“Bullshit has tremendous advantages over knowledge. Bullshit can be created as needed, on demand, without limit. Anything that happens, you can make up an explanation for why it happened.

“There was a Kansas football game a year ago; some Texas-based football team, much better than Kansas, came to Lawrence and struggled through the first quarter — KU with, like, a 7-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. The rest of the game, KU lost, like, 37-0, or something. The announcer had an ...

Angell: Giants Near Crown

These have been fun games, though. Watching Bumgarner, whose amazingly extended lefty delivery begins with the held ball detouring toward short center field, I decided that his great stuff is equalled by the calm and the air of mournful apology with which it’s delivered: Sorry, guys, but you’ve got no chance. It’s quiet when he’s pitching, with little to note beyond the flow of strikeouts or pop-ups or ground balls, delivered without gesture or a change of expression, and the click of ...

Frankovich: Keith Olbermann, Traditionalist

FYI: Nick was an editor at SABR back in the day.

So said Keith Olbermann. He too has taken to calling the World Series, disparagingly, “the MLB Finals.” Hard left in his politics, the ESPN2 commentator is, mirabile dictu, a hardcore traditionalist in matters baseball. I just came across this video from last Tuesday:

The Economist: Gone too soon (Oscar Taveras)

Don’t blame bad roads for Oscar Taveras’s death.  Lax enforcement of driving laws and a culture that celebrates speeding are at fault.

Less than 10% of tickets issued for vehicular infractions ever get paid, and the prevalence of drive-through liquor stores and alcohol sales at petrol stations expose drivers to constant temptation…

Cubs prospect C.J. Edwards dazzles early; Twins prospect Byron Buxton hurt late | MiLB.com

Buxton is hurt again.

Two notable players who fit that profile appeared in Monday’s 3-3 tie between Mesa and Salt River, with each experiencing starkly different outcomes. C.J. Edwards—the Cubs’ No. 5 prospect and No. 51 overall prospect—fired three perfect innings for Solar Sox, while the Rafters’ Byron Buxton—a Twins prospect ranked the best in baseball—sustained yet another injury.

Buxton was taken to a hospital after the game for X-rays on his left middle finger, which he hurt while diving ...

Bry: The decline of interest in baseball is a harbinger of waning American power

Dave Bry once compared Miles Davis’s “Kind of Blue” to Bob Seger’s “Turn the Page”. So there’s that.

Long considered the country’s “national pastime”, baseball reflects the very best qualities of the American spirit, the higher values upon which our society was (theoretically, at least) founded: freedom, independence, tolerance. Football is a violent, territorial sport that rewards brute strength over everything else and symbolises, at its base level, imperialism, bloodlust, and ...

Evan Longoria: A Bust and Not a Bust | FanGraphs Fantasy Baseball

Is batted ball distance available online anywhere?

Furthermore, Longoria chased pitches outside the zone like never before. His O-Swing% jumped above 30% for the first time, and he’s been below average at making contact with those types of pitches. That might explain what led to the higher SwStk%.

So Longoria got a little swing happy at pitches outside the strike zone. But what about his power? Well, his batted ball distance which had sat in the 287 to 294 foot range over the last four ...

Braves hire disciplined Seitzer as new hitting coach | braves.com

“In talking to him a few times, [Seitzer] came across as a guy who had a good plan,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “He’s organized and detailed. He’s worked with different kinds of hitters. He has his own mindset or skill, and that’s that he wants to keep the ball in the middle of the diamond. I think he was the perfect fit.”

Harrisburg Telegraph, October 28, 1914:

Fielder Jones, manager of the St. Louis Federal League club, has been given a big bank roll and told to “go after Walter Johnson,” star of the Washington American League club.

At the headquarters of the local Feds it was said to-day that if Jones can land the speed wonder, Catcher Ainsmith and Clyde Milan will also follow.

Johnson is wintering at his home in Coffeyville, Kan., and Fielder Jones will make every effort to land him. He left here with a wad ...

When drama of World Series intersects with drama of Oscar Taveras and real life, we are reminded it truly is just a game | FOX Sports

I love prospects, the excitement and mystery they generate, the potential for them to develop into superstars — or not.
Oscar Taveras was such a talent, the Cardinals’ best position prospect since Albert Pujols. He had a gorgeous finish to his left-handed swing. He hit a big home run in the NLCS.
And on Sunday night, in the middle of Game 5 of the World Series, we learned that he was gone.

Royals employees gifted a trip to World Series

Section 334: It is a tiny blue pie slice among 40,000 fans. But in games three, four and five of 2014 World Series, the faces of its 185 or so Kansas City occupants — both elated and glum, broadcast on national television — became the faces of Royals fandom in AT&T Park.

Nicole Bruce, 45, of Independence was seen on TV by her brother-in-law who was watching in Texas. Bob and Kathy Butler of Kansas City said their son and grandson back home saw them.

Throughout the ballpark, people could ...

Former Tigers pitcher Jeff Robinson, 52, dies

This sucks. Always liked him as a prospect. Never fully panned out but put together a really nice 1988 season for a good Tigers team that would have made the playoffs had they not collapsed.

Jeff Robinson, a promising pitching prospect in the early 1980s who went on to pitch in nearly 100 games for the Tigers, passed away Sunday afternoon after a seven-month battle with undisclosed health issues. He was 52.

Mike Henneman, Robinson’s roommate in the minors and major leagues, confirmed his ...
