Two blind Rockies fans still love a game they can’t see | Nine Innings - The Denver Post

Mark and Peggy LoRusso, married 30 years, sit in the front row and can’t see a thing. And there’s no other place they’d rather be.

“We have no idea what they think a baseball looks like, or a rainbow,” said the blind couple’s close friend, Dan Sauvageau. “It’s something we take for granted every day. It makes you realize how lucky you are, when we take them to a game. It puts everything in perspective.”

“We’re just like anybody else,” Peggy said. “We don’t see it ...

For a Catcher Who Had a Pitcher’s Surgery, Recovery From a Different Angle - NYTimes.com

My theory is that it’s effort,” Wieters said. “Pitchers are now throwing with 100 percent effort almost every pitch they throw out there. I think back in the day, one, they didn’t have all the M.R.I.s and things to find it, but also those guys would save their 100 percent effort for when they needed it.”

Wieters said that Jim Palmer and Scott McGregor, who starred for the Orioles and retired in the 1980s, had told him that. But today’s pitchers, Wieters said, rarely last as long in ...

Bryce Harper a future Yankee? Dodgers may have something to say about that - LA Times

Boston Red Sox’s free fall continue with disastrous loss to Blue Jays - Boston Red Sox Blog - ESPN

Nothing really matters except for the players. If they want the rest of us to keep faith, they have to play well.

“Tough one to swallow,” Napoli said. “But we’ve got to keep going out there and getting after it. No one’s given up in here. We’re going to go out there and play the game the right way and get it done.”

Myth and reality about the Dodger bullpen « Dodger Insider

The bullpen was the Dodgers’ biggest problem last year? Why hasn’t anything been done about that?

Actually, quite a bit has been done. Including the playoffs, the 2014 Dodger bullpen threw 498 innings. Pitchers who threw 236 of those innings — 47 percent — are not with the team in 2015.

OK, but the bullpen is still a huge Achilles heel. Why isn’t it any better?

Actually, it is better. Even before Friday’s game (2 1/3 innings, two unearned runs, three hits, no walks, five ...

Pineda getting bombed is worth it if Yanks’ caution pays off | New York Post

What’s next? How about a good bloodletting and a trepanation? I understand the desire to protect pitchers from injury. Trying to find a one-size fits all solution for pitchers with unique physiologies just seems the wrong way to go. Unless Pineda was showing signs of fatigue, I don’t see the benefit of skipping a start now.

Forgot About A.J. (Pollock) | FanGraphs Baseball

A.J. Pollock is a very, very good player.

The National League has a lot of talented outfielders, and right now Pollock isn’t among their most popular. That’s OK. The Diamondbacks are still a long way from contention, and even with Paul Goldschmidt and Pollock, they certainly don’t have a high-powered attack, so if it’s deemed that Goldschmidt is their only All-Star, well there are worse fates. A.J. Pollock missed half of last season, and as such a lot of casual fans probably don’t know ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 6-12-2015

Milwaukee Journal, June 12, 1915:

Long Larry McLean, second string catcher for the New York Giants, staged a knockdown and dragout fight Thursday night in the lobby of the Buckingham hotel, one of the most exclusive in St. Louis, with “Sinister Dick” Kinsella, scout, of the club, as his chief opponent, and Manager John J. McGraw as a sort of secondary enemy.

During the fracas McLean used a piece of gas pipe in his attempt to “get” Kinsella, but missed, and the Giant scout retaliated by ...

DIRK HAYHURST » The Road Ahead

Some advice for recent draftees.

No one is saying you can’t enjoy the good days—you totally should. But you’re not an awesome person because you played well, or play at all, and you don’t suck at life because you stunk today. Simply put; you get paid to play a kid’s game, and somedays the ball will bounce in your favor and others it won’t. All you can do is train to give yourself more chances at success than the standard distribution calls for. What happens after that is just an ...

Farrell, Miley moving past heated exchange | redsox.com

Pitchers have a better chance of staying in the game when they aren’t giving up rockets.

“He’s a competitor,” Farrell said. “You work four days for your start and he doesn’t want to come out of the ballgame. I fully respect that. I thought he had good stuff overall, but where we were on the scoreboard, I felt like we needed a change of contrast and a change of style and I made a move after four innings.”

The Young and the Restless: What’s Behind Baseball’s Onslaught of Blue-Chip Prospect Debuts? «

There are more prospects coming!

It’s already growing hard to remember that this season started amid outrage that the Cubs were holding back Bryant with an eye toward 2021. In retrospect, this was the wrong season to make a stink about teams putting their finances (or their futures) before their present playoff odds. Up to this point in the season, we’ve been treated to a rare display of blue-chip debuts. And while there’s certainly a cyclical element to the ebb and flow of prospect ...

Take a look at how the MLB Draft breaks down state-by-state | MLB.com

Jim Callis picks the best players by state. I’m not sure how he selected the state. Just looking over the list, I see Jerry Remy is listed in Rhode Island. He was born and raised in Massachusetts.

Edit: I just noticed the writer said, “Note: The states listed here refer to the school the player was drafted out of, not the state in which he was born.” That’s wonky. So, a person who lived his entire life in one state gets misclassified if he goes away to college. In Jerry Remy’s case, he signed ...

Chris Sale is dominating the AL, but one Unit of measurement matters most

Now that’s a funky stat.

Sale joined Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax as the only pitcher since 1900 to produce three consecutive starts of 12 or more strikeouts while yielding no more than one run. He also is the first pitcher in the modern era to record at least 10 strikeouts in four consecutive starts while increasing his total each time, striking out 14 in his last start Monday against the Houston Astros.

Urshela Gets 1st Hit, Home Run but Family Had to Leave Early - NYTimes.com

Giovanny Urshela got his first major league hit in the third inning.

He added his first big league home run in the sixth.

Unfortunately, his family did not get to see either milestone.

“They left in the second inning,” he said.

The 23-year-old Colombian third baseman made his major league debut Tuesday, and his family stayed in town for three days. But his family had to start heading home and couldn’t stay at Progressive Field for the entirety of the Cleveland Indians’ 6-0 win over the ...

The Cyborg with a Mean Curved Ball

You can’t program grit.

Will things be the same way when reactionaries around the game oppose wearable technologies and the introduction of robotics into the game?

If baseball allows robotics and other technologies into the game, the parallels to the current view of analytics won’t end with the debate. For example, the Dodgers might have the best tech department in the game and perhaps some of the less wealthy, more traditional teams will skimp on such extravagances. (Looking at you, ...

DSPN: Ruben Amaro Jr.: How Bad A GM Do You Think I Am?

Last night, CSN Philadelphia’s Jim Salisbury reported that the Mariners are “checking in” on speedy Phillies outfielder Ben Revere. This makes sense: Revere has been squeezed out of his natural left-field role, and despite a down year, is still miles better than what Seattle has been getting from its leftfielders this season.

This morning, the Tacoma News Tribune’s Bob Dutton reported that trade talks are going nowhere because the Phillies are asking for either Taijuan Walker or James ...
