Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-21-2015

Seattle Star, August 21, 1915:

Visions of another pennant floating over the South Side ball yard came to White Sox rooters today when President Comiskey confirmed dispatches from Cleveland that his club had purchased Joe Jackson, slugging outfielder, from Cleveland.

Indians owner Charles Somers, one day earlier, quoted in the Washington Times after signing Jackson to a contract extension:

“I guess this will stop all this foolish talk of my selling Joe,” said Somers today. “I never had the ...

Rating every trade Dave Dombrowski made for the Tigers

No, the Tigers didn’t win a title with Dealin’ Dave at the helm, but his moves were often genius to the point that they bordered on criminal. He grabbed players from other teams and rarely gave away anything of significant value. While the Tigers kept winning, the players the team traded away (often young “prospects”) were rarely if ever missed.

Marlins open to Ichiro returning to pursue milestones in 2016

The next target is 3,000 hits in MLB, which is within reach next season. Marlins manager Dan Jennings said Saturday there have been internal discussions about offering Ichiro the chance to continue chasing milestones at 42 in Miami.

“Just watching him play and his contribution night after night. Certainly achieving some of the milestones, and the way he’s respected in that clubhouse by his teammates and what he does and what he brings on the field, there is still plenty left in the tank,” ...

The New Yorker: Are Minor Leaguers Paid Legal Wages?

Depending on how you do the math, pay for minor-league baseball players may work out to something below the federal minimum wage, according to court documents. Working fifty-hour weeks—and sometimes seventy-hour weeks—minor-league baseball players generally earn between three thousand and seventy-five hundred dollars, total, during a roughly five-month championship season, with no overtime pay, according to court documents. Contracts may also restrict their ability to play overseas or for ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-20-2015

Washington Times, August 20, 1915:

Whatever chances any club might have possibly had of buying Joe Jackson from the Indians were knocked into a cocked hat today, when it leaked out that Charlie Somers had signed his slugging outfielder for three more seasons. Jackson is now the property of the Indians until October, 1918, and his salary is the largest paid any member of the team.

The Dave Dombrowski hire: Whom it impacts - Boston Red Sox Blog - ESPN

Some more info about the change at the top in Boston. It includes some interesting quotes, including this one:

Dombrowski said he saw an MLB network segment this spring in which Ramirez was ranked the No. 1 left fielder in baseball entering the season.

“I remember at the time saying, ‘How can people make that statement when they don’t know if he can play left field or not?”’

So, he’s clearly not a fan of “The Shredder”.

MLB clarifies, Apple Watch is ok in the dugouts - SlashGear

Can he still be disciplined for bad judgement?

Following yesterday’s news about Major League Baseball banning the Apple Watch in the dugouts after a team manager was recently spotted wearing one during a game, the sports league has clarified that the smartwatch is allowed, as long as it’s not used for communication alongside a smartphone. The issue came up after Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost was questioned by the MLB after wearing an Apple Watch during games. A local newspaper reporter ...

Chase Utley: Greatest Phillie of title era | MLB.com

“He was flanked by league MVPs, left and right,” said Ed Wade, the general manager when Utley was drafted. “But I think if you boil down his decade worth of performance in a Phillies uniform, I don’t think it would be overstating to say he was the MVP of that era. As good as that core nucleus was, what all those guys did, there was sort of a performance and a heartbeat level that was happening at second base.”

That’s not hyperbole. As calculated by baseball-reference.com, Utley’s WAR is fourth ...

Royals catch Reds napping on infield fly rule | MLB.com

Bruce popped up a 3-2 pitch that had Hochevar and first baseman Eric Hosmer camped underneath before it hit the ground. The infield fly rule was invoked for the out on Bruce.

The runner on third base, Bourgeois, broke from third base and tried to score. Hochevar threw to catcher Drew Butera, who easily tagged Bourgeois five feet from the plate for the inning-ending double play.

According to Major League Baseball rules, runners may advance at their own risk when the infield fly rule is called. ...Read More...

Peter Gammons take.

His trusted associates with the Tigers, many of whom went back with him to Florida, all thought from the outset that Boston was where he wanted to go. “John Henry felt him out about the job when he was buying the team,” says one of those associates, “but Dave didn’t want to work with Larry (Lucchino). Greenia:  Comprehensive reform for the Veterans Committee

We start by adapting the three existing committees, making them for players only, while clarifying and equalizing the time periods covered by each one. In addition, the Hall should establish four committees for other candidates. That would give the HOF eight committees, the old BBWAA electorate along with seven specialized Veterans committees:

ESPN: Greg Bird Off To A Flying Start, Powers Yankees To Win

Greg Bird, the 22-year-old lefty-hitting first baseman just called up from Triple-A six days ago, smacked the first two home runs of his major league career. Better yet, he drove in all four runs in a 4-3 New York Yankees victory over the Minnesota Twins.

Will he be as good against Toronto & Baltimore? Or St. Louis in the World Series?

SoxProspects News: Scouting Scratch: Yoan Moncada

He’s still just 20.

Moncada has soft hands, plenty of range, and a plus arm that is more than enough for second base, but he seems to forget the fundamentals and lose focus there. His misplays during the series included: not staying down on the ball, trying to backhand a ball rather than surround it to get in front of it, attempting to make an off-balance throw rather than setting his feet, and issues on the transfer. On more difficult plays, Moncada showed plenty of effort and a willingness to ...

Dave Dombrowski in Boston: ‘Things sure changed in a hurry’

The Nationals? That’s very surprising.

Dombrowski, who interviewed three hours last Thursday at the MLB owners’ quarterly meetings with the Red Sox, told USA TODAY Sports that he also had a formal interview with another club, and spoke with a third club. One of the clubs, according to a person familiar with the talks, was the Washington Nationals.

The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the topic.
