Padres have a gem in Middlebrooks | padres.com

Richard Justice is bullish on Will Middlebrooks. I haven’t really watched him this spring but I’ve always believed the guy has a lot of talent.

Is Obama proposal the end of taxpayer-subsidized sports stadiums?

I’ve railed against government-financing of stadiums for years and years. I learned a long time ago what terrible waste of tax-payer money it is. I would love to see the practice ended. I’ve also learned that, if there is a way for our elected officials to screw up a good idea, they will find it.

Say hey, baseball: These Tommy John surgeries aren’t going away - SBNation.com

Sadly, I agree.

MLB is buying used cars, and paying for them and driving them like they’re new. They don’t have much choice, either, as there just aren’t that many pristine models released each year—as Keri and Dr. Fleisig suggest, MLB teams need to find that natural talent from Vermont who doesn’t play year round and hasn’t developed the same kind of injuries if they want to beat the system. Guess how many of those there are each summer? MLB has tried to slow this trend, but that’s mostly a PR ...

This is Tommy Lasorda dancing to ‘Turn Down for What’

Tommy has always had a great sense of humor. I mean, not about gays, but about other stuff.

We’ve now gone to the next level as former Dodgers great Tommy Lasorda, age 87, danced and sang the hook to the song for his Instagram followers.

That’s peak Internet. Shut it down. Let’s all retire and go live in the woods. Our job here is done.

New baseball commissioner should reinstate Pete Rose - Sports - The Boston Globe

No, baseball doesn’t need it. He violated baseball biggest rule. He *agreed* to a lifetime ban. His time is not done. That doesn’t mean he can’t counsel others not to make the same mistake. It doesn’t mean that he can’t do good. It means he can’t do it as part of Major League Baseball.

If we are a forgiving nation, is 25 years not enough punishment? Rose finally seems sincere. With the All-Star game coming up in Cincinnati, what a major moment for Major League Baseball if Rose is back in its ...

Reds will use left-hander Tony Cingrani out of bullpen

“As of right now, we see Cingrani as more of a relief option rather than a starting option,” Price said. “We’re looking at our club and trying to figure out how we’re the best. Pete Rose petitions commissioner

What are the odds?

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred says he has received a formal request from Pete Rose asking that his lifetime ban be lifted and that he will consider the all-time hits leader’s request “on its merits.”

“I want to make sure I understand all of the details of the Dowd Report and Commissioner [Bart] Giamatti’s decision and the agreement that was ultimately reached,” Manfred said after a meeting with Los Angeles Dodgers players in Arizona on Monday morning. “I ...

Arizona Diamondbacks: Wait until next year? Or maybe year after? | FOX Sports

You don’t have to be a sabermetrician to know this is going to be a bad team in 2015.They have a catcher who isn’t much of a catcher. A third baseman who can’t really play third base. Their starting pitching looks to be bad, really, really bad. But don’t worry, they are smarter than everyone else.

For now, let’s just say that the D-backs will be, um, fascinating? I can’t go so far as to say they will be good, not when righties Josh Collmenter and Jeremy Hellickson are miscast as the team’s Nos. ...

Brewers among best in MLB at avoiding Tommy John surgery

Maybe because Tommy John never played for the Brewers?

In September of 2014, there had been 53 Tommy John surgeries since 2012. This includes great or potentially great pitchers like Jose Fernandez, Kris Medlen, Brandon Beachy, Matt Moore, Martin Perez and Tyler Skaggs. Sometimes players come back from Tommy John surgery and are as strong as ever. Some players never recover fully. Some have the surgery multiple times in their career. Some don’t even make it back.

Tommy John was always a ...

Mets get terrible Zack Wheeler news: Tommy John likely | New York Post

Another young pitcher looks to be going under the knife.

The Mets’ worst fears regarding Zack Wheeler came true.

The right-hander received a preliminary diagnosis of a torn UCL in his right elbow after the results of his MRI exam were reviewed Monday at Hospital for Special Surgery.

Wheeler is expected to undergo Tommy John surgery. He also could opt for rest and rehab — a la the Yankees’ Masahiro Tanaka — depending on the severity of the tear. Surgery would mean Wheeler would miss the ...

Hahn talks focal points on locking down core players | whitesox.com

According to general manager Rick Hahn, there are focal points to be met when the White Sox think about [signing players long term].
“It’s a combination of feeling, one, that the player is a key part to what we have going here and want to make sure we are able to have him longer than the normal six-year control period,” Hahn said. “And second, probably almost as important if not more important, is the belief that the guaranteed money wouldn’t change the player’s approach to their preparation ...

Twins tell Miguel Sano he’ll open the year in Double-A - TwinCities.com

“(Twins manager Paul Molitor) told me I’m going to start in Double-A,” Sano said. “I’m fine. I’m OK. I’ll go to the other side for work. I’ll have the same plan I had over here. I’m feeling normal and happy. I want to have a good season. I’m really excited to go to the other side. Everything is good.”

How long would Sano, who turns 22 on May 11, expect to be at Double-A, which is where he finished the year in 2013?

“Probably one month,” Sano said.

Pirates, South Korean star Kang optimistic bat will translate to MLB | TribLIVE

Partly because of his size, there are believers the power will migrate. Dan Farnsworth, a swing analyst for Fangraphs.com, predicted immediate stardom for Kang, just as he did for another unknown, Cuban hitter Jose Abreu.

The believers include the Pirates. Kang peppered the metal roof of batting cages beyond the left-field fence at a Pirate City back field early this spring. In his second spring at-bat, he homered to right-center against Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Marco Estrada.

While ...

Marlins eyeing Olivera, not shopping any starters « The Fish Pond

Did the Dodgers really offer $77 million?

The belief is Olivera is sifting through his options. Miami’s is willing to offer a seven-year package in the $50 million range. There has been speculation that the Dodgers had a $77 million offer on the table, but within Miami’s organization, the belief is that figure is not accurate.

Baseball having trouble keeping kids interested - Sports - The Boston Globe

You statheads broke baseball. THINK ABOUT THE CHILDREN the next time you talk about WAR.

The media landscape has also changed, with baseball stories now reading like technical documents. The human stories of players and their histories have gone the way of their WARs and WORPs, and I’m not sure kids see that as fun.

It Happens Every Spring: The Jeff Francoeur Comeback Story

This may be our last one, alas.

“In August 2005, after Francoeur batted .432 and hit eight home runs over his first 23 games as a rookie for the Atlanta Braves, Sports Illustrated splashed him on its cover, the headline “The Natural” bisecting his torso like an arrow. The subhead asked the question that established an unreachable standard for him, and that shadowed him thereafter: “Can anyone be this good?”

No, anyone cannot.”
