OT - Catch-All Pop Culture Extravaganza (September 2018)

The new TV season is upon us.

[H]ere is Deadline’s annual rundown of fall premiere dates for new and returning series. The list covers hundreds of broadcast, cable and streaming shows bowing between September 1 and December 31 and some high-profile one-off programs.

The long road to success for the National League’s hottest hitter

LOS ANGELES – David Peralta could have gone home and hardly anyone would have blamed him. Hardly anyone would have noticed. Maybe he’d become a trainer or a coach or work with his dad. He was young enough to go back to school, start over, forget this love affair with baseball. It clearly didn’t love him back, having dumped him once and threatening again. Always threatening.

Not a single morning, he said, did he wake up and wonder if this was all a waste of time. Not when he was in ...

What the heck is The Eck talking about? | Boston.com

Red Sox broadcast need more Eck.

“JOHNSON’’

Ecksplanation: An important home run, but not a grand slam.

Proper use in a sentence: “Ortiz has to be the Red Sox’ all-time leader in Johnsons.’’

Contending Dodgers acquire reliever Madson from Nationals

Pity my former PhD program no longer has a softball team- I have a feeling we could have obtained players from the Nationals just by asking for them.

WASHINGTON (AP)—The Los Angeles Dodgers bolstered their bullpen on Friday, acquiring right-hander Ryan Madson from the Washington Nationals for a minor league pitcher.

The five-time defending NL West champions have Kenley Jansen as their closer, but he’s been shaky since coming off the disabled list, allowing seven earned runs in four innings ...

Wright rejoins Mets, hopes to get back on field in September

Given how the year has gone for the Mets so far, I can’t rule out Wright coming back….

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — David Wright rejoined the New York Mets on Friday, though he remains on the disabled list, and said he met with team officials to discuss what he needs to prove physically in order to get back in a major league game for the first time since 2016.

The seven-time All-Star third baseman took grounders before the Mets faced the San Francisco Giants and said he’s “cautiously optimistic” ...

Indians get three-time All-Star Josh Donaldson in trade with Jays

Would that I could be as optimistic as Chris Antonetti seems to be…..

The Toronto Blue Jays on Friday traded third baseman Josh Donaldson to the Cleveland Indians, who are hoping the 2015 American League MVP can bolster their lineup and help them get back to the World Series.

The Blue Jays will receive a player to be named later.

“This is one of the most dynamic players in the game on both sides of the ball when he’s healthy,’’ Indians president Chris Antonetti said late Friday night. “We ...

‘It’s Enrico Pallazzo!’: The inside story of ‘The Naked Gun’ baseball game

“There’s so much that’s taken seriously about baseball,” Abrahams said.

That’s an understatement that was as true in 1988 as it is today. So much of baseball culture is seen as stiff and joyless. Just consider the traditionally stoic nature of everything, the ongoing debates over bat flips, home run trots, pace of play and the rest of the unwritten rules. It’s ripe for parody.

Laughing at the normally stiff and serious is “a very healthy laugh,” Abrahams said.

“In a ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-31-2018

Chicago Eagle, August 31, 1918:

When the baseball rules are getting their next revision, whenever that may be, an effort will be made to change the present interpretation in regard to home runs which decide ball games. Under the system now in vogue a batsman may hit the ball outside a park, but if the runners on bases [sic] settle the game the hitter does not get credit for his home run, and it does not go into the records as such.

I guess I understand how that came to be - when the scoring ...

Andrew McCutchen deal comes amid questions about Aaron Judge

As Judge continues to recover from a chip fracture in his right wrist, the Yankees have agreed to a trade with the San Francisco Giants for McCutchen, a source told ESPN’s Buster Olney. McCutchen, a 31-year-old, five-time All-Star outfielder, will bolster the Yankees’ offense and defense until their big power-hitting, hard-throwing, 26-year-old right fielder can come back.

And when that will be remains anybody’s guess.

Rebuilding Now Could Save The Giants Years Of Losing

Question: If everyone ends up tanking, will anyone really benefit from it?

The time to act came a year ago, and the opportunity was purposefully missed.

The time to recognize that is now, and the next steps are ones the San Francisco Giants have hidden from, ignored or completely ghosted for well more than a year. Instead, the franchise that believes its fan base will never accept a tear down-and-rebuild nestled itself deeper and deeper into a hole with every ill-advised signing and trade ...

Former Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes hates Fenway Park and Wrigley Field

In the Harrington Era, I agreed with Hughes assessment. The changes made by Henry’s group, though, changed my mind. It doesn’t have some of the amenities of the newer older parks but they don’t have Fenway’s charm.

I have always liked September roster expansion. You get to see a lot of young players for the first time. Teams with depth get value for that depth.

Red Sox hitters have handled high velocity exceptionally this year. How?

They should start calling getting on plane as going Teddy Ballgame.

The team discusses the sorts of swing paths that will maximize their chances of doing damage based on how the pitch acts. The adoption by several hitters of a swing meant to get on the plane of the pitch — rather than a more traditional approach that is down and direct to the ball — has created more margin for error in allowing hitters to drive pitches even when their timing on a fastball is slightly off.

“I don’t ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-30-2018

Toledo News-Bee, August 30, 1918:

Manager Lee Fohl of the Cleveland Indians is of the opinion that had it not been for the war Babe Ruth would have broken the home run record this year.

“If the baseballs we have used had been up to the standard of other years,” says Fohl, “Babe surely would have turned the trick, but the balls were of too poor a quality this season, being knocked out of shape quickly and losing their life.”

There may be something to Fohl’s #SiberianPonyLeather theory. In 1917, ...

Good Fundies: Brandon Nimmo’s Incredible On-Contact Skills; Can It Last?

Exit velocity is only part of the story (along with launch angle, situational hitting, luck, etc.) but Nimmo’s results on-contact so far have been nothing short of elite. On just 226 balls in play, Nimmo has tallied 91 hits, 21 doubles, 8 triples, and 15 HR. That’s an extra base hit a whopping 19.4% of the time. This is on par — or even better than — many of MLB’s current stars who are known for their hard contact…

Padres’ Richard to have surgery on both knees

While the Padres announced Richard was placed on the disabled list with left knee inflammation and Green later confirmed surgery on that knee that will end Richard’s season, two sources said Richard is actually going to undergo two surgeries in the next few weeks to clean up lingering issues (bone spurs, rough cartilage and possibly more). Richard, 34, has been affected by the issues since late April and has had surgeries on both knees in past years.

One source said Richard was still ...

Noah Syndergaard after tough stretch: ‘I’m just kind of wasting my ability to throw a baseball’

Mets fans, insert your own jokes here.

New York Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard is stuck in a tough stretch. In his last five starts coming into Monday’s game, the 25-year-old had an uncharacteristic 4.50 ERA.

That figure went up after a 7-4 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Syndergaard gave up four runs on nine hits over six innings during the contest. He avoided the loss after the Mets tied things up in the seventh.

Following the game, Syndergaard told reporters he feels like he’s been wasting ...
