Ortiz: Plea to consider ‘character’ alters Hall of Fame vote | Jose de Jesus Ortiz | stltoday.com

Why are so many people actively working to make the Hall of Fame completely irrelevant?

Who, me?! Why your team’s next closer will probably be a total surprise—even to him

It’s hard, looking at that group now, to appreciate how weird a list of names it is. Of course, Hector Neris and Corey Knebel look like closers now, now that we’ve seen them do it and carried them for months on our fantasy rosters. But 12 months ago, Neris and Knebel had two career saves apiece. So let’s try this: I’m going to predict the 30 pitchers who will be closers in September 2018, and you’re going to look at me like I’m insane:

Cody Allen, Henderson Alvarez. Jacob Barnes, Cam ...

The fault in Dipoto’s (prospective) stars - Lookout Landing

Dipoto is chasing a closing window.

Which brings us back to today, and the recent trade of Juan Then (17-year-old 2016 international signee) and JP Sears (21-year-old drafted in 2017) for Nick Rumbelow (26 years old, 15 2⁄3 innings of major league experiences). In an article in the Seattle Times, prior to this trade, Dipoto said, in discussing his moves over the last season “‘We got younger and we didn’t get younger at the A level. We got younger at the big-league level.’” It’s true; Dipoto ...

Yahoo: I (Jeff Passan) am giving up my Hall of Fame vote because of Joe Morgan’s letter

Of the 1,069 propagandizing words sent Tuesday to Baseball Hall of Fame voters urging them to just say no to steroids, none encapsulated the museum’s winning combination of self-reverence and tone-deafness quite as blatantly as the six in which it called itself: “The most sacred place in Baseball.” If, by sacred place, the Hall means one in which racists, wife beaters, drunks, gamblers and purveyors of manifold moral turpitude otherwise are celebrated, well, Cooperstown is a shining ...

Hall makes room for an “idiot” on the ballot

If this were Dave Borges, I’d assume he’s talking about Schilling again.  But instead, it’s just a basic HOF summary article, with the strangest headline I’ve seen so far.  The identity of the “idiot” is not stated anywhere.  Any guesses?

That Ban Johnson’s suggestion for exemption of big league baseball players should be the beginning of his end was the official view expressed at the provost marshal general’s office today.

What’s next for Maitan and other former Braves | MLB.com

Maitan’s stock has clearly dropped. It will be interesting to see whether teams will wait for Otani to sign

By going back into the international amateur free agent pool, teams will have to use their bonus pools for such players to sign Maitan or any of the others. Since the signing period began back in July, millions of dollars have already been spent, so teams will be somewhat limited. The top five teams in terms of remaining pools, as of Tuesday, are:
Texas Rangers, $3.535 million

Shohei Ohtani MLB posting deal reached | MLB.com

As first reported by MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal and subsequently confirmed by MLB.com with multiple sources, the MLBPA wanted MLB and NPB officials to change certain aspects of the agreement, including a shorter window for players to be posted that would be less disruptive to the pace of the domestic free-agent market, as well as a rule that would prevent NPB teams from keeping a player if teams are unsatisfied with the size of the MLB contract (and, in turn, the amount of “commission” ...

A Discussion of WAR Wherein I Ardently Attempt to Avoid any WAR-Related Puns | Sports-Reference.com

It’s really tough to have a debate on Twitter. Comments, posts, and replies get so disjointed. I’m not sure Bill is actually as “steadfast” in the absolute certainty of his position. Now, he may have been at the beginning of this debate but, as the discussion has evolved, his comments, IMO, have softened as he’s heard/read other people’s comments. Again, my opinion.

In any event, Sean makes his case.

Now through years of arguing and debate, I have come to the conclusion that these two ...

I am a big fan of WAR and even have my own WAR system. Although I don’t agree that we *need* a better value system for use during MVP discussions, I also believe having alternative statistical views helps us find better answers to very complex questions.

Having said that, if Votto was placed on the Astros the outcome of his performance would actually help the Astros get more wins than his production buys with the Reds. That’s because the Astros overall offense would be more efficient in ...

Joe Morgan Wants To Keep Steroid Cheats Out Of Baseball Hall Of Fame | MLB | NESN.com

Joe Morgan is serious about baseball’s standards of excellence. The Cincinatti Reds legend and Baseball Hall of Famer wrote a letter to the Baseball Writers’ Association of America on Monday in which he implores Hall of Fame voters not to induct known steroid users into the sport’s most hallowed place. Esteemed baseball writer Joe Posnanski shared Morgan’s letter on his blog, and the Baseball Hall of Fame sent it to a wider audience.

Teams set 40-man rosters ahead of Rule 5 Draft

With only 40 spots on each organization’s roster, there are some very tough decisions for teams to make this time of year as to which prospects to protect.

The deadline to make those choices is Monday at 8 p.m. ET. Some moves have already been made, but that’s the timetable for all teams to figure out who lands a coveted 40-man spot and who is left unprotected. The latter group will be exposed to selection by the 29 other teams in the Rule 5 Draft on Dec. 14 at the Winter Meetings in Orlando.

Questions And Challenges Loom Over Derek Jeter

This is just stupid.

While it’s doubtful that another instance of Yankees vs. Red Sox will influence Jeter, it is a complication that is in place only because he’s Derek Jeter and trading Stanton to Boston will be perceived as a betrayal of the Yankees despite the reality he is no longer connected to the organization in any way other than as a franchise icon.

Jeter must take care not to let that affect him even in a subconscious way. The last thing he needs is the appearance of impropriety ...

Or the minor-league style just did not suit him. Kapler would bring his own organic eggs and organic peanut butter and organic whatever on the road with him. It was difficult to trust the options at rest stops and budget hotels across the South Atlantic League.

It’s not new. What’s new is the ability to quantify the impact of a player’s mechanical adjustments.

3. Amazing that launch angle is now a popular concept. Isn’t that what Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Frank Robinson, Harmon Killebrew, and countless others did? Some people make it sound like a new phenomenon.

More on WAR – Joe Blogs – Medium

Bill is off base here. Bill seems to want to use WAR to answer questions that WAR is not really suited to answer. He’s not alone, of course. Other people use WAR to answer the MVP question all the time. The reason it’s done is, there really isn’t a tool out there designed to specifically answer the MVP question. Bill tried to do it with Win Shares. Unfortunately the adjustment methods he chose were too broad in nature.

In any event we don’t have to throw out WAR. It’s really useful for ...

People might not remember but I created one of the first WAR, along with G. Jay Walker. Although I leave the evaluation of real MLB players to others now, I still use an offshoot of the system to evaluate players for my simulation league. For my system I essentially agree with Mitchel Lichtman’s thoughts at the bottom of the article. (Excluding tone, of course.)

I don’t think you’re really understanding how this works. I’m not sure Sean [Forman] does either. There’s no such thing as ...
