Where Have You Gone, Rance Mulliniks?

I wondered how unusual this was, to employ a platoon in 97 percent of a team’s games? Had any platoon ever finished at 100 percent? To help answer these questions, I asked Retrosheet’s Tom Ruane to provide me some data and (as usual) he came through. Because Retrosheet’s lineup data go back to 1908, my study covers 1908-2017, 100 seasons.

For the purposes of my study, I define a platoon as a two-person single-position job share in which a left-handed hitter starts against right-handed ...

Exiled by the Cubs, Sammy Sosa Is Enjoying the Life He Wants You to See

A bit late, I admit, but something that I think will be of interest in several regards.

Inside the cool, hushed second-floor lounge of Dubai’s grandest hotel, a waiter carefully prepares a shallow glass of 12-year Macallan. A familiar figure smiles, observing the meticulous way that his drink—nearly $100 for a double portion—is prepared. Three ice cubes, so symmetrical they could have been laser cut, gleam as they’re tongued into the scotch without a splash or even a clink.

He leans ...

Giants’ Buster Posey will miss All-Star Game with hip ailment

Giants catcher Buster Posey was selected to his sixth All-Star Game but will sit out with right hip inflammation, which has taken a toll on his swing and run production.

Posey will receive a cortisone shot in his hip after Sunday’s game and rest during the four-day All-Star break, manager Bruce Bochy said. The Giants’ first game after the break is in Oakland.

OTP 2018 July 9: Why It’s Hard to ‘Stick to Sports’

A quote attributed to the late U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren reads: “I always turn to the sports pages first, which records people’s accomplishments. The front page has nothing but man’s failures.”

But even in Warren’s lifetime, the sports page was full of things that moved outside the realm of sports accomplishments into the political world of page one: Jackie Robinson breaking the baseball color line, Muhammad Ali’s successful fight to overturn his criminal conviction for ...

Olney: Max Muncy’s journey from out of MLB to out of this world

Once they got their turn, usually in the early evening, Max Muncy would take about 200 swings—four buckets of baseballs, roughly 50 balls per bucket. Then Max would throw and catch and field a few grounders, trying to stay fresh in case somebody called to offer him a job in pro ball. But as each day passed in those first weeks of April 2017, Max chatted with his father about what else might be next. He was 26 years old, after all, and had been released by the Oakland Athletics at the end of ...

Mike Trout’s Major League debut gave us a quick glimpse of the legend to come

The Angels took Trout 25th overall in the 2009 Draft, and he spent the next two years tearing up the Minor Leagues and becoming one of the most highly-touted prospects in baseball. On July 8, just a game back of the Rangers in the AL West, the team decided to call in the cavalry, starting the 19-year-old in center field and batting him ninth.

And people have been trying to trade him for prospects ever since.

Does batting order matter in Major League Baseball? A simulation approach

Been a while since I’ve seen an article of this type: an academic with apparently zero familiarity with the rich history of sabermetrics attempts to answer a fundamental question that many others before him have already addressed, probably in better detail and with deeper understanding.

I’ve simulated baseball games where 9 batters make successful hits according to a pre-determined Batting Average (BA) and make singles (64% of all hits), doubles (20%), triples (2%), and home runs (14%) ...

Cubs Prospect Oscar De La Cruz Receives 80-Game Suspension

Cubs prospect Oscar De La Cruz has been hit with an eighty-game suspension, per a league announcement. He tested positive for the same banned masking agent/diuretic, furosemide, that led to the recent suspension of Robinson Cano.

Entering the season, De La Cruz was seen as a prospect to watch, with an intriguing combination of size, stuff, and command. MLB.com rated him third among Cubs farmhands, in fact, after seeing him turn in a dozen solid starts at the High-A level in 2017. Though he ...

Here’s what the 2018 All-Star teams should look like

“On Sunday, Major League Baseball will announce its All-Star teams, a combination of fan voting, player ballots and league picks. There will be questionable choices. There will be snubs. There will be 62 names, with two more to come from the Final Vote and even more via injury and pitching replacements. Those are the teams you’ll see July 17 in Washington, D.C.

These are the teams you should see.”

Matheny, Mozeliak and Fowler Need to Book a Guest Spot on Dr. Phil - 101Sports.com

So what would be the justification for benching Bader or Pham of keeping Martinez away from right field to accommodate Fowler?

Answer: There is no justification. Baseball always brings us surprises; the Cardinals may need to turn to Fowler when we least expect it. But you don’t play guys that are having hideous seasons based on past performance or size of contract. You go with the guys who will give you your best shot at winning. And the Cardinals must prioritize winning. They can’t be ...

Should the Nationals consider trading Harper?

Washington has lost 21 of 31 since May 31, a .323 winning percentage that’s better than only the Mets, Orioles and Royals in that time span. Maybe a question that sounds objectively crazy on its face actually isn’t: Should the Nationals, in the face of a tremendously disappointing season, trade the man who was expected to headline one of the best free-agent classes of all time this offseason?

The answer is clearly, “Not yet, obviously,” and not just because the Nationals certainly aren’t going ...

TY COBB ARGUES THAT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PLACE BASE HITS IN BASEBALL

...Cobb admits that it is impossible to place hits with any great agree of accuracy. “It might be,” the Peach admits, “if every ball delivered by the pitcher cut the plate at a certain pre-determined spot. In fact, when a batter gets one in his “groove” he is able to place it with pretty fair accuracy.

“But the wise pitcher is keeping the batter guessing—throwing him off his balance—keeping him ...

J.T. Ginn Not Signing with Dodgers

J.T. Ginn, the Dodgers’ first-round selection (30th overall) in last month’s MLB Draft, posted a message on Twitter on Thursday indicating he has decided not to sign with Los Angeles and instead will pursue collegiate baseball at Mississippi State University.

I don’t know how Dodger fans are reacting but until Turang signed a lot of Brewer fans sounded super ridiculous.  These guys are 18 years old and making a life altering decision.  Even a month may not be enough time. ...Read More...

Scott Boras says shifts are partly why Bryce Harper isn’t enjoying a typical Harper season

“Boras has strong opinions on many baseball matters, and during a 25-minute session with reporters Tuesday, he espoused a few about why his client Bryce Harper — slated to perhaps sign the richest contract in American professional sports history this coming winter — is not enjoying a typical Harper season.

Harper is batting .215 after he went 0 for 4 in the Nationals’ 3-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox, but Boras insisted evaluating Harper through batting average is misguided because he ...

City Journal: Bullets and Baseball on the Fourth of July

Some offbeat reading for the holiday…

At 30 minutes past noon, as the Dodgers took the field for batting practice, Doyle leaned forward in Seat 3 of Row C in Section 42 and started to say something to young Otto. But before he could speak, he lurched backward in his seat, stone dead.

At first, the ballpark cops suspected a heart attack. Then they noticed the hole in Doyle’s left temple. The game went on as Doyle was carried out of the stadium, though several members of the overflow crowd ...

Nationals Reportedly Interested In Matt Harvey, Raisel Iglesias

Harvey, 29, has undeniably raised his stock since joining the Reds in a trade nearly two months ago in a trade that sent Devin Mesoraco to New York. Through 53 2/3 innings out of the Cincinnati rotation, he’s worked to a 3.86 ERA with 6.7 K/9, 2.0 BB/9, 1.17 HR/9 and a 43 percent ground-ball rate. More encouraging than the bottom-line numbers is the fact that Harvey has steadily improved his velocity over the course of his tenure in Cincinnati; he’s averaged nearly 95 mph on his fastball ...
