Sunday Notes: Vizquel, Lindor, Shipley, Ryan, Mussina, more | FanGraphs Baseball

Nolan Ryan was a freak.

A couple of Nolan Ryan factoids, which would read as unbelievable if they weren’t about Nolan Ryan:

A total of 489 players had at least one plate appearance against Ryan without recording a hit. Gates Brown, with 31, had the most. He went 0 for 24 with seven walks against Ryan.

On June 14, 1974, Ryan had 19 strikeouts and 10 walks over 13 innings in a game against the Red Sox. Ryan reportedly threw 235 pitches. Four days later, he threw six shutout innings against the ...

Nick Cafardo: Here are some scenarios that could develop at baseball’s Winter Meetings

Nick Cafardo takes on the Winter Meetings.

1. You could easily see the Red Sox and White Sox or Red Sox and Tigers hooking up on a megadeal. The Red Sox could easily pull off a Chris Sale-Jose Abreu trade if they’re willing to give up Andrew Benintendi or Yoan Moncada, as well as Jackie Bradley Jr., Eduardo Rodriguez, and Blake Swihart. They could pull off a Miguel Cabrera-Justin Verlander deal with the Tigers if they were willing to include the above players or add Michael Kopech. Why do it ...

Heyman: Giants, Nationals At Forefront For Melancon

Relievers are getting paid this winter.

Sources indicate to FanRag Sports that the San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals are currently at the forefront in terms of suitors for Melancon, and he is expected to sign a deal that will break the current reliever record held by Jonathan Papelbon, who signed a four-year, $50 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies in November, 2011 (though that record will surely be broken by Chapman and Jansen later this winter).

Twins must be “really inspired” to trade Brian Dozier

Kinsler has been the superior player but he’s six years older. Whether that age difference will show up in his play over the next two seasons is questionable.

While Dozier, 28, is signed for two more seasons at a combined $15 million, the 34-year-old Kinsler could be controlled through 2018 for just $6 million more if his option is exercised. Kinsler, a four-time all-star with superior defensive metrics to Dozier’s, can block trades to 10 teams, including the Dodgers, owners of perhaps the ...

Carlos Beltran agrees to one-year, $16M deal with Astros

Free agent Carlos Beltran has agreed to a one-year deal worth $16 million with the Houston Astros, a source told ESPN’s Buster Olney.

The deal also includes a full no-trade clause, according to the source.

Cubs sign outfielder Jay to 1-year contract

Now they just have to sign free agent Matt Holliday to have the Cardinals’ 2015 starting outfield.

With incumbent center fielder Dexter Fowler weighing his options in free agency, the Cubs plucked another player off the open market, agreeing with veteran Jon Jay on a one-year contract worth $8 million.

Column: Nationals Must Go For It All To Win With Harper

I’m not sure I’d describe the market for relievers as “saturated”.

Mark Melancon impressed in his time with the Nationals. Kenley Jansen and Aroldis Chapman are two of baseball’s best late-inning relievers. Wade Davis, David Robertson and A.J Ramos can be had in trades. If they’re dead-set against spending big on a short reliever, they can give Treinen a chance and see if he develops while signing insurance policies like Fernando Rodney, Koji Uehara, Joe Smith or Brad Ziegler.

The saturated ...

Free-agent catcher Jeff Mathis signs with Diamondbacks

Jeff Mathis signed a two-year, $4 million deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday, a source confirmed to the Sun Sentinel, ending his four-year tenure as Miami’s backup backstop.

The loss is a noteworthy one for the Marlins, who benefited from Mathis’ defense behind the plate and valued his veteran presence in the clubhouse.

Braves Acquire Jaime Garcia

Despite Garcia’s 2016 struggles, he’ll bring to the Braves a career 3.57 ERA with 7.3 K/9, 2.6 BB/9 and a 56.5 percent ground-ball rate in 896 innings as a Major Leaguer. Shoulder injuries have limited him throughout his career, and he missed time with a groin strain as well in 2016, but he’s averaged 151 innings in 2015-16 and made a total of 50 starts in that time.

Rays pretty much strike out in MLB’s new labor deal

“Disappointed in what we’ve seen so far,” Rays baseball operations president Matt Silverman said. “I’m not optimistic about the CBA in terms of helping us as a lower-revenue club.”

The Rays had hopes, as they did in the last CBA negotiations and the one before that, for some assistance.

Specifically, they have been seeking draft reform, a change in the system that would give them more picks, or higher picks, or, even better, more higher picks based on their market size and revenue totals, ...

How the new CBA is helping the Yankees | New York Post

Some reports have suggested some parts of the new CBA will hurt big market teams. Maybe some of those drags on payroll will be offset by changes like this one. We’ll see how it all plays out.

Yet, two factors in the new CBA help the Yankees regarding the luxury tax, which moves from $189 million to $195 million for the 2017 season. It will be $197 million in 2018, $206 million in 2019, $208 million in 2020 and $210 million in 2021, the final year of the deal.

First, the previous CBA had a ...

The inside details from baseball’s fascinating new CBA

Jeff Passan provides some details on what looks to be a much more complicated deal.

If a revenue-sharing payee loses a player it gave a qualifying offer to a contract for $50 million-plus, that team receives a pick right after the first round and for under $50 million after the second. Teams over the luxury tax don’t get a pick until after the fourth round. The rest of the teams are given picks after the second or third rounds. If a team receiving revenue sharing signs a qualifying-offer ...

We’ve got a good candidate in Trey Mancini in-house. Mancini should be able to hit. He’s got a proven hitting record in the minors. He’s got good fundamentals. According to reports from Yonhap News’ Jeeho Yoo and Korean outlet Naver, Pirates third baseman Jung Ho Kang has been charged with leaving the scene of a DUI crash in Seoul. It’s Friday in South Korea, and Kang was reportedly arrested at 2:48 a.m. local time with a blood alcohol level of 0.084 percent. That’s a shade over the legal limit in the United States, but it’s well above the 0.05 percent limit in South Korea….

Nightengale: MLB kills ‘this time it counts’ for stronger All-Star Game incentive

The idea was ridiculed from the outset, and the slogan mocked.

This time it counts.

Really, no one liked the idea that the All-Star Game winner determined home-field advantage in the World Series.

But you know what?

It actually worked.

The All-Star Game was immeasurably better after the 7-7 tie in the 2002 All-Star Game in Milwaukee.

Players actually stuck around until the end of the game. Managers managed the game as if it were a game that meant something. There were players even picked ...

Why baseball’s new CBA could ultimately hurt the players | FOX Sports

It’s tough to feel bad about major leaguers when international players and minor leaguers aren’t considered.

One thing is clear: The union agreed to greater spending limits, for both major leaguers and international amateurs, than ever before. It’s reasonable for some agents to be concerned about where this CBA will lead. We just don’t know the full impact yet.
