Angels To Sign Cuban Infielder Roberto Baldoquin For $8MM Bonus

The Angels have reached an agreement with 20-year-old Cuban infielder Roberto Baldoquin on a record-setting $8MM bonus, reports MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez. The agreement is pending a physical and the $8MM bonus is the most ever for an amateur player under the current international signing rules.

Baldoquin has three seasons of professional experience playing with Las Tunas in Serie Nacional, Sanchez writes, and he also appeared on the Cuban National 16-and-under team when he was eligible. ...

Defending the Michael Cuddyer Qualifying Offer

It could be worse, right?

Should we assume that there is about a 10% chance that Cuddyer rejects the QO and tests the free agent market, the net value of the QO becomes even closer to zero, even before you consider what Cuddyer might return in a likely midseason trade.

Yankees have no plans to pursue free agents Pablo Sandoval, Jon Lester or Max Scherzer - NY Daily News

Put the Panda heads away, Yankees fans; Pablo Sandoval isn’t coming to the Bronx. And you can add Max Scherzer, Jon Lester and James Shields to that list while you’re at it.

According to a source, the Yankees have no plans to pursue either Scherzer or Lester, the top two free agents on the market this winter. Shields, the third-best free-agent starter, is also off the Bombers’ radar, as is Sandoval, the Giants’ postseason hero who was given a $15.3 million qualifying offer by San ...

From what I saw of him in Pawtucket, I agree with this writer’s scouting report. At this point, he’s Boggs-light at the plate with similar defensive skills at third base.

Big money in Red Sox budget | Boston Herald

The team has some real holes in the rotation. As I’ve mentioned in other threads, I’d hate to see them invest big dollars on the available starting pitchers. That would be an almost impossible thing to sell to the fans, however.

“We’re just in the process of communicating with agents and other teams to assess what’s out there, what the interest is in the Red Sox, and we’ll take that information going into (this) week, going into the GM meetings, and start to try to execute the bulk of ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-4-2014

Toledo News-Bee, November 4, 1914:

Wilbur Cooper, pitcher for the Pittsburg Pirates, was thrown from his horse [in McConnelsville, Ohio] Tuesday, breaking his right shoulder.

Cooper was a lefty, so at least it wasn’t his pitching shoulder. Wilbur had his worst season in 1915, going 5-16 with an ERA+ of 82 in 185.2 innings. His FIP was roughly the same in 1915 as it was in 1914, so it may have been bad luck. It may also have been a guy giving up more line drives and hard-hit balls because he ...

Boston Red Sox must determine how they’ll spend - ESPN Boston

I’d rather see the Red Sox go five big-dollar years on Lester than four years on Sheilds. Of course, it would be even better if a prospect package could get them a younger top-starter, which is tougher to get done.

Denver Post: Michael Cuddyer receives qualifying offer

Well I for one was not expecting that.

“Michael is someone who has had a great impact on this organization both on and off the field for the past three years,” Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich in a statement. “After weighing our options, we felt the qualifying offer was in the best interest of the organization.”

Cuddyer, who will turn 36 on March 27, is coming off a three-year, $31.5 million deal with Colorado.

Cuban Notebook: Latest Buzz On Cuban Players - BaseballAmerica.com

So, if the Red Sox sign someone like Yoan Moncada, it’s impacts his cost, but it doesn’t impact who they can sign in the future?

The Red Sox could also have interest in Cuban players who fall under the international bonus pools, where they would have somewhat of an advantage over other teams. Like the Yankees and Rays, the Red Sox have already blown well beyond their bonus pool into the maximum penalty range, which means they can’t sign anyone subject to the pools for more than $300,000 the ...

Baseball Still A Major Draw On TV

Fans who stayed up to watch Fox’s prime-time-and-beyond broadcasts of the World Series had a reason — seven reasons, as it played out — to be tired. But they’re not nearly as tired as the stale gripes that baseball is dying…

It helped Fox win prime time for the sixth time during the Series. Given that Royals-Giants wasn’t perceived as a marquee national matchup, the 9.1 overnight rating for the series wasn’t terribly far off from the 10.1 the network drew for the six-game Red ...

Brewers optimistic Ryan Braun is making progress after thumb procedure

The Brewers have a huge financial stake in Braun being able to return to his previous form as a hitter. After next season, during which he has a $12 million salary, a five-year, $105 million extension kicks in that carries through 2020, with a mutual option for 2021 worth at least $15 million more.

That financial commitment is huge for the club ...

Arizona Diamondbacks appear willing to move catcher Miguel Montero | FOX Sports

This is an odd rumor. Unless the the team is ready to risk starting Pete O’Brien, it doesn’t really have a replacement ready.

Montero, 31, is owed $40 million over the next three seasons. And though his offense declined in 2013 and ‘14, he still could be a realistic alternative for teams that strike out on free-agent catcher Russell Martin, particularly if the D-Backs help pay down his remaining obligation.
The D-Backs want to upgrade their starting pitching, but team president Derrick Hall told ...
