White Sox problems always more interesting than other teams’ problems - Chicago Tribune

When will baseball ban scissors from locker room? Haven’t uniforms suffered enough? Of course, had the White Sox only used breathable cotton, this tragedy could have been averted.

Sale’s crazy plan to get out of wearing the throwbacks reminded some of the “Seinfeld” episode in which George Costanza tied the Yankees’ World Series trophy to the back of his car and dragged it around in an effort to be fired by owner George Steinbrenner.

“I fear no reprisals,” Costanza shouted into a megaphone.

Every Picture Tells a Story: The Stick « Our Game

The trade card shown at the left is part of a six-card series contrasting “New Style” (1880s) and “Old Style” (1870s). Depicting “The Scorer,” it casts light on an old mystery that I referenced many moons ago in my book Treasures of the Baseball Hall of Fame. I wrote:

We have heard the stories all our lives, and we share them warmly with our children. But we come to the Baseball Hall of Fame to see, to see the instruments of glory, the stuff of legend, the tangible remains of ...

Message from weekend sweep: O’s are resilient, but still need to add pitching - BaltimoreBaseball.com

Message from weekend sweep: O’s are resilient, but still need to add pitching

There are two important things that can be gleaned from this weekend’s sweep of the Cleveland Indians at Camden Yards.

One: Good teams are resilient. They battle when things don’t look particularly promising. And they do it in a convincing way. This is a good Orioles team.

Two: Don’t be fooled. The Orioles still need starting pitching reinforcements, no matter how well the rotation has pitched recently. ...

Baseball Hall of Fame: Ken Griffey Jr., Mike Piazza are Cooperstown odd couple

“They each took roads that not many have ever traveled,’’ said former Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Eric Karros, Piazza’s best friend in baseball. “Mike was the late-round draft pick with people doubting him along the way. Junior had the expectations of having a successful big-league dad. But they both did it on their own. There weren’t any shortcuts. I think that added a human quality to the display of emotion you saw here.’‘

OTP 2016 July 25: Card Shark - Bikini trading-card king Brian Wallos expands his empire to politics

Wallos’s Decision 2016 political trading-card set, released in mid-April, is perhaps the most ambitious and comprehensive effort to date for cable-news addicts who also grew up collecting baseball cards. Instead of documenting when a player was drafted in what round, Wallos reminds collectors of the exact moment each candidate dropped out of the race. And rather than commemorating highlights, like Derek Jeter’s 3,000th hit, Decision 2016 cards capture seminal moments, like Hillary Clinton ...

PITCH fx: The future for MLB Umpires? :: Klip Bloggin Sports

I didn’t realize the system didn’t track the pitch all the way.

How does PITCHf/x work to call strikes? PITCHf/x uses three cameras to triangulate a baseball’s position in space from the moment it leaves the pitcher’s hand. There is a major flaw however: The cameras stop tracking the ball a few feet from the plate, instead analyzing the trajectory to come up with a predicted location within an inch of where it actually shows up. ... Yet, that blind spot in front of the plate troubles the ...

Ken Griffey Jr., Mike Piazza deliver emotional Hall of Fame speeches

Well, Piazza lasted two minutes before his voice started cracking, sniffing, and wiping away tears.

Griffey, who made the mistake of looking into the faces of his three children sitting in the front row, lasted all of 20 seconds.

“Nothing can prepare you,” Piazza said, “for how you feel, and the history sitting behind us on stage.”

Rockies have several players who could be targeted for trade with deadline near – The Denver Post

The Tulowitzki trade last summer sneaked up on nearly everyone outside the GM’s office, including Tulowitzki, who was furious he was kept in the dark. But Bridich had that trade in the works for months. Trading Gonzalez could give a playoff-contending team a hearty slugger at an affordable price. His contract may be undervalued for his production.

“I’ve seen a lot of players that follow the money and they’re not happy,” Gonzalez told The Denver Post. “Money isn’t everything. You ...

Slate: Out at Home

Reds fans couldn’t help but think the Griffeys should’ve reunited in Cincinnati. Junior’s ancestral connection to the Big Red Machine explained a lot of the fervor over his eventual homecoming. Just as important was his star power, which transcended his sport in a way that doesn’t really happen in baseball today. (Try to imagine local news helicopters tracking the homecoming of, say, Dallas-born Clayton Kershaw.) Griffey had endorsement deals with Pepsi, Nabisco, and AOL; he had a ...

Changes are coming to baseball Hall of Fame’s veterans’ committees | FOX Sports

Good stuff.

Baseball’s Hall of Fame has again revamped its veterans’ committees, attempting to increase consideration for more contemporary players, managers, umpires and executives.

Under the change announced Saturday by the Hall’s board of directors, there will be separate committees for Today’s Game (1988-2016), Modern Baseball (1970-87), Golden Days (1950-69) and Early Baseball (1871-1949). Today’s Game and Modern Baseball will vote twice every five years, Golden Days once every five years ...

The team said the 22-year-old Glasnow was lifted because of right shoulder discomfort, but did not elaborate further, including Hurdle and Glasnow both declining to say what Glasnow’s status is other than “taking it day by day.”

Hurdle said Glasnow did not tell him his shoulder was bothering him; Glasnow said he did not attempt to talk Hurdle and Tomczyk into letting him stay in the game.

“Just visually, we looked at him moving his arm around—didn’t like how it looked and looked like it was ...

Chris Sales sent home because of argument over uniforms

CHICAGO—The White Sox scratched ace Chris Sale from Saturday night’s start against the Detroit Tigers due to a reported dispute over the team’s uniforms.

According to ESPN and multiple reports, Sale expressed displeasure over having to wear the White Sox’s 1976 navy, collared throwbacks, and the matter escalated from there, leading to a confrontation with a member of Chicago’s front office. The team then decided to send Sale home from U.S. Cellular Field.

Christian Yelich starting to hit for power | MLB.com

Yelich hits the ball hard. Everybody has just been waiting for him to start putting a little more loft into his swing. Maybe he’s starting to do that.

Yelich has long been considered a “pure hitter” who works the gaps, and he’s living up to that reputation. With two hits on Friday, his slash line is now .320/.396/.499.
The past couple of years, Yelich has ranked at the top of all players in ground-ball percentage. Last year, for instance, his ground-ball percentage was 62.5 percent, compared to ...

Moe Berg: Catcher, Lawyer, Horndog, Spy - Twinkie Town

Why did Berg, who could have done anything, choose to do nothing?

Nicholas Dawidoff wrote a fascinating biography of Berg, from which I stole all of this. And I don’t care: “The Catcher Was A Spy” is being made into a movie starring Paul Rudd, so Dawidoff has that Hollywood cash cash money money now, I can steal with a clear conscience. Dawidoff writes:

Berg ... ever on the move, always avoiding sustained relationships where people might get a get clear look at him. And he was equally ...

Arizona Diamondbacks reportedly weighing change at manager

Who else can be blamed?

Sources indicated on Friday that the club was considering making a change, not exactly a stunning revelation in a season that ranks among the most disappointing in franchise history. Triple-A Reno manager Phil Nevin, who was a finalist for the managerial job two years ago, is expected to be a candidate if Hale is fired.

Diamondbacks General Manager Dave Stewart would not answer specific questions.

“I don’t want to comment on rumors,” Stewart said.

#MLBRank: Barry Bonds, Ty Cobb make Stark’s all-time top 10

Jayson Stark’s all-time top ten.

1. Babe Ruth

My buddy Schoenfield ranked the Bambino fourth, based on the supposition that Ruth wouldn’t have been the same player in our time that he was in his time. Fun argument. But I’m not here to even attempt to rank Ruth in any alternative universe. So let’s just ask what he was in the universe he existed in. Answer: Oh, only the most important and transformative hitter/pitcher/larger-than-life character ever. That’s all. In that brief period when he was ...
