The Young and the Restless: What’s Behind Baseball’s Onslaught of Blue-Chip Prospect Debuts? «

There are more prospects coming!

It’s already growing hard to remember that this season started amid outrage that the Cubs were holding back Bryant with an eye toward 2021. In retrospect, this was the wrong season to make a stink about teams putting their finances (or their futures) before their present playoff odds. Up to this point in the season, we’ve been treated to a rare display of blue-chip debuts. And while there’s certainly a cyclical element to the ebb and flow of prospect ...

Take a look at how the MLB Draft breaks down state-by-state | MLB.com

Jim Callis picks the best players by state. I’m not sure how he selected the state. Just looking over the list, I see Jerry Remy is listed in Rhode Island. He was born and raised in Massachusetts.

Edit: I just noticed the writer said, “Note: The states listed here refer to the school the player was drafted out of, not the state in which he was born.” That’s wonky. So, a person who lived his entire life in one state gets misclassified if he goes away to college. In Jerry Remy’s case, he signed ...

Chris Sale is dominating the AL, but one Unit of measurement matters most

Now that’s a funky stat.

Sale joined Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax as the only pitcher since 1900 to produce three consecutive starts of 12 or more strikeouts while yielding no more than one run. He also is the first pitcher in the modern era to record at least 10 strikeouts in four consecutive starts while increasing his total each time, striking out 14 in his last start Monday against the Houston Astros.

Urshela Gets 1st Hit, Home Run but Family Had to Leave Early - NYTimes.com

Giovanny Urshela got his first major league hit in the third inning.

He added his first big league home run in the sixth.

Unfortunately, his family did not get to see either milestone.

“They left in the second inning,” he said.

The 23-year-old Colombian third baseman made his major league debut Tuesday, and his family stayed in town for three days. But his family had to start heading home and couldn’t stay at Progressive Field for the entirety of the Cleveland Indians’ 6-0 win over the ...

The Cyborg with a Mean Curved Ball

You can’t program grit.

Will things be the same way when reactionaries around the game oppose wearable technologies and the introduction of robotics into the game?

If baseball allows robotics and other technologies into the game, the parallels to the current view of analytics won’t end with the debate. For example, the Dodgers might have the best tech department in the game and perhaps some of the less wealthy, more traditional teams will skimp on such extravagances. (Looking at you, ...

DSPN: Ruben Amaro Jr.: How Bad A GM Do You Think I Am?

Last night, CSN Philadelphia’s Jim Salisbury reported that the Mariners are “checking in” on speedy Phillies outfielder Ben Revere. This makes sense: Revere has been squeezed out of his natural left-field role, and despite a down year, is still miles better than what Seattle has been getting from its leftfielders this season.

This morning, the Tacoma News Tribune’s Bob Dutton reported that trade talks are going nowhere because the Phillies are asking for either Taijuan Walker or James ...

Yankees fans are clearly ready for the Bryce Harper Era in New York - The Washington Post

This is amusing.

“Are the Yankees in Bryce Harper’s future?” asked the New York Post. “Fut-ure Yank-ee” and “20-19″ chanted fans in the bleachers at Yankee Stadium during New York’s 6-1 win. (Harper is under the Nationals’ control through the 2018 season.)

Bernie: Matheny’s teams are tough like La Russa’s : Sports

That toughness is certainly being tested.

The subject of mental and physical toughness has popped up multiple times in Matheny’s online blog.

“Every once in a while,” Matheny wrote in 2013, “you find a group that almost seems to stand up taller and straighter when things get tougher. You see them stick out their chin and say ‘Okay, bring it on.’ I love the fight in these guys and the fact that they can’t wait to prove people wrong. To me, that is toughness.”

Mets eyeing Aramis Ramirez, Milwaukee Brewers third baseman, sources say - Newsday

According to Foxsports.com reports, the clubs have engaged in preliminary discussions, though the talks have gained little traction.

[Aramis] Ramirez, 36, is a three-time All-Star with plans to retire after the season. He is off to a slow start, hitting .213 with seven home runs and 18 RBIs in 48 games.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 6-10-2015

Pittsburgh Press, June 10, 1915:

In the event of the Federal league giving up the ghost or some sort of a compromise being made between organized baseball and the new circuit, there is danger of Baltimore being entirely eliminated from the game.

That city’s history in baseball is such that even the weakest minor league would hesitate about putting a club in there when the field is cleared. No club in the history of the town has ever been supported in Baltimore.

Votto joins Bench in record books with 3 homers | reds.com

Joey Votto on Tuesday night etched his name on a Reds list that only Johnny Bench is also on.

Votto knocked three home runs against the Phillies to lead Cincinnati to an 11-2 victory and secure the three-game series at Great American Ball Park. The three-homer game was Votto’s third of his career and catapulted him into the record books as one of only two Reds to ever have three career three-home run games—with the other being Bench.
“It’s very cliche to say it, but any time you’re alongside a ...

Updated Giants notes: DL is a strong possibility for Hunter Pence, Blanco scratched, setting the schedule for Cain and Peavy, SF’s draft list includes a familiar name - Giants Extra

Hunter Pence wasn’t sure if he’d need to go back on the disabled list. Giants manager Bruce Bochy is willing to wait a day.

This much is clear: Pence’s left wrist remained too sore to return to the Giants lineup Tuesday night as the club opens a three-game series against the New York Mets at Citi Field. Pence felt more discomfort in his wrist when he tried to swing off a tee and take soft-toss batting practice.

As Pence himself noted, Tuesday would be the seventh day he hasn’t played. ...

Mets turned biggest strength into a mess that’s not going away | New York Post

Is it the Mets or the sportswriters turning this into a mess?

The arrangement already has infuriated Gee, who has felt yo-yoed. The Mets have tried to trade him since the beginning of last offseason and may have been able to swap him to the Dodgers for Juan Uribe (before Uribe was moved to the Braves). But at the time the Mets did not think David Wright’s absence was going to be extended much further and were comfortable with the pre-DL Daniel Murphy playing third.

All Star Ballot Update: Royals taking over the world

We have yet another in a seemingly infinite loop of All-Star balloting updates, and it appears the Kansas City Royals fans aren’t losing steam. In fact, they are gaining it. Seven of the nine starting spots in balloting currently belong to Royals with Omar Infante real close to Jose Altuve at second base. Not only that, but Alex Rios is fourth in AL outfielders—though it does seem a total longshot to get him past Mike Trout.

Still, it’s something to behold. Check out these Royals.

I have no ...

ESPN: Starks: It’s time to trade draft picks in MLB

In those other sports, it’s part of life, part of the intrigue, part of the drama of draft day. Who’s trading up? Who’s trading down? Who’s scheming? Who’s listening?
In those other sports, the trading of draft picks is a given. Taken for granted. Buzzed about for weeks. An indispensable part of the fun.
And in baseball? Still stuck in a 50-year-old time warp. Still banning something that would increase interest in the draft by about a billion times. Trade your first-round pick? Still ...
