Aaron Judge fools Yankees fans on ‘The Tonight Show’ with Jimmy Fallon

At 6-7, 282 pounds, Aaron Judge is hard to miss.

But the Yankees rookie managed to fool fans in a Jimmy Fallon segment on “The Tonight Show” that aired Monday night simply by wearing a pair of hipster glasses.

Judge asked one fan, wearing a Yankees hat, who his favorite player is right now.

“Adam Judge,” the fan responded.

Judge later held up a headshot of himself in uniform and said: “People say I kind of look like him.”

Scoreboard.GQ: All MLB and MiLB scores on one page

For years, I’ve been irritated that I couldn’t find a site that displayed live scores for every level of organized baseball on one page. If I wanted to find out how the Indians, Toledo Mud Hens, and Akron Rubberducks did, that involved multiple clicks and perhaps multiple sites.

So I solved my own problem and built it myself.

It displays probable pitchers, team records, scores, inning, outs, current batter with slash stats, current pitcher with W-L and ERA, baserunners on each base, pitchers ...

Francisco Cervelli joins Venezuelan protests and pleads with others to do the same

For weeks, Rivero and Cervelli scanned Instagram on their cell phones and shared scenes from anti-government demonstrations. Videos of tear-gas canisters flying into crowds, of police brutality, of Maduro dancing while military vehicles advanced protesters in the streets. The players were active in the conversation but weren’t sure what impact they could have from afar.

Before the Pirates played the Milwaukee Brewers on May 5, Cervelli spoke with Hernan Perez during batting practice. They ...

Dugout favorite Tubby Spencer is a changed man!

Pittsburgh Press, May 16, 1917:

Nobody has ever won a decision from “Old King Booze,” according to Spencer.

“I’ve tried his game, and I know,” remarked Spencer, “You may think you are getting away with his delivery, but in the end he will always strike you out.”
...
When [Spencer] left the sanitarium, the physician in charge told him that a drink would kill him. “I wondered whether it would or not, but I waited a week to find out, then I got ...

Do the Phillies have too many young outfielders? – Phillies Nation

The Red Sox aren’t trading Devers (who plays a problem position in their org) for Hellickson and an outfield prospect (a position where they are quite comfortable).

For instance, the Red Sox could feel that this is their year but they need to add one more solid starter at the deadline. They’d want Hellickson but they don’t want to give up their top ranked prospect, third basemen Rafael Devers. The Phillies could counter with a deal that includes several prospects, including Quinn, Cozens or ...

Kyle Schwarber seeks better results at leadoff | MLB.com

I know this is pointing out the obvious but…if he’s a click underneath the baseball, it’s not a good swing.

“Mentally, it gets frustrating,” Schwarber said. “You feel you put a good swing on the ball and you’re not getting a good result. I just have to keep going with the approach, stay positive every day. I’m never going up there thinking I’m going to get an out. I’m going to stay with my mind-set and keep approaching what I’m doing.”
“I’ve seen great swings,” Maddon said. “He’s just a click ...

The 8 most fearsome MLB hitters since 2000 | FOX Sports

One of these things is not like the others.

Derek Jeter
Not all heroes wear capes and not all fearsome hitters are home run kings. Wearer of the most recently retired New York Yankees jersey, Jeter possessed the same debatable “clutch” gene as Ortiz. He was more powerful than your average shortstop but most importantly had a knack for being a very challenging out and coming up huge in the postseason.

His powers were in full bloom in the 2000 postseason when he ripped four home runs combined ...

Injury Was Inevitable for Noah Syndergaard

Baloney. If this were true, teams wouldn’t have such stringent innings limits on young pitchers.

The result is a system where ball clubs are encouraged — are essentially commanded — to squeeze every last bit of life out of their young pitchers, until their arms are ruined … conveniently, right around the time they’re due to hit the open market. Recently, Martinez — remember, he was the only pitcher whose arm hasn’t been hurt yet — signed a long-term contract in which the team ...

Inside the Mind of Bill – Joe Blogs – Medium

“To me,” Bill writes, “that is just incredible. . .that Anthony Rendon drove in as many runs in ONE game as George Brett ever drove in in a three-game set.”

People often call Bill a numbers guy, a statistician, a baseball geek or whatever. And it has long seemed to me that they miss the point. Bill doesn’t care about numbers. He is uninterested in statistics as a concept or the numbers of other things. He cares about what baseball statistics can open up about the game. He longs to ...

What pitchers think about being credited with wins and losses. | Sports on Earth

Hendricks’ manager, Joe Maddon, has managed the likes of star hurlers such as David Price, Jake Arrieta and Jon Lester. The feeling he gets is that the pitcher win isn’t going anywhere as an official statistic.

“The win is always going to be relevant to a pitcher. Always,” Maddon said. “That’s how they were raised. If you were raised with that mindset, that’s what you’re going to live for. That’s how they evaluate themselves.”

Maddon said that if presented with the choice of recording more ...

Tacoma Times, May 15, 1917:

[The St. Louis Browns are] made up of a heterogenous combination of ball players, a few great ones, a few mediocre, some rookies…molded into an organization which is now playing about the fastest and brainiest game in the league.

There’s no secret about it, but the answer is Fielder Jones, former president of the Northwestern league.

Jones is a peculiar chap. He is gloomy by nature and a grouch by cultivation. He is upstage. He is not at all likeable. His ball ...

OTP 15 May 2017: A sport dominated by politics

And that would be … cricket – what were you expecting?

Tanya Alfred draws our attention to the world-threatening problem of climate change — which more than 97 per cent of climate scientists agree on’ — and bemoans the lack of a strategy from the English Cricket Board (ECB) for how cricket is organised today and its lack of preparation for the future.
In 2016, for instance, the Indian Premier League was forced to relocate matches from Maharashtra because of a water shortage. Bangladesh is ...

Bryce Harper’s strange signing for 2018 won’t mean much in the long run | FOX Sports

This is a bit odd.

The oddest of tea leaves fell on Saturday — news that Bryce Harper and the Nationals had agreed upon a $21.625 million contract for 2018, avoiding his final year of arbitration.

I cannot recall another deal like this being struck in mid-May, and the curious timing raised the usual questions about Harper’s future with the Nats, and whether he will sign an extension before reaching free agency.

MLB umpire supervisor Steve Palermo dies at 67

RIP to a class act and a genuine hero.

Palermo made his debut as an American League umpire in 1976 and was a full-time ump from ‘77-91.
During the summer of 1991, Palermo and another man were shot while trying to help two waitresses who were being robbed outside a Dallas restaurant. He was left partially paralyzed. But through intense and painful therapy, Palermo was able to walk again with the help of a cane.
Palermo was hired in 1994 as a special assistant to the chairman of the Major League ...

Why MLB trades may fly early with a loaded pitching market | New York Post

An NL executive declared, “If my team were out of it, I would definitely jump the market.”

The early favorite to sell first is the Royals. Multiple scouts have told me that many of their Kansas City brethren already have had their pro coverage rearranged to delve deeper into systems of likely buyers such as the Yankees, Red Sox and Cubs. Royals general manager Dayton Moore disputed that, writing in a text: “our scouting strategy hasn’t changed since 2007.”

Still, another AL ...
