Marlins slugger Stanton out 4-6 weeks with broken bone in hand | FOX Sports

The Miami Marlins slugger has a broken left hand, which is expected to sideline him four to six weeks. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday and will meet with a hand specialist.

Stanton, who grimaced as he swung and missed for strike three Friday night in the ninth inning of the Marlins’ 7-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, said the injury became worse as the game progressed.

“We’re hoping that it will be the quickest course possible, but certainly not great news when you ...

Max effort: Scherzer dominates in 100th win | MLB.com

Six days after pitching a no-hitter against the Pirates, Scherzer retired the first 16 batters he faced. He had a chance to join Johnny Vander Meer as the only pitchers to throw consecutive no-hitters.

“It’s so hard. It takes luck. You have to be on point. You make mistakes, they have to mishit it,” Scherzer said. “I made a few mistakes early. They hit some balls hard. Fortunately, they were right at people.”

With one out in the sixth inning, however, Phillies shortstop Freddy Galvis then ...

Pitcher Chris Ellis having breakthrough season in Angels’ minor league system - The Orange County Register

A discussion of some of the Angels prospects, including something positive about Kaleb Cowart.

Servais also said the organization is pleased with the progress shown by former No.1 prospect Kaleb Cowart. Cowart, whose career stalled with two bad years at Double-A, started this season at Class-A, but the third baseman went up to Triple-A when Kyle Kubitza was promoted to the majors. Cowart hit .279 with a .941 OPS in his first 14 games at Triple-A.

Servais said the Angels stopped trying so many ...

Bradley to get second opinion on shoulder | dbacks.com

It’s never good when this happens.

D-backs right-hander Archie Bradley will have his shoulder examined by noted orthopedic surgeon James Andrews as the team tries to get to the bottom of the discomfort he experienced during a rehab start Wednesday night.

Bradley was on the DL with what the team said was shoulder tendinitis, and after his first rehab start Wednesday, he once again complained of soreness. Bradley allowed three runs on six hits while striking out three over four innings in that ...

Let’s put a halt on judgment of Boston Red Sox’s Rick Porcello - Boston Red Sox Blog - ESPN

This list is not complete without John Lackey.

Hold your fire, please, until you consider the cases of two other Sox pitching imports who were knocked around with impunity in their first seasons in Boston uniforms, only to reveal their true talents in subsequent seasons.

I give you, first, Josh Beckett, who in 2006, his first season after being acquired from the Marlins for a top prospect named Hanley Ramirez, had six starts in which he gave up seven or more earned runs, he was taken deep a ...

Abrupt exit, more questions

The situation in Philadelphia sounds ###### up.

The result was a remarkable press conference that featured a stunned general manager, a silent president, and a gigantic elephant invited by the outgoing manager and ignored by the other two men. The Phillies might be the worst team in the major leagues, but man, do they make it interesting. How strange are these times? When asked one of the most basic questions regarding situations like these - who will be in charge of hiring Sandberg’s ...

Q&A with Twins general manager Terry Ryan

FSN: As far as the decision to bring Buxton up from Double-A, plenty goes into that move. Was that a tough call to make?

TR: “Yeah, it is a tough call because you always want to make sure a guy can handle this situation and this level. I don’t think there’s any question just in the short amount of time he’s been up here that he’s shown he can field it, he can throw it and he can run. Now it’s just a matter of piecing the rest of his game together. The bat’s always going to usually be the ...

GM: Mets willing to ‘overpay’ for hitter, but nothing available - Mets Blog - ESPN

General manager Sandy Alderson insisted that he is willing to “overpay” to acquire a bat to aid the New York Mets, but there simply is nothing to bid on right now.

“I would characterize us as somewhat aggressive,” Alderson said Friday. “… Are we prepared to overpay? Me, personally, yeah, I’m prepared to overpay. But there has to be something to overpay for.

“You get to the point where you’re prepared, based on the short term, to maybe do a little more than you’d otherwise ...

Brett Anderson Pitches Dodgers Past Slumping Marlins 7-1 - The New York Times

Brett Anderson has made 15 starts without exploding!

Brett Anderson tied a career high with 10 strikeouts and allowed only one fly ball in seven innings Friday night to help the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 7-1 victory over the Miami Marlins, who lost their fifth straight game.

Giancarlo Stanton may be hurt, though.

Stanton winced as he swung and missed for strike three in the ninth. He said he hurt his hand earlier in the game, and the injury progressively became more painful.

Tyson Ross on His Walk Rate | FanGraphs Baseball

Interesting.

Yeah, Ross noticed that. “Hitters are just a little more patient with me. The slider maybe isn’t as enticing for guys to chase, or maybe they’re just more aware of it, and they’re just trying to lay off it, and I find myself behind in counts more.”

The difference here is bigger. Ross has lost around 35 swings on pitches outside of the zone this year. And, given his out-of-zone contact rate, that means he’s lost 24 strikes. Turn 24 strikes into balls, and you’ll see ...

Polite and persistent: How Bobby Evans became the Giants’ GM - Giants Extra

This is a GREAT feature on Bobby Evans and his path to the GM job.

“In his sleep, he can do what’s needed as far as contracts and roster management,” Sabean said. “The next step is to become more immersed on the player personnel side. That’s acquired knowledge, and he didn’t come up through the field side. His biggest hurdle will be relationships — with Boch, with the major league staff, with players, because you are involved on a day to day basis. He has to be first and foremost ...

Wilmer Flores may shift to second base: source | New York Post

Wilmer Flores is not a shortstop.

Wilmer Flores’ next destination could be second base.

According to a club source, the Mets have begun discussing the possibility of installing Ruben Tejada as the shortstop and moving Flores to second once Daniel Murphy returns from the disabled list. In that setup, Murphy would play third base.

“That would be the best defensive alignment,” the source said.

The Least Authoritative Hitters of All Time

How do we identify the lightest of the light hitters?

By using raw contact scores, that’s how. Strip away the Ks and BBs, and apply run values to all balls in play based on the norms for that era. Scale it to 100, and you have unadjusted contact scores for all regulars going back to 1901. Since we don’t have access to granular batted-ball data going that far backward, we’re not going to be able to adjust for context. That context includes the effects of ballparks, individual player’s ...

Mets eyeing move of Wilmer Flores from SS to second base

A source familiar with internal discussions confirmed to ESPN.com that there is a “good possibility” that Flores will be shifted to second base when Daniel Murphy returns from the disabled list as soon as this weekend.

Murphy would man third base, while Flores would play second base and Ruben Tejada—at least in the short term—would handle shortstop. Struggling rookie Dilson Herrera would be the odd man out as far as a starting infielder.

I’d assume Herrera would be demoted to AAA, since ...

Matt Goldman: Andy MacPhail set to join Phillies as top executive

It’s finally happening…

According to Jon Heyman, the Phillies are expected to name former Twins, Cubs, and Orioles executive Andy MacPhail as the new leader of the club. While current President Pat Gillick will remain with Philadelphia in a consultation role, MacPhail will take over the lion’s share of responsibility when it comes to the Phillies’ future. He’s set to be installed soon, as it will give him ample time to “evaluate the team’s general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. and manager Ryne ...

Pittsburgh Press, June 25, 1915:

WHY NOT STEAL FIRST BASE?

“If the strategic move will benefit his team, and the manager is willing to take the risk, why shouldn’t a player be allowed to steal first base when he so desires?” asks Bill Phelon, in the Cincinnati Times-Star. “Why can’t a man who has already reached second go back to first, if his presence on first is of more value than on second? [If a team has men on second and third with two out and a weak hitter at the plate] the club would ...
