Mariners reportedly made a strong push for Martin « Hot Stove

Not a vote of confidence for Mike Zunino.

According to a source, the Mariners, surprisingly, were among the finalists who pushed hard for Russell Martin, who eventually agreed to a five-year, $82 million contract with the Blue Jays on Monday.

Mets unveil new dimensions at Citi Field - Newsday

Still, the Mets believe the added benefit of a more homer-friendly environment is worthwhile, especially because their young arms have healthy strikeout and ground-ball rates that should keep them from being burned by the changes. The Mets calculated they would have hit 17 more homers last season with the new dimensions compared to 10 more for opposing hitters. Lefties would have been the biggest beneficiaries.

Baseball Prospectus | Baseball Therapy: Against the Grind

We know that over the course of a season, plate discipline erodes as hitters presumably get more tired. It’s hard to get enough sleep out on the road and after a while even a fun job becomes just another job. Well, if players lose plate discipline, they are probably bleeding away strikes, and that can have a significant effect on a team’s chances. Maybe there are some managers who are just better at handling the grind, and in minimizing the penalty to be paid for fatigue and boredom at the end ...

The family legal fight over Ryan Howard’s finances

It’s sad that stuff like this goes on.

In addition to his struggles on the field, Howard was engaged in a nasty legal fight with his family over control of his finances, a fight that included his twin brother and lifetime confidant suing him for more than $2.7 million - and Howard countersuing with allegations of fraud and mismanagement of the fortune that he had amassed.

Yankees likely won’t go to Max for Scherzer - NY Daily News

Despite recent buzz that the Bombers are considering a run at Max Scherzer, sources said the Yankees have not abandoned their plan to stay away from the top batch of free agents, looking instead at mid-level starting pitchers to bolster their rotation while continuing their search for a shortstop and third baseman.

The Daily News reported earlier this month that the Yankees did not plan to be players for the top free agents, and three weeks into the process, not much has changed.

Stanton’s megadeal makes perfect sense - Jayson Stark Blog - ESPN

I don’t believe the trade is crazy. It is extremely risky, especially for a franchise that has cried poor for years.

According to Lee Sinins’ Complete Baseball Encyclopedia, Stanton is the fifth player in history to hit 100 more home runs than the average player in his league before his age-25 season. The other four—Eddie Mathews, Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Mantle and Mel Ott—all went on to join the 500-Homer Club and end up in the Hall of Fame.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-19-2014

Pittsburgh Press, November 19, 1914:

William Neill, scout of the Phillies…is confident that the Phillies have landed in Dave Bancroft a man who should will the hole at shortstop.
...
“Bancroft looked mighty good to me,” said Scout Neill. “I watched him play in a dozen games. He has a wonderful pair of hands and is as quick as a flash…You can never tell what a young fellow will do when he comes up to the majors, but Bancroft certainly has the ear-marks of a man who will develop fast.”

Giancarlo Stanton’s $325M with Miami Marlins heavily backloaded - ESPN

Wow! In the short term Stanton is walking away from a lot of money. Don’t get me wrong. His option years make up for it if he goes in the tank. If he plays well, though, he’s leaving a bunch of money on the table.

If Giancarlo Stanton opts out of his new 13-year, $325 million contract with the Miami Marlins after the first six seasons, he’ll be walking away from a staggering $218 million over the final seven seasons, sources familiar with the deal told ESPN.com Tuesday.

However, one source ...

White Sox To Sign Zach Duke

The White Sox will announce the signing of left-handed reliever Zach Duke later today, reports Dan Hayes of CSNChicago.com (Twitter link)...

Duke quietly had a dominant season in the Brewers’ bullpen in 2014, pitching to an electric 2.45 ERA with 11.4 K/9, 2.6 BB/9 and a 57.7 percent ground-ball rate. Opposing lefties hit just .198/.267/.302 against Duke last year, though righties couldn’t figure him out either, mustering a mere .242/.288/.298 against the well-traveled lefty… With ...

Sports will also not wait seven years from approval to their Olympic first appearance, and instead could be brought in for just one Olympics to maximize the Games’ reach and attraction.

The first Games to benefit could be the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with organizers pushing for the inclusion of baseball and softball.

Giancarlo Stanton may actually prove to be worth reported $325M contract - MLB - SI.com

Jay Jaffe’s take on the Stanton deal. He estimates Stanton’s value of the contract based on the cost per win on the free agent market. I’m not a huge fan of the approach when players are extended. Teams don’t win championships by paying “market” rates for players, especially those still under control for two years. Using the market approach, teams would be making sound financial choices if they spent anything less than $284.2 million for a 95 win team in 2014. (95 wins = 47.6 base wins + 47.4 ...

Is Madison Bumgarner the World’s #1 Starting Pitcher?

The system is straightforward. When a starter makes his major league debut, he begins with 300 points. From there, his rating will go up when he pitches well (based on Game Score). His rating goes down when he pitches poorly or doesn’t pitch at all (including the offseason). Complete details of the system are available both in The Handbook and on Bill James Online.

Might Yanks revisit their low-key winter plan and shoot for Scherzer? - CBSSports.com

I bet Boras is the one pushing this report.

The Yankees and Scherzer’s agent, Scott Boras, are said to have had a brief contact sometime since returning from the GM meetings, and word is the Yankees may “revisit” their inclination not to make any big expenditures this winter.

Top performances, prospects from 2014 Fall League | MLB.com

This must be depressing for Angels fans.

Best Prospect: Kaleb Cowart has struggled the last two years in Double-A and his woes continued in Arizona, where he batted .185/.224/.259. He did make some nice plays and demonstrated a strong arm at third base.
