Hughes, who won 16 games in his first season in Minnesota, has been rewarded with a three-year extension that will pay him an additional $42 million, the team announced Monday. The righthander’s $8 million salary in each of the next two seasons has been increased to $9.2 million, and he will earn $13.2 million per year from 2017-2019.
That makes the Twins’ total commitment to Hughes $58 million over the next five seasons. It’s the longest commitment the Twins have ever made to a starting ...

So it was announced that Miller Park would now contain something called “The Selig Experience,” and this is not something I am making up, either. Neither am I making this part up:
The exhibition space totals approximately 1,400 square feet, and will include authentic artifacts from Selig’s tenure as the Brewers owner. A multimedia show will include a 3-dimensional encounter with Selig inside a reproduction of his old Milwaukee County Stadium office.
The number of people who had a ...

The Pirates have won the bidding for Korean infielder Jung-ho Kang, tweets Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. The amount of the winning bid has yet to be reported, but Kang’s former club, the Nexen Heroes of the Korea Baseball Organization, will reportedly accept the bid.
The Heroes, you say???
Those who challenge the notion that Johnson is the best lefty of all time commonly invoke Sandy Koufax’s name. While even the most ardent Koufax proponents have to concede that their man wasn’t all that great until the final six years of his career, those six seasons have taken on mythic proportions and are often held up as the greatest peak years by any pitcher.
Well, it turns out that Johnson’s best six-year run compares favorably with Koufax’s: The Big Unit won four consecutive Cy ...

Omaha Daily Bee, December 22, 1914:
Charles Weeghman, president of the Chicago Federals, [yesterday] announced that he had submitted to his counsel the case of Walter Johnson, star pitcher, who Saturday signed up with his old team, the Washington Americans, after having recently accepted a contract with the Chicago Federals.
“Walter Johnson will play with the Chicago Federals next year or not at all,” said Weeghman. “I have laid the case before counsel, and we will fight it to the United States ...
Yankee owner George Steinbrenner died in 2010, but his appreciation for the men and women in blue who protect New York City lives on.
For 32 years, Steinbrenner’s Yankee Silver Shield Foundation has provided for the education of the children of New York City police officers, firemen and Port Authority employees who died in the line of duty, and will do so for the family of NYPD officer Rafael Ramos, gunned down by a cold-blooded killer Saturday along with his partner, Wenjian Liu.

Nobody is sure what to expect of Kang. We’ll find out soon enough.
The easiest way to summarize the risk is this: Kang just finished second in the league in home runs. In third, with 37, was one Eric Thames. Thames also finished with a four-digit OPS, and in North American Triple-A, he slugged .506. Thames, in the majors, has slugged .431. Meanwhile, Yamaico Navarro just hit 31 homers in Korea, with an OPS of .969. He was worse than that in Triple-A, and he never did anything in the bigs. This ...
Jim Allen is back writing about Japanese baseball on his new blog.
When you grow up with a singular focus, whatever it is, you may find yourself relating to Will Ferrell’s character in “Elf.” Explaining his eating habits to his new family, the man-child from the North Pole says he sticks to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup.
For me, the diet was baseball, baseball games, baseball cards and pitching. That was my sustenance, and I suppose I should thank Sy Berger for his role as a vendor. I emptied my pockets of quarters ...

More good stuff from David Lauria.
“When I coached in Detroit, our game plan was to be patient,” said McClendon. “It was to take pitches and get to the other team’s middle relief. Well, middle relief is now throwing 98-99 mph. You’re not in such a hurry to get to it, and as a result, I think you’ll see hitters more on the attack and trying to score early.”

Noble’s votes: Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson, and John Smoltz
This is without a doubt the worst HOF ballot and article I have ever seen. It would be well worth stripping the BBWAA of the vote just to get rid of this guy…

The Jeff Jacobs HOF Ballot (10) P. Martinez, R. Johnson, Smoltz, Biggio, Bagwell, Piazza, Schilling, Raines, E. Martinez and Mussina.
That means no vote for Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Alan Trammell, Larry Walker, Fred McGriff, Lee Smith, Jeff Kent, Don Mattingly, Nomar Garciaparra or Gary Sheffield.
With full disclosure, comes this, too: If Bonds or Clemens is voted into Cooperstown by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, without a loud and official ...

NEW YORK (AP) — Several people familiar with the deal say Major League Baseball and its umpires have reached agreement on a five-year labor contract.
The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Friday because both sides still need to ratify the deal next month.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have ended the New York Yankees’ 15-year streak as Major League Baseball’s biggest spenders and owe more than $26.6 million in luxury tax.
RIP George Steinbrenner.
“We’ve talked to Ryan,” Amaro said in an interview with 97.5 The Fanatic’s Mike Missanelli on Friday afternoon. “And I told him that in our situation it would probably bode better for the organization not with him but without him. With that said if he’s with us, then we’ll work around him. We’ll hope he puts up the kind of numbers that we hope he can and we’ll see where it goes from there.”

The Yankees already have said that Alex Rodriguez will not be their third baseman. But just as interesting is that if he is not healthy enough to play in 2015, the Yanks are currently planning to use the roster space to go with platoons at both second base and shortstop.

The Giants filled their third-base vacancy on Friday night, announcing they obtained Casey McGehee from the Marlins for a pair of Minor League right-handers.

“Right now, it’s my goal and I want to be ready to start the season on opening day, but at the same time, we’re too early to know,” Wieters said. “This is not something where we want to set a deadline date where I need to be ready. I don’t want to rush it and have a setback.
“I think everybody’s end goal is for me to get back healthy and be full go and be ready to go. That’s my goal. I want to play as many games as I can and catch as many as I can, but at the same time I need to see what kind ...

“We just didn’t see the kind of tenacity and the kind of leadership that we’ve seen in the last five months from the baseball-operations side. We just felt a great deal of confidence in A.J. and how prepared he is. I’ve worked around other great GMs in my baseball career, and all of them had an eye for talent and worked hard. But when everybody else maybe kicks back for the night, A.J.’s like, ‘I’m going to hang back here,’ and then he’ll look at another hour-and-a-half of ...

In the Mets’ most recent conversations with the Rockies, during last week’s Winter Meetings, the Rockies wanted three or four top players — some current major leaguers, some prospects still in the minors — and also wanted the Mets to assume the entire $118 million that Tulowitzki has guaranteed through 2020.
