Mariners notebook: Finally on Wednesday, it’s Happy Felix Day again | The News Tribune

Ace right-hander Felix Hernandez will be officially activated prior to the game from the disabled list after the Mariners make a corresponding space-clearing roster move.

“I’m ready, man,” Hernandez said. “I was going crazy (in the early) weeks when I wasn’t with the team (on the road). It was the worst time of my career. But I’m good now. I’m ready to go.”

Brian Johnson made a bold decision to tackle anxiety head-on

Alex Speier did a great job on this article. I wish Johnson well.

For now, for Johnson and the team, there is not a need to draw a line to a future destination.

Johnson is back to enjoying life both on and off the mound. And that is enough.

“The biggest thing for me is that it’s one day at a time. I’m not looking a month ahead. If I go out there and pitch well, awesome. If I don’t, it’s one game,” said Johnson. “I haven’t thought about [getting back to the big leagues] once, to ...

Ortiz: MLB fails in hiring Latino GMs, managers | Jesus Ortiz | stltoday.com

Minaya, who currently works for the players’ association, definitely deserves another shot. The Mets thrived and reached the World Series last year with many of the players he left in the system when he was fired in October 2010.

In his annual address to the Baseball Writers’ Association of America before this year’s All-Star Game, Commissioner Rob Manfred noted the “glaring” lack of Latino managers.

Cubs GM Jed Hoyer: ‘Expect the unexpected’ at trade deadline | CSN Chicago

If we expect the unexpected, does the unexpected become expected?

Yes, the market for starting pitching is especially thin at a time when there aren’t that many overall difference-makers available. But Hoyer also pointed to the Red Sox flipping Jon Lester to the Oakland A’s in the Yoenis Cespedes deal at the 2014 deadline (an eye-opening experience outside of Boston that ultimately helped the Cubs sign the $155 million pitcher).

“That was like a total shock,” Hoyer said. “I think we ...

What next for Lopez and Giolito? - Nationals Pastime

Reynaldo Lopez revealed both weaknesses (a very hittable fastball) and strengths (a very unhittable curveball and changeup) in his major league debut last night, enough to leave the Nationals plenty intrigued to see more of the 22-year-old.

“He’s young, this is the big leagues, and you’re facing big-league hitters,” manager Dusty Baker said after Lopez gave up six runs and 10 hits but struck out nine in 4 2/3 innings. “But he’s very bright. Just gotta tighten up a few things. I ...

Cody Reed sharp, but Reds fall to Braves in 11

I’m hoping pick him up in my keeper league.

The left-hander is still searching for his first victory at this level, something he knew he wasn’t getting when he stayed in the dugout of a 2-2 game in the seventh, but he did look more like the prized prospect the Reds believe him to be. His record still stands at 0-4, but his ERA dropped from 8.39 to a slightly less unsightly 6.75.

The potential bombshell Cubs trade that never materialized | FOX Sports

The scenario, according to major-league sources, unfolded like this:

The Cubs tried to acquire left-hander Drew Pomeranz before the Padres sent him to the Red Sox for Class A right-hander Anderson Espinoza — simple enough.

The Cubs’ plan, though, wasn’t to keep Pomeranz, who is under club control through 2018. No, the Cubs wanted to spin Pomeranz for a starter who is under even longer team control.

Clayton Kershaw of Los Angeles Dodgers shut down due to continuing back pain

This isn’t good news for Dodgers fans.

“Clayton, after he threw that live session, the next day Sunday didn’t feel great,” manager Dave Roberts said before Tuesday’s series opener against the Nationals. “I think that at that point and time he let us know that we had to be a little more on the cautious side.

“I don’t know if it’s a step back, but we’re going to let the back pain subside and see where we go. So as far as his return ... uncertain.”

Ichiro Suzuki, still connecting

Long article on ESPN, worth a read.

Kendrick sees a kinship between Ichiro and the black players who integrated the major leagues. It’s not apples to apples. No one fought to keep Ichiro out of the majors. But Kendrick believes he faced similar hurdles.

So many people were skeptical that his skill set would transfer from Japan. People thought he wasn’t as good,” Kendrick says. “I always understood the parallels between the guys coming out of the Negro Leagues and what Ichiro had to deal ...

Cuban prospect Jorge Ona cleared as free agent, expected to sign with Padres | SanDiegoUnionTribune.com

Break up the Padres!

Cuban outfield prospect Jorge Oña has been declared a free agent by Major League Baseball, a source said Tuesday. The 20-year-old is expected to sign with the Padres, which would continue a massive influx of talent into their farm system.

San Diego already has committed about $50 million, including overage taxes, during the 2016-17 international signing period, which opened July 2. Adding Oña, perhaps the best amateur talent left on the market, would give the Padres their ...

Exit Speed and Home Runs – The Hardball Times

I divided up the launch angle into 50 buckets, then found the mean exit speed for each of those buckets, for both 2015 and 2016, pre ASG. And I have to admit that I am very puzzled by this plot. While there is a clear increase in mean exit speed for launch angles in the home run sweet spot, 200-350, the mean exit speeds are essentially identical for line-drive type angles, 00 to 100. This is not what I would expect to find if the ball were indeed juiced. If anything, I would expect the ...

Seeking help for the rotation, Pirates look inside the system and out | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

With Glasnow and Taillon and the options rumored to be out there, I can’t see the Pirates making a deal.

“A very good first half as a starter, and San Diego did a terrific job of turning that into a, some feel, top-20 prospect in the game,” Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said. “It reminds us that it’s a seller’s market and the acquisition costs are going to be steep.

“And it also reminds us that it’s really important to develop your own pitching.”

Sources: Dodgers are open to trading struggling Yasiel Puig | FOX Sports

It’s easy to forget how young he still is.

Perhaps the Dodgers will keep Puig, buying into his latest surge and banking on the fact that he is only 25. Or perhaps they finally are at wit’s end with his performance if not his personality, and will try to sell relatively high, assuming Puig does not regress in the next two weeks.

So, the theory is that he’s not executing???

Since the beginning of June, Arrieta has a 4.81 ERA, the Cubs winning only three of those seven starts. Their ace has thrown 100-plus pitches five times during that stretch, and gone more than six innings just once.

“I just know that I’ve prepared, I’ve planned ahead (and) I have a good idea of what I want to accomplish,” Arrieta said. “Just try and focus on executing. I am confident with all of my stuff. It’s better than good enough to ...

Texas Rangers: The next step in Nomar Mazara’s development: Finding the way out of his first extended slump | SportsDay

Nice use of Statcast info.

While Mazara hasn’t changed his approach at the plate, pitchers seem to have made some changes to him. Mostly, they have taken to throwing more inside, Banister said. And they’ve also refused to give in when Mazara gets ahead in the count, throwing secondary stuff even when behind. Evidence: He’s been ahead in the count more often in the last month than in either of his first two in the majors.

The result: Mazara has gotten jammed more often, hit more ground balls and ...

The strange sensation of wanting Wilmer Flores in the lineup |

But…they have Jose Reyes now.

For nearly two months now, Wilmer Flores has been one of the best hitters on the team. Since coming off the DL in late May and getting regular playing time, Flores has posted a .293/.346/.537 line in 136 PA. If I didn’t see it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have believed it. No one will ever confuse me for being a Flores fan. But right now, the Mets need his bat in the lineup on a regular basis.

Zack Wheeler throwing bullpen sessions, sources say | Newsday

Zack Wheeler has been throwing bullpen sessions at the Mets’ complex in Port St. Lucie, according to multiple sources. They have yet to set a firm schedule, but the righthander’s progress signals that a minor-league rehab assignment could be approaching.

He has thrown off the mound three times, logging just under 30 pitches in his last session on Sunday. It’s an encouraging sign for Wheeler, whose comeback from Tommy John surgery has been derailed by setbacks. He likely will need a full ...
