10 reasons to love the Cactus League | MLB.com

Richard Justice is a people person.

7. Mike Scioscia, Angels manager.
He’s a teach. In the end, it’s that simple. When the Angels won the World Series in 2002, he opened Spring Training with a simple fine system. Players would get small fines for not taking an extra base and for not throwing to the right bag. In this way, he was letting the Angels know what he expected of them. That’s part of his brilliance. He begins Spring Training mornings with a team meeting that could pass for a stand-up ...

Blake Swihart Appears To Have A Case Of The Yips

The yips are the worst boogeyman in sports, and although it’s not clear that Red Sox catcher Blake Swihart is dealing with that particular beast, but this sure doesn’t look good:....

Masslive reports that this is not a one-time incident, and that Swihart has been struggling with his throws back to the mound throughout the early days of spring training. Despite this, Swihart told Masslive that he is not worried about it:

“I feel fine. I’m not worried. You guys shouldn’t be worried ...

Nick Swisher: “The Dream Is Over, Baby!”

And he was all like, “brah, its totes time to call it quits.”

Then, in my first at bat, I get to the plate toting one of my fresh new sticks, and … first pitch, bro … I go deep. Like, deeeeep. A no-doubter. And the catcher — who still doesn’t know who I am — says, “Wow, man … that’s a really nice swing.”

I’m like, “Thanks, dude. I’ve been working on it.”

And I just laughed all the way back to the dugout.

It was the best.

And the reason I say that anybody who’s ...

Dear Pittsburgh

In this case, I hope the best decision the Pirates made this off-season was the trade they didn’t make.  There are not enough heart emoji’s in the world to adequately express my affection for this player.

Brian Cashman excited about position battles | MLB.com

The Yanks’ chances would jump significantly if Severino can recapture the feel of his changeup and replicate what he did at the end of 2015, when he was 5-3 with a 2.89 ERA in 11 starts. Severino was 0-8 with an 8.50 ERA in 11 starts last year, and recently sought assistance from Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez.

“Which is the real [Severino]? We hope the one that possesses three above-average pitches, an explosive fastball, a devastating slider and a wicked changeup,” Cashman said. “That’s not ...

A Top Mets Prospect Let Baseball Wait Until School Was Done - The New York Times

The next really big thing.

In trade talks over the winter, Sandy Alderson, the Mets’ general manager, said Rosario’s name did not even come up much because rival teams had figured it out for themselves: Rosario was too good to be made part of any deal.

“He can be an outstanding player,” Alderson said in December.

Joe Maddon’s new normal for Cubs: A team people love to hate? | CSN Chicago

“I don’t know if the word’s ‘hated,’” Maddon said Thursday at the Sloan Park complex. But making a sense of swagger or arrogance part of this team’s identity? That’s Cub.

“It’s all about that,” Maddon said. “Just go back in history. I’ve often talked about the Dodgers when I came up in the minor leagues (with the Angels). Their uniforms were whiter than everybody else’s. They thought they were better than everybody else. And then they went out and they won all the ...

Rob Manfred discusses proposed rule changes | MLB.com

“We have data on how effective the batters handle that low strike and that is something that has driven our thinking,” Manfred said. “I think it’s also important to remember the evolution on the strike zone. The strike zone was down to the hollow of the knee because we weren’t getting low strikes called. My good friend Mr. [Sandy] Alderson [then executive vice president of operations for MLB] came along and he improved dramatically the management of the umpires in two ways. We had a lot of ...

Cardinals’ Alex Reyes has difficult road ahead | MLB.com

But there are two things to consider about the realities of Tommy John surgery.

One is that just about every terrific pitcher of the last decade did not go through Tommy John surgery. It’s striking: There are very, very few exceptions. The past 10 Cy Young Awards winners are Max Scherzer, Rick Porcello, Jake Arrieta, Dallas Keuchel, Clayton Kershaw, Corey Kluber, R.A. Dickey, David Price, Justin Verlander, Roy Halladay and Felix Hernandez. Not one of them had Tommy John surgery. Then you throw ...

DONNIE DEWEES ONE OF MANY PROSPECTS REAPING THE BENEFITS OF NEUROSCIENCE

Dewees credits this climb, at least in part, to his work with the software, which he refers to as “neuro”. It was created by NeuroScouting, LLC, which was cofounded by Brian Miller and Wesley Clapp and is based in Cambridge, Mass. “NeuroScouting was started in 2007 with a mission focused on translating the latest brain research into real-world applications,” Miller and Clapp said.

To players like Dewees, it is a seemingly simple program that helps with pitch recognition and reflexes.

Kris Bryant gets pranked by Cubs great Greg Maddux

Greg Maddux disguised himself as a bearded, scraggly TV sound man for a Red Bull commercial and zipped a few pitches by the unsuspecting National League MVP while hurling some zingers at him, too.

“This sound guy has got a good curveball. What is this?” Bryant said after taking one of Maddux’s pitches. “He’s pretty good.”...

Maddux came on the mound when the practice pitcher suddenly got a call to “run study hall” on campus. “I seriously doubted you,” Bryant said. “I need to get one over the ...

Jonah Keri’s over/under bet picks for 2017: Buy low on the A’s, sell high on the Royals

I am not a gambler usually but looking over all the over/unders, I’m tempted to put some of my cash down on the Diamondbacks at 78.5 wins. The D’Backs had a lot go wrong last year. With the change of emphasis on catcher pitch framing, the improved health of Pollock, and the talent I see on their pitching staff, I expect to see much better numbers on the defensive side of things.

Satche’s Greatest Trick

“Paige was the best pitcher I ever saw,” Feller said.

“He’s a better pitcher’n I ever hope to be,” Dean said.

“Of course the stories about Satchel are legendary, and some of them are even true,” said Buck O’Neil, who teamed with Paige on the Kansas City Monarchs and was a lifelong friend. “For Satchel, making believers out of doubters was sweeter than winning any ballgame. It was as sweet as life itself.”

The Best Transactions of the 2017 Offseason

#6: Brewers Bet on KBO Translation
Acquire: Eric Thames
Cost: 3 years, $15 million

Thames is a fascinating test case in many ways. A busted prospect who went to Korea and became a superstar, his return to MLB can either be seen as confidence in his improvements — he got a three-year contract! — or skepticism about how well he’ll perform — he only got $5 million per year, which is now bench-player money — depending on which part of his contract you focus. In the end, though, I think ...

Lou Whitaker on the Hall of Fame: “I didn’t even get daylight”

Whitaker, who played from 1977 to 1995 with the Detroit Tigers, ranks among the best second basemen in baseball history by various sabermetrics — sixth by Wins Above Replacement, seventh by Wins Above Average, and 12th by JAWS according to Baseball-Reference.com. But Whitaker drew just 2.9 percent of the vote for Cooperstown in 2001, his only year on the Baseball Writers’ Association of America’s ballot, disqualifying him from future consideration by the writers.
