Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 5-10-2016

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, May 10, 1916:

Thirty bases on balls were given in the game in which Detroit defeated Philadelphia [yesterday], 16 to 2. Eighteen of those passes were handed out by the [Athletics] twirlers, Ray leading with 12, while Cunningham and Boland of Detroit each gave six.

To this day, that’s the record for most walks by both teams in one game. Here’s the box score. Note the time of game: 2:30.

Baseball is magical. Also, “Realmuto is real gone” deserves to get Realmuto called out regardless of whether he passed the runner on the basepaths.

Dan Epstein on Reggie Jackson’s lost season in Baltimore

There was also no question that, even in a stacked field of free agents—it included his former A’s teammates Rollie Fingers, Sal Bando, Joe Rudi, Gene Tenace, and Bert Campaneris—Jackson was clearly the most appetizing entrée on the re-entry draft buffet. Jackson, who had cracked to reporters in 1975 that, “If I played in New York, they’d name a candy bar after me,” was now not joking around at all. He was openly angling to play for the Yankees, even dropping some less-than-subtle on-air ...

Mike North: Jessica Mendoza is worst announcer in baseball

Mike North: “I’ve got to tell you something folks. You know, I’ve been called every name in the book doing this job since the early 90s. Good names, bad names, and everything in between. I’ve been called everything from a pillar in the community to a guy who’s the best who did it in Chicago’s history to a racist and a sexist. I’m going to just tell you right now what everybody else doesn’t want to say, except maybe the regular fan who you see on social media: Jessica Mendoza is the worst ...

OTP 2016 May 9: There’s no politics in baseball

Only one problem. The national tournament May 28 through June 4 is being held for the eighth-straight year in North Carolina. And Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton last month prohibited state employees and state agencies from traveling to North Carolina in protest of that state’s new law prohibiting transgender people from using bathrooms designated for the gender with which they identify.

The governor’s ban didn’t apply to MnSCU (Minnesota State Colleges and Universities) campuses like ...

Javier Baez homer wins it in 13th as Cubs rally past Nationals - Chicago Tribune

The Cubs just aren’t natural. Which type of black magic are they using?

At what point does winning 24 of their first 30 games — including the last seven in a row —become surreal?

“Hasn’t it?” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said with a chuckle. “I mean, I think you’d have to look inside a season to see that kind of a stretch, but when it occurs at the beginning of the season it really stands out.”

Mets edge Padres to split four-game series | MLB.com

The highlights suggest he had three pitches working.

For the first time this season, Harvey’s velocity regularly spiked up to 97 mph. So it was little surprise that the strikeouts followed. Whiffing the side in the first, Harvey struck out six of the first eight batters he faced, finishing with 10. It was his first double-digit strikeout game of the year and the 11th of his career.

WHAT BAN MIGHT REYES FACE?

Jon Heyman breaks news on Facebook now?

Half a season with no testimony from his wife and no formal charges would be an extremely aggressive punishment. It will be interesting to read the explanation from the Commissioner and the MLBPA response.

Jose Reyes should hear his penalty from MLB for domestic abuse soon, and word is that it’ll be at least 60 games and perhaps significantly longer than that.

Eighty games, or about a half a season, may be a fair ballpark estimate, according to some. ...Read More...

WSJ: Falling Fish Delays Japanese Baseball Game

What is the air-speed velocity of a half-eaten fish, Swallows?

The weather in Hyogo, Japan, was mostly sunny with a chance of fish.

A half-digested fish that rained on the outfield of Koshien stadium in western Japan caused a baseball game to be delayed for a few minutes on Sunday.

According to a spokeswoman for the Hanshin Tigers baseball team, the condition of the fish made it clear that it couldn’t have been thrown in from the stands and likely was dropped by a bird that flew over the ...

Red Sox, Price don’t know cause of left-hander’s struggles - providencejournal.com

Remember when the Red Sox didn’t believe in huge contracts for 30+ starting pitchers?

The main reason to be concerned, though, and what manager John Farrell and pitching coach Carl Willis kept coming back to on Saturday, was Price’s diminished velocity. He sat 92 with his fastball on Saturday — his lowest mark of what’s already been his lowest season on the radar gun.

“We just haven’t seen the velocity that he’s had before,” said Willis of a pitcher used to pitching 94 or 95 mph.

While ...

Nick Cafardo: How baseball’s key offseason trades have worked out so far - The Boston Globe

Boston Globe Sunday Baseball Notes column.

According to MLB, entering Thursday, the National League was averaging 4.47 runs per game compared with the American League’s 4.01. The NL has not averaged more runs per game than the AL since 1974 (4.15 to 4.10). The difference of 0.46 runs per game is on pace to be the largest in favor of the NL since 1945, when the NL had a 0.56 advantage (4.46 to 3.90). During the AL’s current 41-year run of averaging more runs than the NL, only five times did ...

“Matt’s feeling good,” Terry Collins said. “There are no arm issues. There’s none of that stuff. He’s just got to make better pitches, and he knows that. You’re talking about one of the best pitchers in the game, who’s not pitching like we know he can. Sure he’s frustrated. I think that’s the easiest word to use. I don’t blame him.
