Full Count » Ben Cherington talks outfield trade market, Jon Lester and interest in Pablo Sandoval

Unless another team goes nuts with an offer for Lester, he will end up back in Boston. Of course, it’s entirely within the realm of possibility that someone will.

Fangraphs: Free Agent Predictions (Cameron)

let’s have a little fun, and see how good I am at prognosticating both where the primary free agents will sign, and how much they’ll get on the open market.

Boston Red Sox

They want a left-handed hitting third baseman and starting pitching; this market provides both. I think they’ll stretch on the years for Pablo Sandoval (6/$110M) because of his relative youth, but stick to shorter deals on the pitching side, going after both Brandon McCarthy (3/$42M) and Francisco Liriano (3/$39M). ...

Lucas: Yanks, Mets should look into adding statues honoring legendary players

A John Franco statue? Don’t the Mets already have a NYC Department of Sanitation dumpster outside Citi Field?

The Mets have a solitary statue of manager Casey Stengel at Citi Field, but it is in the Mets Hall of Fame and Museum. They have yet to install figures of icons like Gil Hodges, Gary Carter, Doc Gooden, John Franco or “The Franchise” Tom Seaver. If and when they do, I hope that they will be outside the gates.

It would be great if Mets fans, even those without tickets who are just ...

Trading Tulo isn’t worth it for the Colorado Rockies | SportsonEarth.com

Great player. Can’t stay healthy.

Tulowitzki, meanwhile, is one of the best players in baseball when he’s healthy. He proved that once again this year, posting an absurd .340/.432/.603 batting line with 21 homers and 52 RBIs in 91 games. Ah, but it’s that last part that matters most with Tulo. Is he healthy enough to depend on?

Since 2010, Tulowitzki has averaged 106 games per year. In other words, he’s missed roughly a third of the Rockies’ games over the past five years. But injuries might ...

Carmen Sucart says A-Rod “is the devil” and that he peed on their floor to send a message

An “evil” Alex Rodriguez urinated on the floor of his cousin’s home to send a message and mark his territory, Yuri Sucart’s wife told the Daily News Thursday in an explosive interview.

Carmen Sucart, whose husband, Yuri Sucart, is A-Rod’s estranged cousin and alleged steroid mule, blasted Rodriguez for accusing her deathly ill husband of trying to extort the troubled Yankee superstar.

These were the names:

Larry Doby. Don Newcombe.

Roy Campanella. Jackie Robinson.

Were those … autographs? Yes. Yes, they were.

Mind – blown.

What was this? Four men who helped eradicate baseball’s color barrier, all famous and accomplished, all with autographs on this one slip of paper.

Levine: Alexei Ramirez In High Demand « CBS Chicago

Alexei Ramirez is a good, all-around shortstop signed to a reasonable contract. If a team like the Mets wants him, they will have to pony up something good.

Ramirez’s contract is considered a strong selling point for the White Sox if they do entertain a deal. He’s making a modern-day bargain of $10 million in both 2015 and 2016. The Cuban native has missed just 22 games in the last five seasons out of 810 games possible (an average of 156 played per year). Ramirez made the All-Star team for ...

Dodgers to hire Gabe Kapler as farm director

According to Mark Saxon of ESPN Los Angeles, the Dodgers will hire former major league outfielder Gabe Kapler as their farm director.

Kapler will fill the vacancy created when De Jon Watson left the Dodgers to become the Diamondbacks senior vice president of baseball operations in late September. The hiring doesn’t come out of nowhere, as ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick first reported news of the possibility last week.

Kapler has strong ties to new Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew ...

WaPo | Max Scherzer and the risky history of $100-million contracts for pitchers

There are warning signs along the roads dating back 15 years, but this offseason will be like any other. People will drive on past and step on the gas. Max Scherzer will become the 15th pitcher to sign a $100 million contract – OK, yes, it’ll be more like $200 million – and Jon Lester will join him with a nine-figure deal, too. And the fan bases in two cities will be filled with hope, because the fans aren’t writing the checks with all those zeroes, and seven years of one of the best ...

Joe Maddon skipped town to sign with the Cubs on a five-year, $25 million contract, so the Rays need to find a new manager. Two Unrecognized Hall of Fame Shortstops

In the next part of this article, we’ll walk through the latest DRA estimate, showing Derek Jeter made approximately 450 fewer successful fielding plays that an average-fielding shortstop playing in his place would have fielded and converted into outs. Jeter played 2,674 defensive games at short. A player playing nearly every game per season, say, 150 games, plays 6 games a week, so Jeter played close to 450 “weeks” at short.

The easiest way, then, to put Derek Jeter’s defense into ...

JOE MADDON—AND MAYBE, FINALLY, THE CUBS—HAVE ARRIVED

This doesn’t sound that crazy. I’ve heard about other teams having something similar. I expect it’s a value system where a GM can quickly call up a number with the current estimated value for every player in baseball.

(Perhaps a little buried in all of the Maddon love over the past few days was that there appeared to be some sort of Dr. Frankenstein experiment going on in Tampa right before he departed.

“I think you need to balance it between the human being and the number,” Maddon said. ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-6-2014

New York Evening World, November 6, 1914:

Another problem confronts the owners of the Yankees. Arrangements have not yet been made with the Giants for the use of the Polo Grounds next year, and inasmuch as the club’s new grounds at Kingsbridge have not yet been completed, President Farrell is likely to be up against it for a ball park in 1915.

The Yankees’ new grounds weren’t completed until 1923. The new ballpark was in the Bronx, but it wasn’t in Kingsbridge.
