The Most and Least Generous Strike Zones | FanGraphs Baseball

Not that it’s helped the Astros much.

A big chunk of this is about catcher framing. But you also have run-of-the-mill luck, and plus there’s pitcher identity to take into account. Some pitchers just earn better zones than others, typically because they possess better command. Now, these numbers aren’t perfect, because the PITCHf/x system isn’t perfect. So this isn’t gospel, but below are my results. To this point, the Astros have pitched to the most generous zone. The White Sox have ...

Cooperstown Confidential: Baseball’s Facebook Phenomenon – The Hardball Times

As someone who spends a good deal of time on Facebook, I can tell you full well the benefits that it provides for someone who likes to spout opinions on our National Pastime. If something catches my attention, particularly if it is a current day issue that annoys me (like the recent Adam LaRoche affair), Facebook is a quick and ready outlet that allows for some candid venting. I used to host a sports talk show, which gave me a nightly forum for such ranting, but that’s something from the long ...

Let’s just put the coronation of the Cubs on hold a minute | FOX Sports

We interrupt the coronation of the Cubs to remind you that that the NL Central features two other contenders with powerful offenses.

Yes, the Cubs already lead the Pirates by three games and the Cardinals by 3½; neither of the trailing clubs is pitching as well as expected, while the Cubs rank second in the NL in ERA.

The race, however, remains intriguing.

How Teams Can Get Around International Bonus Pools

The most obvious route, especially in the first year of the international bonus pools, was a package deal. Take a player for July 2 you want to sign for $2 million, but give $1.5 million to him on July 2 and give $500,000 to another player from the same trainer before July 2. Prior to July 2, 2012, there were no bonus pools, so you save half a million dollars from your 2012-13 bonus pool.

While the decision should ultimately be up to the player and his family, the reality is that the trainers ...

Minors 4.26.16: Sizzling Amed Rosario leads St. Lucie to win

ST. LUCIE 10, CHARLOTTE 5: Amed Rosario went 3-for-5 and drove in four runs. He smashed a two-run homer in the seventh to give the Mets a 5-4 lead. It was Rosario’s third long ball of the season and second in three games. Rosario added a two-run triple in the eighth to put the Mets ahead by four runs. Rosario has two four-RBI performances in the last three games. He was seeking a double for the cycle, but was stranded on deck in the ninth.

Rosario is off to a very good start with the bat in ...

FUTURE GIANT HURLS NO-HIT GAME

Erasmus Hall High School won another baseball game by defeating Manual Training High School by a score of 4 to 1…Waite Hoyt, who is under contract with the Giants and who pitched a no-hit game Saturday, relieved Davidson and repeated his feat of holding his opponents hitless. Hoyt went into the box in the second inning, and during the remainder of the game was never touched for even a scratch hit. He struck out ...

FG - Rate Your MLB Broadcaster

Recently, the present author began the process of process of reproducing the broadcaster rankings which appeared on this site roughly four years ago. The purpose of those rankings? To place a “grade” on each of the league’s television and radio broadcast teams — a grade intended to represent not necessarily the objective quality or skill of the relevant announcers, but rather the appeal those announcers might have to the readers of Fangraphs.

I have a feeling I know how CFB will vote ...

When Athletes are left to their own digital dating devices

Tinder’s location-specific search makes an athlete’s road game easier, and longer stays increase the chances of consummating a match, so for MLB players, in particular, scores come in bunches. “Tinder is better for an area you’re not familiar with, so that’s how a lot of guys meet people,” says Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer, who’s off the market but estimates that a third of his single colleagues are right swipers. And that number spikes during spring training, when regulars can punch out by ...

Fivethirtyeight: Statheads Are The Best Free Agent Bargains In Baseball

Even though some of the initial rewards had already been realized by 2009, there were still significant gains to be made by semi-early adopters. To measure them, we built a model estimating how good a team was before its front-office hires, using the following factors for each team: its winning percentages over the previous three seasons, its payroll and market size and its Baseball America farm-system ranking. Using these variables, we generated an expected winning percentage for each team ...

Pittsburgh Press, April 26, 1916:

LAVAN TRIES TO CALL BALK ON OWN PITCHER

For the first time in a big league a team has tried to call a balk on its own pitcher. When Graney stole second in the first inning of Monday’s Indian-Brown battle while Groom held the ball, then took third on Groom’s wild throw, Johnny Lavan rushed in with a wild shout of “balk.” He claimed Groom moved from the pitcher’s pose and that therefore Graney was only entitled to one base on a balk.

Very quick thinking on ...

What happens to teams that start the season hot?

16 of the 20 teams who have won at least 30 of their first 40 games went on to win the pennant. Nine of them won the World Series, six of them losing it (one played before the World Series began).

Most promising for teams that win at a 75% clip through 40 games is the fact that 18 of the 20 teams to do so have finished in first place and advanced to the postseason.

When we look at teams that won at least 17 of their first 20 (twelve total), we see that five of them failed to even make the ...

Generate your own minor league baseball franchise!

‘s been over a year since we helped a professional baseball team choose the name “Hartford Yard Goats.” That was a fun time, but now we’re all kind of used to them. They’re just one creatively silly minor league team name out of dozens.

We need something fresh.

We need an entire alternate universe filled with new minor league teams.

A Record Setting Five Koreans Debut in Major League Baseball

When most fans of Major League Baseball (MLB) think of players from the Pacific Rim, players imported from Japan’s professional league tend to come to mind. Whether it be Ichiro or for a period Dice K Matsuzaka, there have been a string of high profile players coming from Japan to the United States. That perception may be about to change. While more Japanese professionals have played in the major leagues, players from Korea are increasingly making their mark in MLB as well.

Founding Rules of ‘Base Ball’ Sell for $3.26 Million in Auction

Nothing about bat flips though.

“Laws of Base Ball” was put up for online bidding this month by SCP Auctions; the price paid was the most ever for a baseball document but below the $4.3 million paid in 2010 for James Naismith’s original 13 rules of basketball. The most expensive piece of sports memorabilia is a Babe Ruth jersey from 1920 that sold for $4.4 million in 2012.

Walt Whitman, Baseball Reporter

America’s poet expounded on America’s game in this little-known June 18, 1858 editorial from the Brooklyn Daily Times. But these were not Whitman’s only published words on the national pastime: in the 1855 edition of Leaves of Grass appears the line “Upon the race-course, or enjoying picnics or a good game of base-ball”; and in the Brooklyn Eagle of July 23, 1846 (only one month after the Knickerbockers’ purported first match game), he wrote: “In our sun-down perambulations, ...

With ‘no changes’ in MRI, Orioles hope Yovani Gallardo returns in about 4 weeks - Baltimore Sun

A new MRI on Gallardo’s ailing right shoulder Sunday showed “no changes” from the MRI taken two months ago during Gallardo’s club physical, before the Orioles signed him in February, according to an industry source.

Gallardo left Friday’s game in Kansas City after just two innings after feeling discomfort in his shoulder and was placed on the DL before Saturday’s game against the Royals, marking the first time in parts of 10 major league seasons that he has gone on the DL with an arm-related ...

Yadier Molina points out suspicious man with binoculars in Padres’ center-field camera well

Not cool to “hack” into the Cardinals signs like that!

But the practice of sign-stealing goes from an innocent and understandable part of on-field play to a weirder and more concerning competitive advantage if and when teams incorporate agents and technologies beyond the diamond to figure out what their opponents are planning. The Toronto Blue Jays have long been dogged by allegations of a mysterious man in white clothing — the Man in White — who sits in center field at the Rogers Centre ...

Rays notebook: Sternberg lauds Steinbrenner Field renovations | TBO.com and The Tampa Tribune

I am shocked that an owner of sports team would be in favor of tax dollars being put into the pockets of another owner.

“This is a guy who walked 100-plus times in Korea last year, and I think he’s kind of seeing that there’s a little more attack mode here,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “He was telling me that six or seven out of 10 pitches he sees over there are breaking balls.
