Scout who sued Yankees for age discrimination settles case - NY Daily News

“We reached a tentative agreement that has amicably resolved the matter,” Miske’s attorney, Vincent Miranda, told the Daily News. He declined to say when the case had settled, but it appeared to have been very recent — no papers had yet been filed in the case indicating a deal.

Miske, whose most recent stint with the team began in 2009, says he was told by his boss, then-assistant general manager Billy Eppler, that “50 years in scouting is enough.”

“The Yankees often treated Mr. ...

Carlos Beltran says Texas is ‘more about baseball’ than New York - CBSSports.com

Beltran has taken a liking to his new haunt in other ways, too—like preferring the vibes in Texas to those in New York. Here’s what he told KESN-FM about the difference between his most-recent employers, per the Dallas Morning News:

But at the end of the day, [in] New York there’s a lot of distractions, a lot of things going on more than baseball. Here it’s more about baseball.

That’s not a surprising answer. Beltran has every reason to prefer playing in Texas—in part because, you know, the ...

MLB clears Ryan Howard, Ryan Zimmerman in PED probe

Turns out the shipments were just going to Peyton Manning’s wife!

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard and Washington Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman were cleared of wrongdoing in Major League Baseball’s investigation into their possible use of performance-enhancing drugs, prompted by an Al Jazeera report.

MLB announced Friday that the investigation was complete and it “did not find any violations of the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program by either Howard or ...

“Spaceman” Bill Lee Talks Weed, Running for Governor, and Josh Duhamel - Men’s Journal

“You’re supposed to sit on your ass and nod at stupid things,” the late Warren Zevon sang on his tribute to the former big league pitcher Bill Lee. But the free-spirit player, known to most as “Spaceman,” wasn’t about to do that — and it eventually cost him his career after a one-game walkout.

After steady rebuild, Astros on verge of taking a step back

They are six games behind the Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox in the wild card race entering Wednesday night.

But, oh, how everything could have been different if Cole Hamels didn’t exercise his no-trade rights when the Philadelphia Phillies were traded to the Astros a year ago, and Milwaukee Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy wouldn’t have vetoed a deal two weeks ago to the Cleveland Indians.

“It changed,’’ Luhnow said, “everything.’’

A Q&A with the Los Angeles Times’ Andy McCullough on the insecurity of writing, what the Royals did for his career, and Twitter schtick

Interesting candid thoughts from the Dodgers (and former Royals, Mets, and Yankees) beat writer.

This past spring, I stopped by the Royals clubhouse. “We got you promoted!” Eric Hosmer said. In that moment, your insecurity creeps in, and you want to say “Fuck you, I did this on my own!” But that’s not totally true. So I wear it. I’m sure I’ll be connected with Kansas City for a while, and I’ll stomach the occasional dweeb on the Internet telling me I owe my career to the ...

Liftetime Bans for PEDs? Some Researchers Say Yes

As of 2015, the World Anti-Doping Agency began recommending that athletes caught intentionally using performance-enhancing drugs could be banned up to four years, doubling the previous ban. Despite that increased severity, some medical researchers say it’s still not sufficient.

“If you’re caught taking anabolic steroids, I think it should be a lifetime ban,” Stuart Phillips, a kinesiology professor at McMaster University in Canada, told the Globe and Mail.

The reasoning by Phillips, ...

Why Do The Red Sox Stick With John Farrell?

Bloodlust rages with each bullpen meltdown, a one-sided social media referendum calling for Farrell to lose his job. On the heels of a six-game winning streak, a single defeat – granted, a brutal one – is sufficient to unleash nitroglycerin. Yet despite the trending prominence of #firefarrell calls in the wake of defeats, the Red Sox haven’t dropped the guillotine and they almost surely aren’t going to do so this season.

How well does the manager work with the GM/president of ...

Names to inspire the beardless youth to falsetto cheering and the hodcarrier and banker to lusty applause…While the combination could go out any old day and win a ball game, it began to do it with too much regularity. Gary Sanchez turned around work ethic, defense to start for Yanks - NY Daily News

Plus, Sanchez had maturity and discipline issues in the minors. He was suspended at Double-A Trenton in 2014 and banished back to extended spring training from Class A ball in 2011. As Cashman puts it, “We try to jump on it to get all that stuff out of the way at the lower levels.”

He struggled some years in the minors, not living up to high expectations. And when the Yankees were practically handing him the backup catcher’s job in spring training this year, he pressed and did not play well, ...

Steven Matz of New York Mets to miss start with issue in shoulder

“I was throwing on flat ground and I felt a little twinge in my shoulder,” Matz said. “It was bothering me a little bit. And then, next day, I was throwing and I was still feeling it, so I didn’t throw my bullpen, hoping it would get better. I was just kind of taking it day by day. There’s some discomfort in there. I think you go through stuff all the time throughout a season, but it didn’t respond the way I’d like it to.”

Matz said he is not concerned about the issue lingering.

The So-Far Disastrous Crop of 2016 Free Agents

Jason Heyward, Justin Upton, and Alex Gordon were all supposed to be All-Star caliber outfielders; instead, they’ve all lost their power and are hitting like backup catchers. Between them, they’ve been worth less than +1 WAR this year, but they’ll be paid a combined $55 million this season anyway, and that’s even with the Royals backloading Gordon’s deal. Heyward and Upton are young enough that it’s still reasonable to think they can bounce back from this, but given the disastrous ...

Inside Baseball From Jon Heyman - 10 Manager Status Updates

Notes galore.

5. Mike Scioscia (50-70), Angels. Outside L.A. (or technically Anaheim), a lot of stat-inclined executives around the game don’t get why Scioscia is still there, don’t understand it one bit. And it has nothing to do with the record this year. It’s about the belief that Scioscia has not adapted, that he’s supremely old school in a new-school game. Scioscia could not get along with ex-Angels GM Jerry Dipoto, driving Dipoto out and to the in-division rival Mariners. But new GM ...

Heyman - Alex Rodriguez Long Shot For 2017

When Alex Rodriguez’s publicist announced that A-Rod would not be coming back to play in 2016, the speculation already started up about 2017.

But that is probably a long shot, too.

A-Rod told some friends the weekend of his sendoff, “I’m done.” And perhaps we should take him at his word (though he hasn’t tipped his hand publicly).

Rob Manfred talks rules, game’s young stars | MLB.com

Prior to the 2015 season, a rule requiring players to keep one foot in the batter’s box was implemented, and clocks timing breaks for innings and pitching changes were posted in each stadium. This year, the average time of game is up a little to three hours.

The 10 most deserving players who are not in the Baseball Hall of Fame

It’s easy to forget that the 1960s and early 1970s were an abysmal time to put up hitting numbers. There’s a reason the AL introduced the designated hitter in 1973 — scoring was at a near all-time low. if we take Allen’s career records and put them into the context of the 1980s and at Comiskey Park, for example, he ends up with more than 400 home runs, a .324 batting average, .414 OBP, and .592 SLG. His context-altered line would show ten 100-RBI seasons, three 200-hit seasons, and nine ...

Keith Law: Time to end the Diamondbacks’ reign of error (INSIDER)

No mistake has loomed larger than the constant stream of errors around Cuban right-handed pitcher Yoan Lopez. The brand-new front office reached to sign him for $8 million after the 2013 season, even though it appeared that he was priced by other teams at about one-tenth that number. The Diamondbacks didn’t understand the international bonus pool rules, and thus were unaware they would have to pay an $8 million penalty on top of Lopez’s bonus AND would be prohibited from signing any July 2 free ...

Billy Bob of the Baseball Movies

But Thornton was more than a fan. At Malvern (about 20 miles from Hot Springs) High School, he had some success as a pitcher. He was good enough to get invited to a Kansas City Royals tryout camp in 1973. And it was there that fate intervened.

On his first day at camp, he was hit by an errant throw during an infield drill. An anonymous but strong-armed third baseman broke his collarbone. Thornton was not participating in the drill but was just a bystander. And so his professional career ended ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-18-2016

Pittsburgh Press, August 18, 1916:

Manager Joe Tinker yesterday indicated very plainly his sentiments toward Heine Zimmerman. In spite of the fact that he did not have enough outfielders to go around, he sent Zimmerman to the bench, Zeider to third and employed Gene Packard, a pitcher, in left field for the game against the Giants. This is taken to mean that Tinker is about through with Zimmerman.

Good guess. The Cubs suspended Zimmerman a few days later for “laying down on the job”, and ...

Josh Donaldson and John Gibbons were separated after a heated argument in the dugout

Josh Donaldson was not pleased after striking out in the third inning against the Yankees. His tempers boiled over into the dugout, and manager John Gibbons confronted the Blue Jays star.

The incident started when Donaldson threw his bat upon entering the dugout. Gibbons argued with Donaldson about that behavior, but Donaldson wouldn’t back down.

It got to the point that teammates had to step in and pull Donaldson away from his manager. Donaldson also gave catcher Josh Thole a shove while ...
