Brewers’ New G.M. Looks to Change Story Line - The New York Times

“Every organization and every situation needs to plot its own course,” he said. “No two situations are exactly the same, and the Astros’ was about as unique as you could possibly find. This is a different situation with different challenges.”
“Player development and scouting — and acquiring controllable major league players — is really the priority of the organization,” Stearns said. “So the energy and attention that perhaps in the past was given to a certain level of ...

Cardinals Insider: Heyward’s value adds up in many ways : Sports

Heyward will likely join a market that has outfielders with more power, Yoenis Cespedes and Justin Upton, and some standout aces, lefty David Price and possibly Greinke. No standout will be as young as him. Not one can invite bets on his upside like he can.

Among his peers in right field, Heyward ranks sixth in average, 16th in slugging percentage (.433), and 11th in OPS (.785). The corner outfield positions have traditionally been power sources. Five of the top 10 in homer totals this season ...

Nick Cafardo | Sunday Baseball Notes: Why are baseball owners endorsing new layers of upper management? - The Boston Globe

“The duties are just getting bigger,” said Dodgers president and CEO Stan Kasten. “The sheer numbers in personnel, the enormous number of players you have to keep track of, the huge amounts of data we’re getting on both scouting and analytics, all of those things make management of a baseball team more complicated than it used to be.

“I often give the example of the baseball GM vs. the basketball GM since I was involved with the Atlanta Hawks for many years. If you’re a basketball ...

Huston Street’s injury is a grim note in Angels’ dramatic win - LA Times

The Angels lose their closer and Mike Trout does Mike Trout things.

In the top of the ninth inning, they lost closer Huston Street to injury. In the bottom of the ninth, David Freese hit a walk-off home run, lifting the Angels to an emotional 3-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

The Angels remained one-half game behind the Houston Astros for the final spot in the American League wild-card race. The Angels have eight games left.

It appears unlikely that Street could pitch in any of those ...

Baseball’s early black players faced injustice, humiliation and now a curious grad student - LA Times

Documenting the real history.

The project called for patience, perspective and, perhaps most of all, a deep love of baseball. The last part was what made Neftalie Williams’ presence here, next to a baseball complex in Compton, so peculiar.

Williams was there to interview Don Buford, subject No. 5 out of 111 in a quixotic mission: Over the next few years, it’s Williams’ job to interview, record and catalog every living African American player from the turbulent first 25 years of Major League ...

The tenuous formula the Yankees will be relying on in October | New York Post

Late Saturday, Alex Rodriguez, who delivered the game-winning, ground-rule double in the sixth inning, said, “If you look at today’s game as the recipe, minus the home runs …”

Exactly. Once the Yankees took the lead in the sixth, manager Joe Girardi turned to Justin Wilson, Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller for a perfect inning apiece.

“This team has good DNA,” A-Rod said. “It doesn’t give up.”

Harper: Matt Harvey shows Mets he’s still their ace - NY Daily News

The Mets are on their way to the playoffs and Matt Harvey wants to be a big part of their plan.

“When he came to me last week he said, ‘I want to pitch. I want to stay out there. I want to throw 100 pitches and I want to do it twice (before the end of the season). “He said, ‘We’re going to win this thing and I’m going to pitch in the playoffs, and I’ve got to be ready. And I’m not ready.’ ”

Pitching coach Dan Warthen said Harvey delivered an even more forceful message to ...

Behind the Scenes of Major League Baseball’s Futuristic Player Tracking System | Motherboard

Statcast is the wrong name. It should be StatScout because all Statcast does is quantify what scouts have been trying to accurately judge since the first scout watched his first ballgame.

So, have the stats nerds won? Legendary Sports Illustrated reporter Tom Verducci says the system is “not trying to get rid of the mythology” of baseball, but really, that’s a fair concern here. We might not know if Bob Feller actually threw harder than Jacob DeGrom, but that’s kind of the point, isn’t it? Many ...

Hey, MLB: Royals’ postseason should be an all-inclusive party that extends to Arrowhead

I thought we were all meeting up at Paul Rudd’s mom’s house?

When the idea for a sort of simulcast at Arrowhead was presented to people at MLB, the issue of parking was the first brought up. But even if 30,000 people showed, that would still mean fewer people at Truman Sports Complex than for a sold-out football game.

Nobody from the league would speak on the record for this column, but other than basic logistical things that teams do routinely — security, parking, following sponsorship ...

Carlos Martinez hurts shoulder in first inning |

This doesn’t sound good.

The Cardinals can only hope that a special season for first-year starter Carlos Martinez did not come to an abrupt and unfortunate end on Friday night, when he walked ever so slowly to the dugout, his glove over his face, seemingly as an attempt to hide the raw emotion.

The severity of the right shoulder tightness that prompted Martinez’s exit seven pitches into what ended up as a 4-3 Brewers win will become clearer after an MRI exam and further evaluation on Saturday. ...

The Wild Card format doesn’t need to change.

Keep it the way it is.

(An aside: I’m not addressing the issue of the Wild Card Game as a one-game playoff here. That’s a topic for another day. Personally, I’d love to see a three-game series, all in the same ballpark, beginning with a doubleheader. It makes home-field advantage that much more important, and it taxes the bullpens of those teams, so the No. 1 seed has a distinct advantage. Plus, it’s just fairer baseball-wise, because the sport was never meant to be played in a one-game format. ...

Cubs clinch postseason berth

Clinching on a Kelby Tomlinson strikeout 2,000 miles away isn’t exactly as dramatic as coming back on Mark Melancon at home would’ve been, but after watching the Cubs wander the desert for the past seven years, I’ll certainly take it.  Here’s hoping even better things lie ahead.

BLS: Madison Bumgarner gets into an intense staredown with ump Joe West

Get a room, fellas…

San Francisco Giants ace Madison Bumgarner has a reputation for being one of the more fiery pitchers in baseball. And Joe West has a reputation for being — well, how should we put this nicely? — the most contentious ump in the game. And that’s not just our opinion. You need only to search West’s name on the Internet to see words like “awful” and “idiocy.”

So you can see how the combination of Bumgarner and West could be combustible. And, to little surprise, it was ...

An eventful night at the ballpark:

A woman who went to see the San Diego Padres left as a brand new madre. Petco Park announced that a baby boy was born during Thursday night’s game against the San Francisco Giants, the first in the ballpark’s 11-season history.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that the baby was born “around the third inning” and was named Levi. Donna Borowy, an on-staff nurse at Petco Park who is also a midwife, delivered the baby near the Padres store. Borowy told KGTV ...
