The Easter OMNICHATTER, April 16, 2017

Luscious “Luke” Easter was murdered during a robbery on March 29, 1979. From that day he died back until the day he was born, though nobody is sure exactly when that was, Easter lived his life on and off the field in a manner that can be best described as mythical.

It’s Easter Day, right?

Will Jean Afterman be baseball’s first female GM? The sport should be so lucky

TODAY, YANKEES PRESIDENT Randy Levine calls it “inevitable.” Cashman says he can’t think of a reason why not. Yet there still has never been a female GM.

“I’m kind of disappointed her name never comes up,” Nomura says. “I don’t know why. It is very disappointing.”

Afterman’s résumé would certainly qualify her for the job.

“If I could be a GM, she could be a GM,” says Cashman, who, like many of his counterparts, never played professional baseball.

Afterman says she has always wanted to ...

Tigers take precautions against sign-stealing ‘fad,’ but Justin Verlander still hit hard

It’s becoming a sort of tradition: The Detroit Tigers attempt to explain why they are taking unusual measures to prevent sign-stealing at Progressive Field without explicitly accusing the Cleveland Indians of stealing signs.

Justin Verlander was especially cautious after his ugly outing on Saturday, not wanting it to seem as if he were making excuses.

And yet he spent a full hour after the game meticulously watching video of the game with catcher James McCann before he emerged to talk to ...

Sunday Notes: Belisle, Buck on Robots, Mancini’s Pop, Bedrosian’s Role, more | FanGraphs Baseball

David Stearns went in a slightly different direction when I asked him for his thoughts on the subject. The head honcho in Milwaukee’s rebuild addressed the options in explanatory terms.

“There are two things at play there,” said Stearns. “There is style, and there is direction. Those are different. If you’re going to make an acquisition, you certainly want that player to fit your overall direction as an organization — fit the plan, fit the strategy. Style of play is a little bit ...

Astros’ Carlos Correa clarifies stance on potential contract extension - Houston Chronicle

Shortstop Carlos Correa said on Friday he wouldn’t shut the door on a potential early multiyear contract extension with the Astros “if the price is right.”
Correa isn’t eligible to become a free agent until after the 2021 season, but his contract status became a topic of conversation this week after a comment made by his agent, Greg Genske. In a story published Thursday, FanRag Sports Network quoted Genske as saying “Carlos is never going to do an (early) multiyear contract.”

Quakes’ Buehler fans final eight batters | MiLB.com News

Of course, this might say more about their opponent.

Buehler, Wes Helsabeck, Dean Kremer and Shea Spitzbarth (1-0) combined for a season-high 20 strikeouts.

“It was exciting to watch. We have a very talented staff and we’ve got a lot of guys who throw the ball well. I hope we can do that again and I wouldn’t be surprised if we did,” Buehler added. “It was a special night, especially the way Helsabeck finished it with six strikeouts.

How does the president and CEO handle the muck?

“When it comes to evaluation, you fight not to evaluate because everything gets accentuated at the start of a season, as well as emotions and desires, some of the things that make our players special, or how much they care and how competitive they are,” Shapiro said before a 6-4 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night pushed the worst opening in franchise history to 1-9.

Nick Cafardo: Mike Hazen wants to build the Diamondbacks like the Red Sox. But he has a lot to learn.

With the size of the contract, could the Diamondbacks really expect a lot talent back in a deal?

Hazen was asked to respond to prevalent rumors that he will eventually deal Greinke in order to stockpile young talent.

“We understand people talking about that. We haven’t tackled the long-term outlook yet,” Hazen said. “We saw the talent on this team and we really wanted to do everything we could to make this team as strong as possible. We saw strength in the starting rotation and having a ...

Nothing to worry about as Clayton Kershaw dominates again - Los Angeles - Dodgers Report- ESPN

Clayton Kershaw just keeps on pitching well.

“I said it before, but it’s not a lot of fun to face guys you know and consider a friend,” Kershaw said. “We did a really good job against him tonight. We really battled, made him throw a lot of pitches, didn’t give him many easy outs tonight. We kind of broke it open there with a few big hits with runners in scoring position, so hats off to our guys tonight. They really battled well against him.”

They were enemies for one night, but ...

A Year of Futility: The “Amazin’ Mets” First Year, 1962! | “Baseball Comes Alive!”

Some funny nuggets in this article.

Famed New York restauranteur Toot Shor made his son watch the Mets lose game after game, “So the lad would know what the Depression was like.”

In a mound meeting during the 1962 season, Stengel asked his starting pitcher, Bob Miller, how he felt.  “I’m not tired,” Miller said, to which the Old Perfessor replied, “You might not be, but your outfielders sure are!”

Inside the scouting report where Cubs compared Kyle Schwarber to Babe Ruth and called their shot | CSN Chicago

Stan Zielinski and Kyle Schwarber will be forever intertwined.

Amateur scouting director Matt Dorey found himself re-reading old reports after Zielinski’s death: “‘He has an arm action like a cranky shopping-cart wheel,’ things like that where you would just automatically envision the guy with a roll or a rattle at the back of his arm stroke.”

Hendry started cackling over the phone: “‘A one-pitch carnival thrower.’ You know, like guys on dates with their girlfriend trying to win the stuffed ...

MLB: Braves could dig their new (launching) pad

In the end, despite the higher fence in right, the park characteristics project to make more doubles and triples turn into home runs than the other way around from balls bouncing off the wall. While the 325 feet from home to the right-field corner isn’t that far below the league-average distance of 328, the other factors come into play in making SunTrust a projected mild-to-moderate homer-friendly field. The elevation helps the homers, and the small foul territory creates more offensive results ...

JOHN FARRELL: HANLEY RAMIREZ NOT ‘BOYCOTTING’ FIRST BASE, BUT PREFERENCE CLEAR

Hanley Ramirez is not boycotting first base, Red Sox manager John Farrell said Friday, while acknowledging Ramirez’s preference for being the designated hitter.

Farrell said he thinks Ramirez nonetheless wants to play first base at some point.

“I know for a fact he thrives on the DH spot, that’s probably his preference overall,” Farrell said. “But in conversations throughout the winter, once we acquired Mitch (Moreland), the conversations throughout spring training — he ...

How an NFL player’s donated heart saved life of a baseball Hall of Famer

Be an organ donor!!!!

Konrad Reuland spent the last day of his life in a coma as his mother, resigned to her son’s fate, curled up close, rested her head on his broad chest and listened to his heartbeat for as long as she could.

Reuland’s heart, strengthened by his days as a football player at Stanford and in the NFL, sounded as mighty as ever. And Mary lay there from sunrise to sundown savoring the pulsing rhythm. Occasionally, someone would gently nudge her and tell her it was time to ...

Ranking Yankees!

“Who is the greatest Yankee in history after Babe Ruth?”

It’s not a question that would hold any interest for the late George Steinbrenner, who once quipped: “Second place is really first loser.” But we baseball fans are suckers for rankings, so rankings shall commence.

As a hitter, Derek Jeter is second only to Honus Wagner among shortstops; as a defender, Jeter is second to literally every player to ever man the position.

The African-American talent pool remains a troubling problem for baseball

Pirates right fielder Andrew McCutchen, in a MLB Network roundtable airing Sunday at 8 p.m. (ET), issues a telling response when host Harold Reynolds mentions that teams rarely include as many as six black players anymore.

“The question is, why?” McCutchen says.

He then raises his right arm and rubs his thumb against his other fingers, making the universal gesture for money.

“This right here, this right here,” McCutchen says, continuing to gesture. “This is the main reason that you ...

What’s the point of the Matt Adams outfield experiment?

Adams didn’t look very good on any of these three plays, with the first two looking like balls a better outfielder maybe or probably catches. Which is normal, of course, because he’s never played the outfield before, and it would be weird if he already looked like he’d been playing out there forever. This is a guy a month into learning a new position, and doing it on the big stage. None of this is his fault. He’s clearly trying to do something his team wants him to be able to do, and ...

Butte Daily Post, April 14, 1917:

Mamaux, the millionaire kid pitcher of the Pirates, was wild as the proverbial hawk yesterday in the game with the Cubs, and five runs were scored off him in the first round.

Two things:
1. I have no idea what the proverbial hawk is, because hawks seem pretty damn precise to me.
2. I looked it up and Al Mamaux was indeed a millionaire’s son. His dad was the “Awning King”, according to Mamaux’s SABR bio, and I think this is his family’s company. ...Read More...

Last year alone, there were at least 190 pitchers in the big leagues who had returned from Tommy John surgery, according to the tracking of Jon Roegle, who has detailed 1,364 players who have undergone the surgery, beginning with Tommy John himself in 1974.

That included several who pitched well enough that they were traded in season to contenders, including Rich Hill from the Rays to the Dodgers, Mark Melancon from the Pirates to the Nationals and Matt Moore from the Rays to the Giants.

The Complete Reinvention of Elvis Andrus | FanGraphs Baseball

These days everyone’s looking for new-age-y Statcast evidence, so I can tell you this much: In 2015, Andrus ranked in the 36th percentile in average exit velocity. That, obviously, combines his first three months and his last three months. In 2016, Andrus ranked in the 56th percentile in average exit velocity. He was right there tied with Jose Altuve, Mike Napoli, and Aledmys Diaz, so there’s enough strength there to be threatening. Andrus is never going to top any of these Statcast ...

As in-person and TV viewers clash in MLB’s pace-of-play debate, there’s one obvious solution

Accordingly, MLB over the last year has commissioned a pace-of-play study to help it better understand how its product is viewed by fans. And it has only reinforced that finding a solution to satisfy both will be at the heart of whatever changes do arrive within the next year.

There is a growing consensus, a half-dozen league, front office and player sources told Yahoo Sports, that the most effective fix would be a 20-second pitch clock. With a pitch clock already in place in the minor leagues ...
