Giants fans grabs fair ball, possibly ruins life

In the bottom of the seventh inning of last night’s Giants-Diamondbacks game, a Giants fan sitting near the left-field line accidentally reached out and grabbed a fair ball. This happens all the time at baseball games, but things took a turn for the tragic in this instance.

The Phillies Are Curveballing Their Way Into The Future

Nobody’s starters are throwing the curveball like the Phillies starters are throwing the curveball. More than a quarter of all pitches thrown by the Philadelphia rotation have been curveballs. The single-season high by a team in the PITCHf/x era is 24%, by the 2012 Pirates. After that, it’s just 19%, by the 2010 Cardinals. This Phillies team might have the most curveball-heavy rotation since we started tracking such things. Phillies starters have thrown 431 curveballs this season. No other ...

Jason Heyward blitzed with N-word taunts from Cardinals fans in return to Busch Stadium

Jason Heyward’s return to St. Louis was marred with racial slurs.

In addition to booing, ESPN crowd mics picked up multiple Cardinals fans yelling the N-word at the new Chicago Cubs right fielder, who played last season for the Redbirds.

Heyward — who signed an eight-year, $184 million contract in the offseason — spent just one year with St. Louis.

Sadly, fans who who felt slighted by his so-called betrayal, felt booing wasn’t enough to get their point across.

Making baseball players more popular is key point of the next CBA | FOX Sports

Is this really a problem? I like some of the players but I’m more a fan of the laundry than the players.

After meeting with the Giants last offseason, Zack Greinke took a walk to explore San Francisco.

No one recognized him, according to people who were in contact with him that day.

Think about that: Greinke, then a free agent, soon would receive the highest average salary of any pitcher in major-league history. Yet he went unnoticed in a city where fans should have been quite familiar with ...

Ex-Cardinal Heyward is where he wanted to be

Once all of his suitors made their financially generous overtures, it became clear to outfielder Jason Heyward that no matter what baubles and clauses the Cardinals were willing to add they could never offer what he truly wanted.

They didn’t play in Chicago.

They didn’t have the Cubs’ young players.

“It came down to Chicago was really where I would like to be at the time,” Heyward said Monday. The Cardinals “made a trade for me. They traded a couple good pieces. I feel like they ...

OTP: Randy Levine on GOP’s Foul Ball: Rules Deny Voters’ Will, Trump Wins

Working party officials, much like coaches work referees is acceptable. Sen. Cruz is doing exactly this.

But once a state votes and the results are in, the candidate who wins the most votes should be awarded the most delegates. Even more important, voters should be allowed to participate in every manner throughout the process.

A situation like Colorado, where party officials changed the rules to exclude voting is akin to a rainout that was never rescheduled or played. A game in which the ...

The Rise and Fall of Rafael Palmeiro

At the far end of the Mexican restaurant just off the highway in a Dallas suburb, he slides into a booth.

“I could still do it,” Rafael Palmeiro says. “If I had to play a full season, I could probably hit .270, with 25 home runs. It’s between the ears, man.”

The restaurant is half-full for lunch, and the pop music on the speakers drowns out any noise. A lanky, 30-something waiter comes by every five minutes, pauses and asks if he wants water, or if he’s OK. Each time the waiter ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-19-2016

Toledo News-Bee, April 19, 1916:

HORRORS! PEANUT SUPPLY RUNS OUT

Along about 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Swayne field (in Toledo) some of the fans who had been in line since about noon in order to get seats, began to grow hungry. Then came the demand on the peanut men. It was so great the supply ran out and crackerjack had to be substituted. Before the end of the game the crackerjack supply was pretty low.

Yanks’ bullpen is redefining nasty — with monstrous help coming | New York Post

Now the Yankees just need to score more runs so their bullpen will have more leads to protect.

Betances has struck out eight straight batters and 14-of-15. Miller, who picked up his third save, has struck out seven in a row and 12 of the 17 guys he has faced this season. Neither has yielded an earned run.

“Those guys are ridiculous,” Brian McCann said. “They’re as uncomfortable an at-bat as you can have in baseball.”

Yet help is coming in the form of Aroldis Chapman after he serves ...

Felix Hernandez Is Not Right | FanGraphs Fantasy Baseball

If you are a Felix owner, he has done you all a great favor by not allowing a homer, posting just a .200 BABIP, and stranding over 80% of runners. All that good fortune has masked his poor pitching so far and given you a window with which to shop him. Surely someone in your league will stop at the 1.00 ERA, think all is fine, and be willing to give up a pretty good hitter, or even a comparable pitcher. How about Corey Kluber?

This may all just be an early season blip, and for all we know, ...

OTP 2016 April 18: How politics played a major role in the signing of baseball great Jackie Robinson

The Communist newspaper The Daily Worker, which was published in New York City, began campaigning for integration in baseball shortly after Jesse Owens won four gold medals at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. Sportswriters for The Daily Worker, including sports editor Lester Rodney, compared the racism in Nazi Germany to the racism in the United States.

During the next decade, the newspaper published hundreds of columns and articles calling for the desegregation of baseball. Its ...

Peter Gammons: Troy Tulowitzki, Travis Shaw, and attention to the defensive side - GammonsDaily.com

While the Blue Jays watch Tulowitzki’s work ethic so that he gets rid of throws strongly, quickly and accurately however he reaches them, so too, on the other side the Red Sox have come to marvel at the throwing of Travis Shaw.

Now, for a guy who was moved to first base for awhile, Shaw’s athleticism has surprised the coaches and the front office. “I know I am very impressive with his defense,” says Dave Dombrowski. “Travis gets rid of the ball very quickly,” says Brian ...

This is about the opening of doors for everybody,” Hurdle said, according to the Beaver County Times. “I still believe firmly there is going to be a day where there is a female player in the big leagues. Costner said he wasn’t sure if he’d follow through on the project, but said “I’ve got to get it written.”

Vulture: Everybody Wants Some!! Is Effortless Fun.

The time is late August, 1980, when an agreeable 18-year-old named Jake (Blake Jenner) arrives at Texas Southern University, where he’ll be pitching on the baseball team. His “dorm” is a ramshackle house for fellow baseball players, and the atmosphere in those few days before classes and games begin is loose. The looseness is deceptive, though, because even as these athletes devote most of their waking hours to chasing women (with one practice session), they’re taking one another’s ...
