Kansas City Royals add ultrasound system MuscleSound

Looking for an edge.

Kenney says the players remain divided on the new technology, with some fearing that any information—the technology does read the quality of a muscle—will get used against them in future contract talks, but others stay “very, very interested to see where their body is taking them.”

“We are trying to get guys to optimal levels and increase performance levels,” Kenney says. “That is our intended use.”

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-22-2016

Milwaukee Journal, July 22, 1916:

Hans Wagner, holder of diamond records galore during twenty-one years of big league ball, has added another mark to his string in the form of home run No. 106.
...
His total of 106 probably never will be equaled.

Certainly there’s no chance it could ever be equaled by anyone playing big league baseball in 1916, right?

Ted Berg: I badly wanted MLB to adopt replay before 2014. Now I find it boring and dumb

I get that it’s a complicated thing and there are a million factors I haven’t considered. But the way it is right now kind of stinks, and I can’t imagine it’s actually improving MLB’s on-field product even if it’s technically making it more fair.

Like sports talk radio, it starts more arguments than it solves.

Souhan: Does Pohlad have enough savvy to hire the right GM? - StarTribune.com

Souhan thinks Pohlad is a bumpkin.

Hiring the next big thing is an exercise in research and perceptiveness, and it is difficult. When MacPhail left the Twins after the 1994 season to run the Cubs as one of baseball’s most respected bosses, he wanted to hire a general manager to work below him. On the flight to Chicago, he showed me a list of potential candidates that included Sabean, who has won three of the past five World Series with the Giants. Then he hired Ed Lynch.

On Monday, Pohlad did ...

Heyman - Stewart Defends D-backs From Unnamed Accusations

The best way to answer the critics is to win.

The trade of Brad Ziegler incited some unexpected controversy when unnamed executives complained to a couple reporters that their teams offered a better package (or packages) for the reliever. And one exec even told Peter Gammons that he suspected that Tony La Russa only did that allegedly bad deal with the Boston Red Sox’s Dave Dombrowski because those two worked together with the White Sox three decades ago.

Seems like an unlikely reason to make ...

Pokemon Go craze hits Chicago Cubs clubhouse—sort of - Chicago Cubs Blog- ESPN

You don’t really have to catch them all.

Has the Pokemon Go craze found its way into the Chicago Cubs clubhouse? That was the question put to players this week, as their ability to travel the country and catch Pokemon make them prime candidates for the addicting and popular game.

“I’ve caught two so far,” pitcher Jason Hammel said. “The first one might be a gimme so they can hook you. I’m going to show it to my son, and he will love that.”

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-21-2016

Philadelphia Evening Public Ledger, July 21, 1916:

The Cleveland Club has protested to [American League] President Johnson that the grass at Shibe Park should be cut. Manager Fohl claims that the grass is so long that the outfielders are in danger of tripping or turning an ankle. It is a fact that the grass is longer than any we have ever seen in a major league park, but Mack says it will not be cut until the Mackmen depart for the West. He argues that it would be impossible to cut the grass ...

Top Houston Astros prospect Alex Bregman makes first start in left field, notches three hits for Fresno Grizzlies | MiLB.com News | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball

Bregman sees time in left field.

Alex Bregman can hit. He can play shortstop. He can play third base. On Wednesday night, he added another line to his defensive resume and kept swinging the same bat that has Houston abuzz.

With rumors flying about an imminent promotion to the Major Leagues, the Astros’ top prospect made his first professional start in left field—where he contributed two putouts—and went 3-for-5 at the plate with a run scored as Triple-A Fresno topped Round Rock, 8-5.

Rangers’ Prince Fielder has herniated disk | texasrangers.com

Free Joey Gallo!

The Rangers could be without designated hitter Prince Fielder for the rest of the season after he was diagnosed with another herniated disk in his neck.

Both he and outfielder Shin-Soo Choo, who is dealing with inflammation in his lower back, were placed on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday. The Rangers have recalled infielder Hanser Alberto and outfielder Delino DeShields from Triple-A Round Rock.

The herniation is just above a previous injury that was surgically ...

Rays shut down Cobb to deal with fatigue, mechanical issues | Tampa Bay Times

Their season is over; why push him?

The Rays returned Cobb from his rehab assignment and essentially stopped the 30-day clock, thus, given a mandatory seven-day wait, postponing his next start until at least Monday. Cobb left his second rehab start July 11 after one inning, so he will go at least two full weeks between games. He is scheduled to throw a bullpen session today at the Trop, then possibly a live batting practice next.

Hanley had a huge day, including a homer after getting hit by a pitch. Pomeranz looked good for three innings, then got rocked.

Prospects who are ready to help contenders now | MLB.com

Prospect fatigue is starting to rear its head with Gallo.

3. Joey Gallo, 1B/3B/OF, Rangers (7): He’s been up before, and we all know that power plays anywhere. The question, as always, is will he make enough contact to tap into it at the highest level. He’s still striking out, although not as much as he has in the past, and his walk rate is up. The fact he can play both infield corners and left field gives him added value.

MLB teams spent record $268 million on amateur draft bonuses – The Denver Post

I still wish teams could trade draft picks.

Major league teams have spent a record $267.95 million on signing bonuses for players drafted last month, a 7.4 percent increase from last year’s final total of $249.38 million.

Spending initially declined when restraints were put in place ahead of the 2012 draft, but has gradually risen under the five-year labor contract with the players’ association.

Brian Johnson made a bold decision to tackle anxiety head-on

Alex Speier did a great job on this article. I wish Johnson well.

For now, for Johnson and the team, there is not a need to draw a line to a future destination.

Johnson is back to enjoying life both on and off the mound. And that is enough.

“The biggest thing for me is that it’s one day at a time. I’m not looking a month ahead. If I go out there and pitch well, awesome. If I don’t, it’s one game,” said Johnson. “I haven’t thought about [getting back to the big leagues] once, to ...

Ortiz: MLB fails in hiring Latino GMs, managers | Jesus Ortiz | stltoday.com

Minaya, who currently works for the players’ association, definitely deserves another shot. The Mets thrived and reached the World Series last year with many of the players he left in the system when he was fired in October 2010.

In his annual address to the Baseball Writers’ Association of America before this year’s All-Star Game, Commissioner Rob Manfred noted the “glaring” lack of Latino managers.

Cubs GM Jed Hoyer: ‘Expect the unexpected’ at trade deadline | CSN Chicago

If we expect the unexpected, does the unexpected become expected?

Yes, the market for starting pitching is especially thin at a time when there aren’t that many overall difference-makers available. But Hoyer also pointed to the Red Sox flipping Jon Lester to the Oakland A’s in the Yoenis Cespedes deal at the 2014 deadline (an eye-opening experience outside of Boston that ultimately helped the Cubs sign the $155 million pitcher).

“That was like a total shock,” Hoyer said. “I think we ...

What next for Lopez and Giolito? - Nationals Pastime

Reynaldo Lopez revealed both weaknesses (a very hittable fastball) and strengths (a very unhittable curveball and changeup) in his major league debut last night, enough to leave the Nationals plenty intrigued to see more of the 22-year-old.

“He’s young, this is the big leagues, and you’re facing big-league hitters,” manager Dusty Baker said after Lopez gave up six runs and 10 hits but struck out nine in 4 2/3 innings. “But he’s very bright. Just gotta tighten up a few things. I ...

Cody Reed sharp, but Reds fall to Braves in 11

I’m hoping pick him up in my keeper league.

The left-hander is still searching for his first victory at this level, something he knew he wasn’t getting when he stayed in the dugout of a 2-2 game in the seventh, but he did look more like the prized prospect the Reds believe him to be. His record still stands at 0-4, but his ERA dropped from 8.39 to a slightly less unsightly 6.75.
