This stinks…and I don’t even have him on any of my fantasy teams.
But make no mistake: The Rockies, hoping to turn this recent summer surge into a fall to remember, felt subdued at the outset of a critical homestand. The news that star rookie shortstop Trevor Story probably is done for the season after suffering a tear to the ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb dealt a blow.
“It’s terrible to hear that,” Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado said. “It hurts my heart for him. ...

At this point, why not keep him? He doesn’t have to play every day.
Roster expansion is 28 days away. If the team can build any value by playing him, even if they only save a million or two, it’s still better than buying him out now.
All of this has raised speculation that the Yankees could release Rodriguez, who remains under contract in 2017 for another $20 million. At this point, the speculation hasn’t evolved into anything resembling a plan: In an interview with ESPN Radio on Tuesday, ...

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, August 3, 1916:
The sudden disappearance of Harold Isroff, aged 12, son of Mrs. Anna Isroff, was solved when the lad was found in the American League baseball park, Cleveland, after relatives [in Youngstown] had become frantic. He is a good ball player and said he wanted to see Tris Speaker play, as he was tired of playing “one ol’ cat.”
Okay, maybe he shouldn’t have done things that way, but it’s tough to get upset at a kid for wanting to watch Tris Speaker. ...Read More...
How can the writer make this claim? He can have his own opinion of what he things about Puig but he has no idea of the opinion of GMs. FYI, a player’s reputation has an impact on his value. This is particularly true when the player is not playing well.
But I am not willing to stipulate that Puig has lost all his trade value. This business of comparing a player with his former self only goes so far, and it’s intellectually lazy. Puig, right now, today, is a considerably better player than Scott ...

Disagree with Rovell. The fan deserved Joey’s scorn.
Hernandez’s zinger could have been worse. He could have compared Zaidi to LA Times sports columnists. Those guys, phew, they aren’t that bright.
While Zaidi was speaking, Fox Sports posted a story online about how Puig departed Dodger Stadium in a huff after being told he would be traded or demoted.
“I’m not going to comment on that,” Zaidi said. “We have an off day today. Anything further, we’ll address and comment on tomorrow.”
Zaidi has a doctorate in behavioral economics from ...
UPDATE: Ken Rosenthal updated his piece and apologized for getting the report wrong later last night.
Puig’s agent, Adam Katz, and Dodgers officials said that my initial report — that Puig stormed off after arriving at Dodger Stadium and being given the news — was inaccurate.
“I’m told he never went to the park,” Katz said. “The club informed me and the player understood clearly that they were making every effort to trade him and that if they were unable to come to terms with ...

Toledo News-Bee, August 2, 1916:
The secret of the Browns’ winning streak in spite of the heat is out. It’s hot hotels. They deserted them and went to the ball park where they slept nights under tents while their opponents spent hot sleepless nights in downtown hotels.
Air conditioning is so ubiquitous in 2016 that I guess I never realized this would have been an issue back then.

They were busy.
Toronto general manager Ross Atkins acquired starting pitcher Francisco Liriano and a prospect from the Pittsburgh Pirates according to news reports. The Blue Jays are sending Drew Hutchison to the Pirates, reports say.
Also joining the Blue Jays is Scott Feldman, acquired from the Houston Astros for Guadalupe Chavez, an 18-year-old pitcher from Mexico.
Reliever Jesse Chavez, who had an up-and-down season after being acquired from Oakland in the offseason, was also traded to ...
An exchange of disappointments.
Keeping hope alive!
Billy Eppler looked at the emptiness of the Angels farm system and knew he couldn’t take the safe route.
When he made the surprising swap of Hector Santiago to the Minnesota Twins on Monday, it was with the idea that if he wanted Alex Meyer – once one of the top pitching prospects in the sport—he had to take Ricky Nolasco.
“These are opportunities we have to seize,” Eppler said Monday. “Everyone documented the situation with our farm system. So let’s grab a guy ...
Red Sox get back their closer at the trade deadline.
The Giants agreed to a trade that landed them left-hander Matt Moore just before Monday’s 4 p.m. ET non-waiver Trade Deadline. San Francisco parted with infielder Matt Duffy, as well as prospects Lucius Fox and Michael Santos.

The Giants filled one of their biggest needs Monday, acquiring left-handed setup man Will Smith from the Brewers, but the cost was enormous.
A source confirmed the Giants will send Milwaukee 2015 first-round draft pick, right-hander Phil Bickford, and catcher Andrew Susac.
Bickford, 21, has struck out 105 batters in 93 innings at two Class A levels this season and was considered a future cornerstone for the rotation. That the Giants would deal him for a reliever suggests how much the Giants ...

The Boston Red Sox have acquired left-handed pitcher Fernando Abad from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for Pat Light, a right-handed reliever and the 14th-ranked prospect in the Red Sox system.
The A’s sent outfielder Josh Reddick and left-handed pitcher Rich Hill to the Dodgers in a deal first reported by Fox Sports
Multiple reports have the A’s getting pitching prospects Grant Holmes, Frankie Montas and Jharel Cotton in return.
I am all for this compromise.
Anyway, as the self-appointed chairman of the Stick To Sports Committee on Oversight and Reform, I would like to officially announce a proposal that will build a towering wall between sports and politics. It’s a treaty of sorts, an olive branch that will benefit the public more than anything since the invention of the National Political Do Not Contact Registry. It’s the Stick To Sports Compromise.
The promise: We, the sportswriters, will stick to sports — as ...
