Matt Harvey to have season-ending surgery | MLB.com

Matt Harvey will undergo season-ending surgery to resolve his thoracic outlet syndrome, agent Scott Boras told ESPN on Friday. Neither the Mets nor Harvey have confirmed his decision, though general manager Sandy Alderson on Thursday painted it as inevitable.

Who will host future All-Star Games?

Here are the current MLB stadiums that have never hosted an All-Star Game:

Citizens Bank Ballpark, Philadelphia
SunTrust Park, Atlanta (opening next year)
Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg
Yankee Stadium, New York (the new one, of course)

There are also five active stadiums that haven’t hosted the game in more than 20 years:

Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles (1980)
Oakland Coliseum, Oakland (1987)
Wrigley Field, Chicago (1990)
Rogers Centre, Toronto (1991)
Camden Yards, Baltimore (1993)

So, with ...

Milwaukee Journal, July 8, 1916:

President Ban B. Johnson of the American league fined “Wild Bill” Donovan, leader of the Yankees, $100 for sending his trainer, Jimmy Duggan, into the upper pavilion at Shibe Park, Philadelphia, last Saturday to wallop a noisy spectator.

Walter B. Shive yelled down to “Wild Bill,” telling the Yank manager something about his early history. Bill was too busy with his managerial duties at the time to climb to the second pavilion, so called for his pinch hitter to ...

The Mets need their Dark Knight | SNY

Yesterday, the Mets announced that Harvey has been put on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder discomfort, which sources say could be thoracic outlet syndrome, according to Newsday’s David Lennon.

In surveying people the last 12 hours—be it insiders, media, fans, etc.—I see people split 50-50 on whether they think this is a legit injury or just a cover to get Harvey two weeks away from the team.

The Mets will hopefully make an official announcement today about Harvey’s status. In the ...

Yankees’ top prospect mouthed off to execs and got suspended | New York Post

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, top Yankees prospect Jorge Mateo expressed his displeasure about not getting promoted from Single-A Tampa to Double-A Trenton, but there were indications that might not have been the reason the infielder was hit with a two-week suspension that was announced Wednesday night.

Because he will be suspended, Mateo will not participate in the Futures Game this Sunday in San Diego. News of the suspension was delivered through the Yankees public ...

Baseball Prospectus | BP Top 50

BP’s midseason prospect Top 50.

1. J.P. Crawford, SS, Philadelphia Phillies
Why He’ll Succeed: He has the broadest base of skills in the minors, and one of those skills is plus defense at shortstop. Couple that with a strong hit tool and approach, note the double-digit home run potential, and you may be looking at a perennial all-star at shortstop.

Why He Might Fail: Crawford hasn’t hit as much against upper-minors competition as you’d like to see from your top prospect, the glove and ...

Dusty Baker Says Nats Fans Could Be More Boisterous

“Some of the guys on the team wish our fans were a little more boisterous and crazy. A little bit like we see in different stadiums when we’re on the road. We also realize that a lot of our fans are new Nationals fans. A whole bunch of them were Cubs and Mets [fans], wherever they come from. That’s the dynamics of D.C., which you realize. But we’re trying to win everybody to us.

We need their energy, big time. Especially on days, there are some days when you don’t have the energy. There’s ...

Seven Changes that Would Improve the Era Committee Hall of Fame Election Process

Thus far, each sub-committee has convened twice with the Expansion Era voting in 2010 and 2013, the Golden Era voting in 2011 and 2014, and the Pre-Integration Era voting in 2012 and 2015.  However, in its short history the Era Committee process has drawn a fair share of criticism for a variety of reasons and with December’s Pre-Integration Era vote representing two full cycles under the current format it is likely that the Hall of Fame board members will review and possibly modify to the ...

At this point he has great stuff but only so-so command.

The club has not confirmed the news that Glasnow, Pittsburgh’s No. 1 prospect, is coming up from Triple-A Indianapolis. But a Pirates source confirmed that Glasnow is expected to start Thursday afternoon at Busch Stadium.

MLB—Bad teams shouldn’t keep stars out of All-Star Game

There once was a time when every team in baseball deserved to have an All-Star to call its own. Unfortunately, that time was, oh, about 1957. Not now.

So on Tuesday night, when the 2016 All-Star teams were announced, Eduardo Nunez wound up on this team—as the Minnesota Twins’ mandatory rep—but Carlos Correa didn’t.

And Alex Colome was on this roster—as the Tampa Bay Rays’ designated All-Star—but Aroldis Chapman wasn’t.

The Philadelphia Phillies had to have an All-Star, too, so Odubel Herrera ...

The Atlanta Braves Borrowed Their Parking Scam From Dan Snyder

Last week, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that the Braves had quietly asked for and received new traffic ordinances from Cobb County lawmakers. The Accessory Special Event Parking rule, which is among those edicts, bans all privately owned parking lots near the team’s new stadium from operating on game days when it opens next season.

There will be no public transportation to the stadium, so people will have to drive, and park, and the rule effectively stipulates that only the team ...

Bryce Harper Retires From Home Run Derby

On Tuesday, Harper told The Washington Post he has no plans to participate in the 2016 derby in San Diego, either.
In fact, Harper isn’t sure if he’ll ever do the Home Run Derby again. At least, that’s how he feels as of July 5, 2016.
I just don’t want to, plain and simple,” he said after Tuesday night’s loss to the Brewers.

Brayan Pena to serve U.S. Army

The phone call from the military recruiter that Cardinals catcher Brayan Pena had been waiting for came Tuesday, and if the U.S. Army calls again asking him to serve, he said he would probably leave baseball to do so.

Pena, 34, has been exploring the possibility of joining the U.S. Army Reserves, and he learned Tuesday that he will be able to participate in training and work as an ambassador, but his contract with the Cardinals forbids him from officially enlisting. But he feels called to ...

Digging Deep Into Inside Edge’s Fielding Data – The Hardball Times

If you are interested in defensive metrics, this is a must read. Great work!

I originally sought to better understand Inside Edge’s defensive data on my accord and articulate the context of the data here. But my exploration evolved when anecdotal evidence seemed to turn into something more. En route, I offered here limited but still quantitative evidence that WAR, as we now calculate it, fails to properly account for the difficulty of defensive seasons, at least in the tail ends of the ...

Red Sox add Brian Bannister to coaching staff | redsox.com

In an effort to get better results from a pitching staff that has struggled for much of the season, the Red Sox have given Brian Bannister a role on the coaching staff, effective immediately.

Bannister was hired last September to be the team’s director of pitching analysis and development. He will now work along with pitching coach Carl Willis to help the Major League club on a daily basis.

Due to Major League rules, Bannister won’t be in uniform during games. But he will be on the field ...

Jameson Taillon put on the disabled list, Steven Brault to start Tuesday | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Pirates put right-hander Jameson Taillon on the 15-day disabled list after their game Monday because of right shoulder fatigue, further thinning a rotation already suffering due to Gerrit Cole’s injury.

Taillon was scheduled to start today. To take his place, the Pirates will promote left-hander Steven Brault from Class AAA Indianapolis. Brault, 24, will make his major league debut.
