HuffPost | Darryl Strawberry Confirms One Of Baseball’s Most Disturbing Urban Legends

Though Dwight “Doc” Gooden certainly had a fascinating career on the baseball diamond, a revelation in his 1999 autobiography, “Heat,” has been urban legend ever since the book’s release. Gooden writes in the book that teammate Kevin Mitchell, in an argument with his girlfriend, ended up decapitating her cat, something Mitchell has since disputed.

Marlins designate Turner for assignment, recall Flynn

The transaction is mildly surprising because of Turner’s age, 23, and his upside. The 6-foot-5 right-hander was the ninth overall pick of the Tigers in 2009. He was pushed through the Minor Leagues quickly, and he made his MLB debut at age 20 in 2011.

Wow. Do the Marlins not believe in BABIP regression? What are the trading rules for DFAs in August? Are they free to trade him to any team within the next 10 days or does he have to pass waivers first?

There’s another half dozen or so at the link, including the ones from an earlier game.

Today’s final game of the Giants-Mets series was a day game, and Pence’s biggest enemies brought the heat in the form of mild accusations on neon signs. They’re attacking your card-shuffling ability, man. Say something!

Why The Wild Card Game Should Be A Two-Game Series

But adding an extra game would push the World Series to Christmas!

Wha’? A two-game series? Erm…don’t know how to tell you this, Nico, but…um…two is an even number. I know. And the wild card game should, for many reasons at once, be a two-game series. Here’s how I think it should work, and why…

To advance to the ALDS, the 2nd wild card team should have to beat the 1st wild card team twice. That “two chances to win one” backdrop gives the 1st wild card team a significant ...

Pujols teaches Puig lesson with baserunning

Albert Pujols insisted that he was just playing within the confines of the game, because the Angels’ lead was only five and the Dodgers’ high-powered offense would still get to bat a couple more times.

In the process, though, the Angels’ veteran first baseman might have taught the young, eccentric Yasiel Puig a valuable lesson.

That lesson: Never forget about the runner on base, no matter who he is and where he’s stationed.

NY Daily News: Really trying to understand why I was so wrong about NY Mets’ Lucas Duda. What are the challenges of separating reporting from personal feelings?

He made similar comments in many interviews, including one I conducted with him last September. Duda had just hit two homers in a game, and we began with what I thought was a softball to warm him up.

“Lucas, when you first came up, you were open about how hitting in big spots made you nervous. Now that you’ve been in the league a few years, is it easier?”

His answer? Laughter, followed by, “No.”

A moment later, when the camera was off, Duda dropped his head, said, “tough ...

Fangraphs: Christian Vazquez is Partially Elite

Vazquez has long had the reputation of being an outstanding defensive catcher with a little bit of offensive upside. He’s always been praised for his skills in the field, so that’s our background: We already had reason to believe in Vazquez’s defense. He’s had only a few blocking opportunities. He’s had only a few throwing opportunities. He’s had more than 1,000 framing opportunities. Though it’s been only a few weeks, all the evidence suggests Vazquez is one of the best receivers ...

Rays’ road win streak ends in a weird 3-2 loss to A’s

Its a shame about Rays.

“What am I going to say right now?” Balfour asked aloud. “All the things I’m not supposed to say, or the things you want to hear? … What do you want out of me? You want the truth? Or just want hear whatever you (expletive deleted) want to hear?”

Balfour had just blown another game, allowing the winning run on an 0-2 single by Derek Norris with two outs and the bases loaded, scoring former Ray Sam Fuld, who reached on an 0-2 single, with two walks in between.

Reds lethargic effort leaves Price perplexed

As Specs Rigveda once said: “Lethargy can prove fatal for baseball life.”

The Reds lost the opener of their four-game, home-and-home series with Cleveland, 7-1, at Progressive Field. How they lost was what had Price incensed as he sat in the manager’s office after the game.

“We’re a .500 team after 112 games; we’re 56-and-56,” said Price. “What was disappointing and unacceptable tonight was the fact that we didn’t have our head in the game at all, especially those first five innings.”

Collins: Lagares’ defense ranks with the best

Even the Mets, who watch Juan Lagares play every day, are sometimes amazed by the outfielder’s capabilities.

Lagares put on another defensive show in Monday’s loss to the Giants, throwing a runner out at home plate in the seventh inning to stop the bleeding during a potentially huge rally.

With one run already home and two men on base, Pablo Sandoval hit a sharp single to center field. Lagares charged, took a quick extra step and fired home, putting his entire body’s momentum behind the ...

Grantland: The Diamondbacks’ Disgrace, or: A List of Things Kirk Gibson Can Kiss

It’s annoying when the Diamondbacks complain about who jumps in their pool or bad-mouth a player who’s on the way out, under the cover of anonymity. They’re going to lose a lot, which matters to me not at all, because I’m one of the fortunate folks whose happiness isn’t based on the Diamondbacks’ success. Mike Francesa hasn’t heard of Warren Buffett either.

The utility guy the Yankees actually wanted at the deadline | New York Post

Before acquiring Martin Prado from the Diamondbacks on Thursday, the Yankees inquired about the Mariners’ Dustin Ackley.
Nevertheless, when Seattle asked for minor league right-hander Bryan Mitchell, the discussions essentially ended because the Yankees view the 23-year-old right-hander as a rotation candidate either this year or next.
