sporting editor of the Tribune as they are needed for the game with Mandan next Sunday.
I’m not sure if they ever found Elder and Collins. I’m just saying they’re local baseball stars and both almost exactly the right age to be the ...Read More...
Read the whole article. It’s majors or bust. If I were the team, I’d leave him home where he’s comfortable.
The Cubs placed infielder Tommy La Stella on the inactive list Tuesday as he contemplates retirement if he can’t play for the big league team.
In fact, La Stella, who was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on July 29, said the Cubs are the only team he wants to play for as his priorities have changed over the last year.
“I’m a baseball player by profession. My identity is not tied up in that,” La ...

Pedro helps Darvish via Beltran.
The two just happened upon one another in the cafeteria of the visiting clubhouse in Houston on Saturday. Some 20 minutes later, Darvish emerged with a fresh perspective about how he wanted to attack hitters.
In short, Darvish decided he could attack hitters, especially inside, with his fastball instead of having to throw inside.
“He’s got so much experience,” Darvish said Monday. “We talked about the mental side. I feel like my mind is the weakest part of my ...
More evidence that MLB is awash in dough:
Walt Disney announced Tuesday afternoon that it is taking a minority stake in MLB Advanced Media’s spin-off media company, BAMTech. Disney is making a $1 billion investment in two payments—now and in January 2017—that will give it a 33% interest in the media company, with an option to become the majority stakeholder in the future.
Disney said that BamTech will collaborate with ESPN to launch a “multi-sport” subscription streaming service, ...
Des Moines is lovely this time of year.
Tommy La Stella was demoted to Triple-A by the Cubs on July 29. It was a roster crunch situation and La Stella has options left so, despite the fact that he has been an effective player this year, it made sense to send him down. Sorry, baseball is not a pure meritocracy. Sometimes the politics of contracts, options and service time play into such decisions.
At the time, Joe Maddon mentioned to the media that La Stella didn’t take the demotion well. ...

Yasiel Puig really is the gift that keeps on giving. As is the New York Post, a newspaper that really does know how to make a big deal about not so much.

County officials in recent weeks have rejected most of the team’s request for $65 million in upgrades to Chase Field, saying the repairs don’t meet the lease agreement’s requirements for funding. Requested repairs include suite renovations, painting and a new scoreboard, all of which county officials say are cosmetic and the team’s responsibility.
Documents also show the conflict has gotten personal.
County Supervisor Andy Kunasek sent a letter to Diamondbacks President Derrick Hall as the ...

“It’s not really the technology itself—it’s all, in theory, great,” Colorado Rockies reliever and team union rep Adam Ottavino said. “I think we’re always a little bit scared of giving away too much of ourselves.”
The Zephyr Bioharness and the Motus elbow sleeve (the two approved devices) log heart and breathing rates and a pitcher’s workload and strain, respectively. They’re permitted so long as the data does not stream live ...

At 29, he’s getting a late start. He’s got an uphill climb but I made fun of a guy in my sim league for drafting Matt Bush in our amateur draft this year, so I will hold off on making fun of Tebow on this one.
Former NFL quarterback and current ESPN broadcaster Tim Tebow is actively pursuing a career in professional baseball and plans to hold a workout for Major League Baseball teams later this month, according to his agents Jimmy Sexton and Nick Khan.
For almost the past year, Tebow has been ...

Not satisfied with their moves before Monday’s non-waiver trade deadline, the Mets are at least trying to be active in the waiver-trade market. One industry source told the Daily News that since Tuesday, the Mets have made two waiver claims, one for a reliever, but have not been able to complete the deals.
They have also put names out on the waiver wire last week to see if they can stir up a possible trade, The News has learned. Those names include catcher Travis d’Arnaud and infielder ...

Brandon Crawford tied an all-time single-game National League record with a franchise-record seven hits, including the go-ahead single off Andrew Cashner in the 14th inning, to power the Giants to an 8-7 win over the Marlins on Monday night at Marlins Park.
