OTP: Randy Levine on GOP’s Foul Ball: Rules Deny Voters’ Will, Trump Wins

Working party officials, much like coaches work referees is acceptable. Sen. Cruz is doing exactly this.

But once a state votes and the results are in, the candidate who wins the most votes should be awarded the most delegates. Even more important, voters should be allowed to participate in every manner throughout the process.

A situation like Colorado, where party officials changed the rules to exclude voting is akin to a rainout that was never rescheduled or played. A game in which the ...

Braves stock to begin trading Monday

Talk about junk bonds…

Shares of stock in the Braves are expected to begin trading Monday, according to team owner Liberty Media.

Liberty said it completed a long-in-the-works transaction late Friday to exchange its existing stock for three new tracking stocks – one tied to the Braves (Liberty Braves stock), one tied to the company’s 61-percent stake in satellite radio provider SiriusXM (Liberty SiriusXM stock) and one tied to the company’s other holdings (new Liberty Media stock). ...

The Rise and Fall of Rafael Palmeiro

At the far end of the Mexican restaurant just off the highway in a Dallas suburb, he slides into a booth.

“I could still do it,” Rafael Palmeiro says. “If I had to play a full season, I could probably hit .270, with 25 home runs. It’s between the ears, man.”

The restaurant is half-full for lunch, and the pop music on the speakers drowns out any noise. A lanky, 30-something waiter comes by every five minutes, pauses and asks if he wants water, or if he’s OK. Each time the waiter ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-19-2016

Toledo News-Bee, April 19, 1916:

HORRORS! PEANUT SUPPLY RUNS OUT

Along about 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Swayne field (in Toledo) some of the fans who had been in line since about noon in order to get seats, began to grow hungry. Then came the demand on the peanut men. It was so great the supply ran out and crackerjack had to be substituted. Before the end of the game the crackerjack supply was pretty low.

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, April 18, 1916:

For the first time in 20 years and the second time in baseball history in the major leagues brother was scheduled to pitch against brother at League Park [in Cleveland yesterday].

Manager Lee Fohl of Cleveland announced that Stanley Coveleskie [sic], right hander, procured by Cleveland from Portland, would oppose his left-handed brother, Harry Coveleskie, picked by Manager Hugh Jennings to hurl for Detroit.

Harry Coveleskie refused to pitch against his ...

Yanks’ bullpen is redefining nasty — with monstrous help coming | New York Post

Now the Yankees just need to score more runs so their bullpen will have more leads to protect.

Betances has struck out eight straight batters and 14-of-15. Miller, who picked up his third save, has struck out seven in a row and 12 of the 17 guys he has faced this season. Neither has yielded an earned run.

“Those guys are ridiculous,” Brian McCann said. “They’re as uncomfortable an at-bat as you can have in baseball.”

Yet help is coming in the form of Aroldis Chapman after he serves ...

Felix Hernandez Is Not Right | FanGraphs Fantasy Baseball

If you are a Felix owner, he has done you all a great favor by not allowing a homer, posting just a .200 BABIP, and stranding over 80% of runners. All that good fortune has masked his poor pitching so far and given you a window with which to shop him. Surely someone in your league will stop at the 1.00 ERA, think all is fine, and be willing to give up a pretty good hitter, or even a comparable pitcher. How about Corey Kluber?

This may all just be an early season blip, and for all we know, ...

OTP 2016 April 18: How politics played a major role in the signing of baseball great Jackie Robinson

The Communist newspaper The Daily Worker, which was published in New York City, began campaigning for integration in baseball shortly after Jesse Owens won four gold medals at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. Sportswriters for The Daily Worker, including sports editor Lester Rodney, compared the racism in Nazi Germany to the racism in the United States.

During the next decade, the newspaper published hundreds of columns and articles calling for the desegregation of baseball. Its ...

Peter Gammons: Troy Tulowitzki, Travis Shaw, and attention to the defensive side - GammonsDaily.com

While the Blue Jays watch Tulowitzki’s work ethic so that he gets rid of throws strongly, quickly and accurately however he reaches them, so too, on the other side the Red Sox have come to marvel at the throwing of Travis Shaw.

Now, for a guy who was moved to first base for awhile, Shaw’s athleticism has surprised the coaches and the front office. “I know I am very impressive with his defense,” says Dave Dombrowski. “Travis gets rid of the ball very quickly,” says Brian ...

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle believes we’ll soon have a female MLB player

“This isn’t just an African-American celebration. This is about the opening of doors for everybody,” Hurdle said, according to the Beaver County Times. “I still believe firmly there is going to be a day where there is a female player in the big leagues. I got that. Where it goes, I don’t know. I don’t believe I’ll be in the dugout to see it.”

Hurdle, 58, may not be too far off. After all, it wasn’t too long ago when Mo’Ne Davis dominated the Little League World Series, though her dream lies ...

“I’ve got one more in me,” Costner said.

Costner said he wasn’t sure if he’d follow through on the project, but said “I’ve got to get it written.”

Vulture: Everybody Wants Some!! Is Effortless Fun.

The time is late August, 1980, when an agreeable 18-year-old named Jake (Blake Jenner) arrives at Texas Southern University, where he’ll be pitching on the baseball team. His “dorm” is a ramshackle house for fellow baseball players, and the atmosphere in those few days before classes and games begin is loose. The looseness is deceptive, though, because even as these athletes devote most of their waking hours to chasing women (with one practice session), they’re taking one another’s ...

Dustin Pedroia’s game has always been bigger than his stature | FOX Sports

Right-hander Mike Pelfrey started for Wichita State. The following year, he would be the Mets’ first-round pick, and ninth overall selection.

“That was one of the first places you could see the (velocity readings) on the scoreboard. Pelfrey was throwing 96-97,” Murphy said.

“Pedroia was a junior. Sure enough, Pelfrey warmed up before the game with some high numbers. One of the first pitches of the game, Pedroia hits a line drive off the center-field fence, just a bolt. He gets to second base, ...

Report: Adrian Beltre to stick with Rangers through 2018

The Texas Rangers and Adrian Beltre have agreed to a two-year contract extension worth $18 million per year, according to MLB.com.

Beltre, 37, was set to become a free agent at the end of this season, when the six-year contract he signed in January 2011 expires.

Beltre has long been a priority for Texas.

“We would like Adrian to finish his career as a Ranger,” general manager Jon Daniels said last year.

For Rule 5 Draft Picks, PEDs Pay Way Too Well

For the Phillies, Stumpf’s suspension will actually make it easier to keep him on the roster. Rule 5 players cannot be sent to the minors during their Rule 5 selection season. But they also must remain on the active roster for at least 90 days before they are free and clear of Rule 5 eligibility requirements. Because of Stumpf’s suspension, the Phillies don’t have to worry about carrying him on the active roster for the rest of the first half of the season. Now 32 of those 90 days on the ...
