Luckily the Yankees have some big contracts coming off the books.
By the way, that restricted budget almost certainly will leave the Yankees with the majors’ second-largest payroll. That is their strange place — being called cheap while having a huge payroll and trying to win and rebuild at the same time.

Stan Kasten is a very smart guy.
Some people seem stumped as to why a team with your revenue wouldn’t guarantee a sixth year for a pitcher that good. Can you explain?
Kasten: We evaluate stuff very carefully, from performance to contracts to physical conditions to the arc of performance over various ages. We value productivity levels in free-agent contracts. All things factored in, we could not get to a point we felt hamstrung down the road. Having said that, we went beyond what we felt was ...

RIP. Thank heavens he’ll be remembered for the home run in the Championship Series and not the one he hit in the World Series.
Henderson spent 14 seasons split between five organizations (Red Sox, Seattle Mariners, Oakland Athletics, Kansas City Royals and San Francisco Giants). He slugged 197 home runs in 1,538 career regular-season games and earned an All-Star selection with the A’s in 1991.
The man known as “Hendu” will be remembered as much for his infectious personality as his ...

A 16 year-old with these comparisons? O.K., you have my attention.
One veteran American League international scout called him young and raw, but a rare talent with signs of Willie Mays and Bo Jackson, due to his combination of speed and power.
Maybe the guy likes Cincy and doesn’t want to move his family.
TO TURN DOWN TWO trades is a selfish move. The team doesn’t want him. Yes, he is within his contractural rights. But does he want to win? He could have played next year in Washington for the same salary he will make from the Reds in 2016 and have a chance to win.

Petco brings out the crazy.
Two years ago, a man named Derris Devon McQuaig walked into the San Diego County Recorder’s Office and transferred the deed for Petco Park, the home of the San Diego Padres, to himself. For the past two years, he has owned the deed, and nobody can get it back.
The San Diego Union-Tribune has the whole story, which you should absolutely read because it’s a hilarious set of legal loopholes coinciding to leave some dude with the deed to the Padres’ downtown ballpark. ...

This was not an enjoyable read. Apparently Buckley takes the criticism of his ballot a little too much to heart.

No airing of grievances in the Murphy household.
Former New York Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy has agreed to a three-year deal with the Washington Nationals, a club source told ESPN’s Jim Bowden.
Murphy set a major league record with homers in six straight postseason games and earned National League Championship Series MVP honors.

So what’s a poor batter to do. It depends on what the batter is trying to do. If getting on base is the primary goal, then swinging level would appear to the best strategy. You’ll still hit a lot of home runs if the bat speed is high and the aim is good. Indeed that is exactly the approach advocated by Ted Williams, as written in his classic book The Science of Hitting. Someone who hit 521 career home run with a 0.482 lifetime on-base percentage must surely know whereof he speaks.
But to ...

I wish I had noticed this article earlier because I would have added the books to my Christmas list.
Macht’s original proposal envisioned a 300-page book. Then he traveled to Mack’s East Brookfield, Mass., birthplace and knew immediately he would need more to tell the story of a man whose life and career spanned much of baseball and American history.
“The town had all the records - birth, death, voting, school,” Macht said from his Escondido, Calif., home. “I wrote it chronologically. I was up ...

Here’s a picture of Ty Cobb, John Philip Sousa Jr., and one of Cobb’s hunting dogs, published in the Milwaukee Journal 100 years ago today:
I don’t really know why, but I love the idea that Ty Cobb hung out with John Philip Sousa’s son.
O.K., so this is what Craig Calcaterra is writing about now. Actually he was writing this yesterday. I don’t really know what he’s writing about now, although he’s probably just sleeping at the moment.

It doesn’t appear Alex Gordon will be walking through that door, Royals fans.
The Royals have been told by Alex Gordon’s camp that, as things currently stand, they have “no chance” to retain star left fielder Alex Gordon, sources said. Things obviously can change in free agency, but it’s clear at this point that there’s at least a wide gap in talks regarding the longtime Royals outfielder.

Eat your heart out, Jose Bautista. There’s a new sheriff in town. Jesús Guzmán plays for Leones del Caracas in Venezuela, and after his moonshot he decided to send his bat into space along with the ball. This bat flip is a solid 15 feet in the air, maybe more.
Now we wait to see how angry Venezuelan baseball purists get.
“That’s 6-4-3 if you’re scoring at home, or even if you’re by yourself.”
In 2015, according to Baseball Info Solutions, the shift was applied in some form nearly 18,000 times in Major League Baseball. That’s up from 2,400 times in 2010. Which means, countless times, that 5-3 was completed by a third baseman, standing to the first-base side of the second-base bag, who fielded a ground ball up the middle. Yes, the man designated as the “5” made the play. But his designated position was far, far ...
Pittsburgh Gazette Times, December 23, 1915:
Probably the most disastrous war that baseball has ever experienced came to a close [in Cincinnati last night] when a treaty of peace between the Federal League and both parties to the National baseball agreement, known as organized baseball, was signed.
