Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-11-2017

Bismarck Tribune, December 11, 1917

Who is the hardest hitter in baseball today? The question conjures the names of Gavvy Cravath, Luderus, Cy Williams, Wally Pipp, Bob Veach, Joe Jackson and other kinds in extra base land.
...
Eight out of 10 pitchers when asked whom they considered the longest hitter, declared without much hesitation in favor of Babe Ruth.

“A bunt with that fellow is a double,” one of them said. “Every time he is up there I wonder how many boards he will knock off the fence.” ...

Texas Rangers: Shohei Ohtani or not, Rangers still considering nontraditional 6-man, 4-man rotations next season | SportsDay

If you are asking your starters to pitch fewer innings per start, why not move to the four-man rotation?

“I think we will get through the offseason and look at where our personnel is before we determine usage,” Daniels said Sunday. “I’ve said there are benefits to a six-man rotation and to a four-man. And there are benefits to a five-man rotation, too. But we’ve got to see where we are.”

OTP 11 December, 2017 - GOP strategist: Moore would have ‘date with a baseball bat’ if he tried dating teens where I grew up

“I grew up in Mississippi. Every father I knew, if he saw a guy like Roy Moore in his 30s trying to date his 16-year-old daughter, he would have had a date with a baseball bat,” Stevens, a former aide to Mitt Romney’s campaign, said on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360.”

Stevens, who worked on former Alabama Gov. Bob Riley’s (R) primary campaign against Moore in 2006, said Moore has violated the “decency standard” of civil society in his previous alleged pursuit of teenage girls.

Peter Gammons: Splashes and notes from the Orlando Winter Meetings - GammonsDaily.com

Stanton and Judge are from the same cloth, modest, respectful, thoughtful. They’re now the biggest show in baseball. Red Sox fans do not want to waste an Advent Sunday thinking about the potential of having four lefthanded starts in their rotation against them, plus Sanchez and Torres…or the reminder from one Yankee official that Frazier and Miguel Andujar will be in there sometime this season.

Oh yes, and Cashman and Steinbrenner have them under the luxury tax threshold, so instead of ...

After losing out on Shohei Ohtani, here’s who Jerry Dipoto and the Mariners could target next | The Seattle Times

“If history tells you anything, it’s that there’s always more activity when we all get together,” he said. “In this particular case because it has been a slow to develop market, I think there will be a flurry of action because there has been so little to this point. My guess as we get closer to this weekend, history tells us, that as teams start to make their way toward the winter meetings that there tends to be an uptick in the activity. I’d be surprised if that wouldn’t be the ...

Mets have talked to teams about trading Matt Harvey: sources - NY Daily News

Flip him for a reliever. His stock can’t get much lower.

“They are willing to move him,” one source said, “and they said they wanted to try and flip him for a reliever. They seemed more willing to move him then (Robert) Gsellman or (Seth) Lugo.”

For Ex-Big Leaguers in Japan, Ohtani A Special But Not Invincible Talent | BaseballAmerica.com

OK, we’ve all seen a lot of coverage on Ohtani. One option I haven’t seen mentioned is, why not have him work out of the bullpen for the next year or two while giving your team some time to make a decision about the long-term value of his bat? I know there might be some issues getting him warmed up but, with his limited innings last year, it might be a workable idea that appeals to him in his quest to be a true two-way player.

2017 Rule 5 Draft Preview V 1.1 | BaseballAmerica.com

1. Burch Smith, RHP, Rays
Smith missed all of 2015 and 2016 recovering from Tommy John surgery but came back looking like the player who was once an intriguing prospect. Both at the end of the season at Triple-A Durham and in the Arizona Fall League, Smith sat 94-96 mph with his fastball, flashed a knee-buckling 74-76 mph curveball and showed a swing-and-miss 79-81 mph changeup. Though he’s 27 and has had serious arm health issues, Smith is major league ready and has the stuff to help a team ...

Report: Stanton trade list includes 4 teams | MLB.com

Maybe this info should have leaked out sooner. Maybe Jeter should have included Stanton in the process from the beginning.

On Thursday night, MLB Network Insider Ken Rosenthal reported Stanton is electing not to accept proposed deals to those two teams, both of which had previously worked out trade frameworks with Miami.

The report added Stanton would consider trades to the Dodgers or Yankees. Another report, from Craig Mish of SiriusXM, added the Cubs and Astros to the list of Stanton’s ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-8-2017

Washington Times, December 8, 1917:

Branch Rickey, president of the St. Louis Cardinals, through President Tener, of the National League, today issued a denial of a story…that he would suggest to the National League magnates that all their profits in 1918 should be given to the Government. Rickey says such action would be foolish, and that he is not yet a fool.

I wonder if that story was planted by Cubs owner Charles Weeghman, who (from what I can tell) absolutely did not get along with Rickey. ...Read More...

Heyman | The Upshot Of The Braves Penalties

A good rundown by Heyman.

2. THE 13 PLAYERS LET GO
All of these players will receive a fresh start and some an undeserved monetary boost since presumably at least a few were complicit in the shenanigans. Some are highly regarded and will turn out to be pretty good, so this definitely hurt the franchise (as do future penalties). Many believe infielder Kevin Maitan might need just that, as he didn’t perform to the level of his $4.25 million bonus.

The allegation was that the Braves agreed with ...

Mariners Acquire Gordon As Marlins Pick Up Trio Of Prospects | BaseballAmerica.com

Mariners acquire:

Dee Gordon, 2B/CF

Age: 29

A two-time all-star with the Dodgers and Marlins, Gordon will move to the outfield for the first time in his eight-year big league career in 2018. Gordon’s plus speed, which helped him to a major league-best 60 stolen bases last season, should help ease the transition, however. As long as Gordon proves he is capable of playing an average centerfield, his bat should help the Mariners immediately. Last season, the Mariners’ primary centerfielder ...

If Sandy Koufax is a Hall of Famer, Johan Santana Is Too

Perhaps most importantly, enshrinement of Johan Santana would not open the floodgates for a parade of less-qualified players to enter. There are very few players who can argue that they fit the “Koufax Exception” to the Hall of Fame — let’s call it 50+ WAR, multiple Cy Young awards, and a career cut short by injury — who don’t probably otherwise deserve to be in the Hall of Fame anyway (looking at you, Curt Schilling and Kevin Brown). It wouldn’t apply to Orel Hershiser or ...

Pioneer Press: Twins use international bonus money to acquire two minor-league prospects

The Twins were unable to make it to the final round in the competition for Shohei Ohtani, but they still found a way to capitalize on the mania surrounding the two-way Japanese sensation.

In separate trades announced Wednesday night, the Twins shipped $1 million of their remaining 2017-18 international bonus money to both the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels in exchange for promising 2017 June draftees.

Surprised more of the runners-up haven’t tried this.

Giants ‘impressed’ in meetings with Stanton…

Evans confirmed the Giants came to terms with the Marlins on a trade for Stanton that has contingencies, including the right fielder approving it. The Giants and Cardinals have been the most aggressive pursuers, though it’s believed Stanton, who has a full no-trade clause, is holding out for his hometown Dodgers to engage in serious talks.

No details on what would be going to the Marlins.
