OTP 3 April 2017: The Nationals Leave Politics Aside

Honestly, if Adam Eaton said something on Twitter that I disagree with, I would probably think he was the other Adam Eaton anyway.

Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo said he issued no new directives after the 2016 election than he has in the past. … “I’m all about players speaking out when they feel like speaking out. They’re grown men,” Rizzo said. “You’ve seen it when people on our roster have said negative things toward me and my decisions. I salute their right to express ...

Longtime baseball official Katy Feeney dies

Katy Feeney, a former major-league executive with roots in San Francisco and the daughter of the late Giants general manager and National League president Chub Feeney, died Saturday, the Giants announced.

Feeney died of “natural causes,” according to the club, which gave no further details.
She was baseball’s senior vice president of club relations and scheduling until her retirement after the 2016 season. She was familiar to fans who watched news conferences in the postseason, which ...

Indians announce four-year contract extension for Roberto Perez

On the eve of their 2017 season, the Indians announced that they have signed catcher Roberto Perez to a four-year contract extension.

The deal runs through the 2020 season and includes club options for the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Per MLB.com, the extension is worth $9 million guaranteed with options valued at $5.5 million and $7 million, respectively.

Perez, 28, figures to start the year as the No. 2 catcher behind Yan Gomes, though he’ll likely receive more starts than the typical backup. ...

Ex-Braves catcher Bethancourt makes Padres roster as a pitcher (THIS IS NOT AN OMNICHATTER THREAD)

Bethancourt, traded by the Braves to the Padres in December of 2015, has made San Diego’s roster and he will be used as both a pitcher and a backup position player.

New Yorker: The Dream Catchers of Pro Baseball

In her photo essay “Fantasy Life,” Tabitha Soren has captured this sense of tentative possibility. For years, she followed the careers of the Oakland Athletics’ 2002 draft class: twenty-one players, all drafted at the same time. A handful made it to the top, like the former New York Yankee Nick Swisher, who enjoyed a twelve-year major-league career, including a World Series title, in 2009; most did not. But in Soren’s pictures all of the men are in the throes of their own baseball ...

Melvin Upton Jr. Won’t Make Blue Jays

Outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. won’t make the Blue Jays’ Opening Day roster, reports Buster Olney of ESPN.com (Twitter link). The Jays are listening to offers for Upton, tweets FanRag’s Jon Heyman, who lists the Tigers, Orioles, Rays and Giants as sensible fits.

Toronto hasn’t finalized its roster yet, though the last spot was reportedly down to Upton and out-of-options infielder Ryan Goins as of Tuesday. Notably, the Blue Jays signed utilityman Chris Coghlan to a minor league deal ...

SB Nation: WHY BASEBALL GAMES ARE SO DAMNED LONG

Grant Brisbee watches an 1984 and 2014 game with the same score, the same # of pitches, the same # of pitching changes, and the same # of batters faced and figures out why the games are so damned long.

“Commercials aren’t the primary villain. They don’t help the pace of the modern game, but I figured that was going to be the half-hour difference right there, and the conclusion would be simple. But the 1984 game had 33 minutes and 13 seconds of commercials, and the 2014 game had 42 minutes ...

Brewers reliever ponders job in which he’s ‘treated like a human’ after not making roster

Brewers 27-year-old reliever Tyler Cravy thought he had a realistic shot at cracking the team’s 25-man roster coming out of spring training, but those hopes were dashed on Saturday when he was cut. To hear Cravy tell it, the Brewers’ front office informed him and fellow reliever Tyler Scahill that they’d be competing for a bullpen spot in Milwaukee. As it turns out, Cravy and Scahill each had a strong spring training—2.03 ERA and 0.73 ERA, respectively—but along the way the team’s plans ...

Report: Rangers demoted Keone Kela because of a clubhouse incident

On Friday, Rangers’ right-hander Keone Kela was assigned to Triple-A Round Rock to start the season. According to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the demotion wasn’t because of roster overcrowding or poor performance during camp. Instead, it appeared to stem from an undisclosed incident during one of the Rangers’ “B” games on Wednesday.

Rosenthal’s sources said that Kela exhibited less-than-acceptable behavior during the game, which provoked “a series of heated discussions” among ...

The Best Player in Baseball Doesn’t Want to Be a Superstar

The first remarkable thing about Trout is how big he is. At listed dimensions of 6-foot-2 and 235 pounds, Trout isn’t as bulky as The Mighty Giancarlo Stanton. He’s not incredibly tall for a ballplayer, either, and he doesn’t have quivering Disney bad-guy muscles popping out from under his uniform. Trout just looks big, the way a truck or an office building is big. Despite that, he’s unbelievably light on his feet — fast, but not bouncy, leaning forward as he chops down the ...

Michael Brantley likely to make Indians’ roster for opener

The Cleveland Indians left fielder likely will make the team’s Opening Day roster—and could start the opener—following a spring in which he slowly worked himself back into shape after playing in only 11 games last season because of a shoulder injury.

Brantley will travel with Cleveland to Texas this weekend as the American League champions prepare to start the season Monday against the Rangers. Manager Terry Francona doesn’t have to submit his roster until Sunday, but all signs are pointing to ...

Ranking the 15 Opening Day matchups around baseball

15. Ricky Nolasco vs. Kendall Graveman (Angels at A’s)
This will mark Nolasco’s 28th year in Major League Baseball, yet this is his first Opening Day start. And, no, I’m not looking that up. Feels true, though.

Nolasco was excellent for the Angels for 11 starts after they acquired him, though his overall season was kind of a drag (4.42 ERA, 93 ERA+). He has the third-highest ERA of any starter with 50 starts or more since 2014, and the two pitchers with worse ERAs are a non-roster ...

Rays Designate Nick Franklin For Assignment

The Rays have designated infielder Nick Franklin for assignment, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times tweets. Jumbo Diaz, Daniel Robertson, Mallex Smith and Peter Bourjos have all made the Rays’ Opening Day roster.

The 26-year-old Franklin batted a solid .270/.328/.443 in 191 plate appearances with the Rays in 2016, but he posted subpar defensive numbers and was out of options. He also rarely plays shortstop and therefore doesn’t make an ideal utility infielder, and Rays manager Kevin Cash ...

Goold: Will extra motivation make Cardinals ‘more dangerous’? | St. Louis Cardinals | stltoday.com

“The Cardinals are the standard for that sustained success in the game, and there is no reason that is going to change,” Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said. “We won 2016 and it took until the 10th inning of Game 7 after a rain delay to do it. You can’t build for that. You can’t build to have one or two shots at it. You have to build to sustain, year in and year out. … When 86 wins is a disappointing season, you’re in an awesome place as a franchise.”

Echoed DeWitt: “If you ...

What’s keeping Bill James out of the Baseball Hall of Fame? | MLB | Sporting News

So long as players who retired before 1990 or so and older writers, historians and executives continue to comprise Hall of Fame committees, James will need considerable luck to even get nominated for consideration. Perhaps in 20-30 years, when the generation of players currently benefiting from the influx of advanced stats into baseball are on Hall of Fame committees, James might have a better chance.

Even then, though, don’t be too optimistic for James.

Q&A: Forst talks formula for success for A’s

MLB.com: Jed Hoyer talked about trading Corey Kluber to Cleveland when he was in San Diego and how that almost came back to bite him years later in the World Series. Is it tough to see a guy like Josh Donaldson thrive in Toronto the way he has after trading him?

Forst: We knew Josh was a good player when we traded him. We didn’t have any illusions that he was going to go out and put up a clunker of a year after that; I didn’t know he was going to win the MVP. That’s part of our situation here. ...

Chicago Cubs favored to repeat in 2017, Las Vegas oddsmakers say

Back in March 2013 I went to Las Vegas for my first and only trip to that fair city. I’m not much of a gambler so when my wife suggested that I make a $100 bet with 30/1 odds for the Red Sox I laughed. To this day she reminds me of my lack of foresight.

Anyway, about a third of my sim league live outside Massachusetts. Most of the remote owners fly in for the weekend draft in January. Last year a few of the remote owners wondered why they were traveling to Boston in January when we all could ...
