What the Jon Lester signing means for him, the Cubs and the Red Sox | HardballTalk

Good stuff from Craig Calcaterra.

So that’s what it all means for Boston, Chicago and Lester. Now, here’s what it means for you and me and everyone who yaks about baseball: we need to relax. One signing does not a pennant win or lose. You’ll see, in the coming days, an awful lot of talk about how “the balance of power” has shifted in the NL Central and the AL East and stuff like that. Don’t believe most of it. It’s in the same vein as the talk that had the 2012 Phillies winning it ...

Major League Baseball Sees Record $9 Billion In Revenues For 2014

This never would have happened if baseball had a salary cap.

With 2014 soon coming to a close, Bud Selig and Major League Baseball can look back and say, “It was a very good year.” The league will see approx. $9 billion in gross revenues for the 2014 calendar year, a new record. Adjustments are still be calculated that could push the league slightly over the threshold with the value being described as “right there” in relation to $9 billion. That figure is up from $8 billion just last ...

Cards weighing internal options for righty hitter at first | cardinals.com

Do they need a full platoon or would a fill in for the most difficult match-ups get the job done?

While acknowledging that Tuesday’s Winter Meetings work gave him a better feel for which right-handed-hitting first baseman may be a fit for the Cardinals’ roster hole, general manager John Mozeliak also shed light on some internal candidates that could potentially address the need.

Red Sox discussing Wade Miley trade with Diamondbacks - Over the Monster

I would like this pickup.

The Red Sox need to find someone to top their rotation, and that’s been the major focus of the offseason to this point, but let’s not forget that the middle and back-end of the rotation are also in need of upgrades: the only pitchers on the roster at this moment who probably should be in 2015’s rotation are Joe Kelly and Clay Buchholz. The Sox have not forgotten this, as they are in active trade discussions for Diamondbacks’ pitcher Wade Miley, according to FOX Sports’ ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-10-2014

Milwaukee Journal, December 10, 1914:

When the last game of the [postseason exhibition] interleague series in St. Louis was completed Prexy Britton of the Cardinals handed [Ivey] Wingo a check for $900 or thereabouts—his share of the bonus promised the Cards for finishing in third place.

With the slip of paper in his pocket, Ivy (sic) walked from the Cards’ office, met the newspaper men, and announced that he was a Federal leaguer henceforth. Next day the backstop slipped around to the bank to ...

Red Sox Proved Incompetent In Losing Jon Lester - Eric Wilbur’s Sports Blog - Boston.com

“Incompetent” and “embarrassment”? This article is a bit harsh and over the top. The Red Sox wanted to retain him *at their price*. Last off-season they clearly didn’t assess him as a stud #1. He went out and had the best year of his career. He’s now getting paid as a true #1. He’s a great guy. He’s also a very good pitcher and pitched great in the playoffs for the Red Sox. He’s not a true #1, though.

Nightengale: Maddon says he ‘won the lottery’ with Lester

No, Jon Lester won the lottery. From all reports Lester is a nice guy. When the Red Sox lowballed him last off-season, Lester did not complain in the press. Instead he went out and had the best year of his career and was rewarded yesterday with a contract $40 million plus higher than he was reportedly looking for last year. Congrats to Lester and his family.

Sources: Cubs land Jon Lester with $155 million deal - Yahoo Sports

So it was all about the money.

“The thing I liked about ’em is it wasn’t forced and wasn’t a sales pitch,” Lester said after his meeting with the Cubs. “It was like, ‘This is what we can do.’ I don’t want BS. I don’t want show. I don’t want glitz and glamour. I don’t want to walk out to the field with your name and number on the JumboTron. I’m not 18 anymore. I want you to tell me what you can do for me and my family.”

Jon Lester Saga Tested Red Sox’s Commitment To Organizational Philosophy | Boston Red Sox | NESN.com

Two World Series rings?

The Red Sox’s decision to not go beyond six years and $135 million for Lester wasn’t as much stubborn, frugal and merciless as it was systematic. Boston has been reluctant to dish out long-term contracts to pitchers over 30, and while the Red Sox were willing to making an exception for Lester, there still was a barrier the club was unwilling to cross. Two World Series rings and past success weren’t enough to cloud Boston’s organizational vision.

Sternberg: If deal fails, Rays may leave area | Tampa Bay Times

Let them move.

Having spent years working toward the agreement for permission to look for new stadium sites, Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg remains confident that with a perfectly designed and located new ballpark, baseball can be a smashing success in the Tampa Bay area.

But if the agreement is not approved and a new stadium is not under construction within the next few years, Sternberg said there will be no baseball at all — “we’re doomed to leave” — as he likely will sell the ...

Does the money no longer mean anything? | FOX Sports

Rob’s right on the mark on long-term contracts. Most of them aren’t worth it. That’s why when I read about my favorite team signing a player to big dollars for big years I cringe. It’s short-term gratification and long-term pain that can greatly restrict a franchise for years.

Dodgers trade Drew Butera to Angels

It’s the first trade between the Dodgers and Angels since 1976, when they swapped outfielder Orlando Alvarez for catcher Ellie Rodriguez.

Butera hit .188 with a .288 slugging percentage in 61 games for the Dodgers. He is eligible for arbitration and out of options.

Goold: A modest proposal to improve Hall of Fame voting

I demand a hexidecimal ballot!

This rule has been in place since 1936. But never has the ballot been this backloaded with qualified but controversial candidates, and the clock is ticking on each player and his eligibility. If a voter believes there are 11 deserving candidates, then that voter must choose what 10 he or she will vote for. The voter can decide to, say, leave Randy Johnson off the ballot because he’s a shoo-in and doesn’t need the added vote. That would allow that voter to ...

Braves To Sign Alberto Callaspo

Second base??? *hearty laughter; wipes away tear from eye* No, seriously, where?

The Braves have agreed to a deal with free agent infielder Alberto Callaspo pending physical…

His .223/.290/.290 slash over 451 plate appearances [in 2014] was obviously well below-average. But Callaspo has produced at an average to slightly-above-average clip in recent seasons, and Atlanta may have cause to believe that he’ll return to that level.

Presumably, Callaspo would have the inside track to take ...

But he also said that if the agreement is not approved and there is no deal in place within the next few years for a new stadium to be built, he likely will sell the team and would expect it to be moved out of the Tampa Bay area when the Trop lease runs ...

Andrew Miller, David Robertson, and How Relief Pitching Is No Longer Overpaid

But here’s the thing with markets: they are cyclical.  Things that are overvalued get identified, and their value tends to drop.  Things that are undervalued get identified — like the market inefficiency of on-base percentage, explained in Moneyball — and their value rises.  Indeed, studies have shown that on-base percentage went from undervalued to properly valued, if not overvalued relative to other skills.

How Will Jon Lester Age? | FanGraphs Baseball

I love Lester. Teams have to pony up to get him. There has to be a limit to the number of years, though. I wouldn’t go longer than five years for him even if it meant patching the rotation for another year or two with mid-rotation guys.

In the current era, it has become increasingly rare for pitchers to qualify for ERA titles at advanced ages. Exactly five hurlers qualified for the ERA title at age 37 or higher this season; Bartolo Colon, Tim Hudson and A.J. Burnett in the NL, and Hiroki Kuroda ...
