Astros won’t rush Yulieski Gurriel to Majors | astros.com

“We don’t bring guys up unless our coaches and scouts and evaluators tell us their approach is good enough to work at this level, and I think obviously some adjustments have to be made,” Luhnow said. “There’s been a little bit of bad luck, a little bit of anxiousness. Those players are going to be very good Major Leaguers and it’s going to start happening soon. I have no doubt about it. Hopefully it’s this weekend.”

Pirates GM Huntington details thinking behind trade deadline deals | TribLIVE

The Pirates were delayed in announcing the Liriano trade as they struggled to reach a player involved in the trade.

“Because of the delay with the Liriano announcement, we weren’t able to articulate ‘the why’ early in the process,” Huntington said. “Many people jumped to incorrect conclusions. Our primary motivation was to acquire Drew Hutchison. ... Instead, it came out that we moved two prospects to move Liriano’s contract. Now I can’t tell you that wasn’t a part of the motivation, ...

Jordan Zimmermann placed on DL with lat injury | tigers.com

More bad news for the Tigers.

The Tigers’ hopes to avoid returning Jordan Zimmermann to the disabled list proved short-lived. Detroit placed the veteran right-hander back on the 15-day DL after Saturday night’s 6-5 win over the Mets and will recall left-hander Daniel Norris from Triple-A Toledo on Monday to take his place in the rotation.

Zimmermann returned from the DL on Thursday after missing a month with a right neck strain. However, he lasted just 1 2/3 innings, hampered by tightness in ...

MLB: Lincecum designated for assignment by Angels - Mercury News

Angels: Tim Lincecum was designated for assignment on Saturday, bringing into question the professional future for the former Giants two-time Cy Young Award winner. The Angels made the move a day after Lincecum allowed six runs in the first inning of a 6-4 loss to Seattle. Lincecum is 2-6 with a 9.16 ERA in nine starts in his return from left hip surgery last September. Lincecum signed a $2.5 million, one-year contract with the Angels in May. Manager Mike Scioscia said the Angels are hopeful ...

Nick Castellanos breaks bone in left hand | tigers.com

This stinks for the Tigers.

Castellanos has enjoyed a breakout this year in his third season as a Tiger, batting .286 with 18 home runs and 58 RBIs while settling into the middle of the lineup. His midseason production especially helped the Tigers weather cold stretches in other parts of their batting order.

Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz made a fast impression on a young Josh Reddick

It was the first time that Reddick, who became a Dodger on Monday in a deadline-day trade with the Oakland A’s, had met Ortiz in person.

“Immediately I knew I loved the guy because he put all the hitters into a room and he talked for a solid hour about hitting and how to approach things,” Reddick recalled. “That right there was a great first impression when I got there. (In the majors) he was the same guy. He came up to me and talked to me about what the starter had that night. Told me ...

Yasiel Puig, expected to make triple-A debut Sunday, still hasn’t reported to Oklahoma City - LA Times

The Dodgers want Puig to get into a work routine before games, a team official said. That could be complicated by the working conditions here. Oklahoma City is in a stretch of playing 53 games in 54 days, and the summer heat often compels the team to cancel batting practice on the field.

Reusse: Mishandling of Sano more of his making than the Twins’ - StarTribune.com

Miguel’s main problem is not that he’s been mishandled by the Twins. Miguel’s main problem continues to be mishandling himself, by not preparing for today’s game – today’s one of 162—at anything close to the maximum of his abilities.

And those abilities remain immense, if he ever chooses to exploit them to the fullest.

I’m starting to feel more normal these last three or four days. I feel like I’ve made the adjustments I’ve wanted to and I’ve kind of gotten back to where I feel comfortable.

MLB investigating Padres for medical disclosures at trade deadline

Major League Baseball is reviewing the Padres’ process of disclosing medical information to other teams before last week’s trade deadline, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.com. The league is looking into San Diego’s deal with Miami involving Colin Rea, as well as the trade that sent Drew Pomeranz to the Red Sox for Anderson Espinoza.

Rea was originally traded from the Padres to the Marlins as part of a 7-player deal on July 29, but lasted only 3.1 innings in his first start with Miami ...

A’s strength/conditioning coach reportedly spied on players in weight room

In a bizarre turn of events, an Oakland A’s employee is being investigated for spying on players with a hidden camera, reports Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports. The employee, strength and conditioning coach Michael Henriques, installed the camera in the weight room so that he could monitor players’ workouts and rehab while the team was on the road. Per Brown:

“This was the misguided action of one employee,” said Billy Beane, the A’s executive vice president of baseball operations. “We ...

Padres executive isn’t backing down from criticism of Matt Kemp

Padres executive chairman Ron Fowler isn’t backing down.

Fowler, speaking to fans at a “town hall” meeting Wednesday, referred to Matt Kemp’s open letter to Braves fans as a “bunch of B.S.”

The executive, in an email exchange, essentially repeated his comments to me on Friday.

Kemp, traded by the Padres to the Braves last Sunday, subsequently admitted in an article for The Players’ Tribune that he had developed a reputation as “selfish, lazy and a bad teammate.”

That ...

Phillies should sign him this month and let him retire as a Phillie.  And not only retire as a Phillie by signing him to the usual one-day contract and letting him wave good-bye to the fans at the start of a game.  No, for Rollins and the Phillies this year, with the season in the dumps, I see no reason why the team shouldn’t sign Rollins to a one-day contract AND let him play his last game in red pinstripes. Do this in late August, before the team brings up J.P. Crawford to play shortstop in ...

ESPN: Not A Folktale; Nationals Trea Turner Really Is That Fast

The Pro Rata Rookie of the Year:

In the opener of a three-game set against the Los Angeles Dodgers, he hit his first big-league triple, in the process recording a top running speed of 22.7 miles an hour that, according to MLB Statcast, was the fastest by any big-leaguer on a triple this season (and yes, that includes Billy Hamilton). The following night, Turner tripled again, this time on a line drive to left field—as in, the field that’s closest to third base. As if that weren’t impressive ...

Inside the Cleveland Indians’ trade deadline maneuverings | SI.com

For once, the Indians had not only the prospect heft to make a deadline splash but also the desire to deviate from their strict process. Their ideas weren’t limited to catchers and relievers, and as the deadline approached, they engaged in at least some level of negotiations with nearly every club that might have been thinking about selling. They got awfully close with some. But Shapiro used to remind his executives that no talk is cheaper than trade talk. “You’ve either made a trade, or ...

Reds Benefit from Error, Expected to Sign Undrafted Talent | FanGraphs Baseball

UPDATE: 8/4/2016: Friedl signed today for about $730k. Since the initial publication of this article, scouts have contacted me and alerted me that they knew he was draft eligible (though it’s clear some teams didn’t), as did Friedl, but that Friedl wasn’t going to sign after his R-Soph year unless he got the kind of money that he ended up getting today from the Reds. Scouts who saw him this spring didn’t think he was worth that sort of bonus. Scouts who saw him this summer however, did.

Twins consider sending Miguel Sano to Triple-A | twinsbaseball.com

“I think it goes along the lines with young players who get to the big leagues and they either subconsciously, or their agents, someone’s telling them they’ve got everything figured out and go enjoy the life,” Molitor said. “It’s contrary to what’s real in terms of you don’t want to ever get too comfortable. And there are other guys we’ve had discussions with as young players to keep their focus on how they got here, why they’re here and [doing] what they need to do to stay here.”

Milwaukee Journal, August 4, 1916:

After a couple of battles in which Capt. Johnny Evers and Red Smith, Boston Nationals, figured yesterday, Evers announced he was “disgusted” with the way things were going, and that if he could obtain an unconditional release he was “about ready to quit the Braves.”

The trouble started when [Evers] called Red down for unsportsmanlike conduct. Louden, Cincinnati, had tripled and was about to make a dask for the home plate after a fly, when Red held him. ...

The 10 quickest ways to get kicked out of an MLB stadium | FOX Sports

You have to respect the rules and be a seat moving artist!

8. Sneak up into better seats
This is a case-by-case basis. Usually, as long as you aren’t a jerk about it, and the theft isn’t too heinous, moving up into better seats isn’t an ejection-worthy crime at a ballgame. But if you’re trying to crash a skybox suite (the present author has NEVER attempted such a misdeed), you’re going to be out on your butt before you can explain why you’ve eaten half the complimentary shrimp.
