Bochy not ready to announce Lincecum decision

Opening Day thru June 20: 15 GS, 82.7 IP, 4.90 ERA
June 25 (no-hitter) thru July 22: 5 GS, 38 IP, 0.95 ERA
July 25 thru August 23: 6 GS, 24.7 IP, 9.49 ERA

I have no idea what to make of this. (Or, for that matter, of Lincecum’s pic on his B-R page.)

Who will start [for the Giants] Thursday? “TBA.” [Manager Bruce] Bochy has talked to Dave Righetti and Brian Sabean, but he won’t announce anything until after he gets a chance to talk to Tim Lincecum…

[Yusmeiro] Petit is off-limits anyway ...

Report: The Braves and Cubs discussed a B.J. Upton, Edwin Jackson swap

Most importantly, Nightengale also says the deal “likely will be broached once again this winter. Stay tuned.”

In today’s column for USA TODAY, Bob Nightengale writes that the Braves and Cubs nearly pulled the trigger on a swap of B.J. Upton and Edwin Jackson at the non-waiver trade deadline, but it never materialized. The Braves would have had to throw in a significant amount of cash to even out the trade, which was ostensibly what halted the deal.

Upton is in the second year of a five-year, ...

Even as his value rises, Royals’ Alex Gordon says he’ll delay free-agency

His agent has redirected all his bookmarks to FanGraphs…

[Alex Gordon] can become a free agent after next season, as long as he declines his $13.25 million player option for 2016… Gordon indicated he plans on picking up his 2016 option and delaying his free-agency…

The Star polled a group of big-league executives and talent evaluators to measure Gordon’s value. The consensus was he could command a five-year deal after 2015 worth somewhere between $75 million and $95 million…

Gordon himself ...

Sherman: Mets’ key offseason decision will be what to do with Murphy

Perhaps this other article "Dodgers walk Murphy to face Wright" might offer some clues…

indications are the Mets are not showing much enthusiasm to have [Daniel] Murphy join David Wright and Curtis Granderson as the long-term foundational pieces of the lineup, in part, because the deals for Wright and Granderson look as if they could go rather bad.

For better or worse, this is a front office that believes in drawing walks and hitting homers, areas Murphy does not excel. Murphy’s defense at ...

Athletics Acquire Geovany Soto

TIL Geovany Soto has played okay at times in the past six years.

The Athletics have acquired catcher Geovany Soto from the Rangers, Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish tweets, confirming a tweet from Mark Madson. The Rangers will receive cash considerations for Soto, Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan tweets... Soto is making $3.05MM and will be a free agent this winter.

Madden: After coming up aces at trade deadline, Athletics and Tigers look lost at the plate

RBI’s! Fraternization! Smith Wigglesworth’s Plumbers Guide to God! More new old world speak from Bill Madden!

Whereas the Tigers’ decline in offense can be directly traced to injury-riddled Miguel Cabrera’s power outage — three homers since July 1, and just one with eight RBI in August — and the return to earth of J.D. Martinez, who’s dropped 42 points off his batting average since July 13 and has just 10 RBI (three of them in one game) in August, there also seems little doubt the ...

David Justice Says Put Barry Bonds in Baseball Hall of Fame Despite Steroid Use Late In Career

Hail Barry!

Barry Bonds is one of the players whose careers and reputations have been destroyed by Roidgate. One of the greatest baseball players of all-time, Bonds will likely never be allowed into the Hall of Fame because of his alleged use of steroids. But David Justice, one of the Atlanta Braves’ most celebrated players of all time, says that Bonds should be let in at least on the strength of his pre-juicing days. The former power hitter says that he made it on his own merits for much of ...

Embarrassing loss, surging Royals add importance to doubleheader for Detroit Tigers

The Twins should be punished for cruelty to animals for what they did Friday night.

The Tigers pitched poorly and made multiple defensive gaffes Friday night in a 20-6 loss to the Minnesota Twins.

The Tigers used eight pitchers—well, seven pitchers plus shortstop Andrew Romine—in the loss. The Tigers were charged with two errors and made at least that many additional bad defensive plays. Romine gave up more than 820 feet worth of home runs to consecutive batters.

The Tigers rallied from a ...

MGL: Which teams are optimizing their lineups?

New order: Everyone everywhere.

Let’s recap the mistakes that managers typically make in constructing what they think are the best possible lineups. Again, we will ignore player preferences and other “psychological factors” not because they are unimportant, but because we don’t know know when a manager might slot a player in a position that even he doesn’t think is optimal in deference to that player. The fact that managers constantly monkey with lineups anyway suggests that player ...

Manny Machado Likely Out For Season

Pearce leads the team in WAR, have we mentioned that?

Orioles third baseman Manny Machado is likely out for the rest of the season, Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports tweets. He will have knee surgery at some point within the next week…

Machado’s absence will be tough for the Orioles, who currently are 73-53 and atop the AL East. Machado has hit .278/.324/.431 this season, and as usual has contributed plenty of value with his defense… The Orioles could respond by moving Chris Davis to third base and ...

Look at your team. Now back at me. Your players are now injured.

How difficult has social media made it to keep trade or signing negotiations private? Has this impacted your approach to these things?

You identified one of our biggest challenges. This has impacted us unfortunately quite negatively. Used to be that we could tell all the players involved in trades before it became public. Now, that is extremely difficult to do. Last year, Ian Kinsler found out through the media that he had been ...

Brisbee: Rusney Castillo reminds us how screwed amateur players can be

The Cuban guys do almost always have better names. “Rusney” is pretty good, although the “Castillo” is uninspiring. Stuff like “Erisbel Arruebarrena” and “Odrisamer Despaigne” is just incredible.

[Rusney] Castillo got just over nine times the largest bonus ever handed out in the draft, the $8 million Gerrit Cole received from the Pirates. That’s partially because the Red Sox are expecting Castillo to help the 2015 team, which makes this something of an apples/oranges comparison, but he’s getting ...

Pete Rose’s Reckless Gamble

I have taught a variety of sports law courses in the past seven years. Every semester, when my lecture turns to sports gambling, I get some form of this question:

“But what about Pete Rose? He only bet on his team to win. What’s wrong with that?”

The gist of my response: A lot is wrong with that.

FG: Ben Revere and the Emptiest Batting Average Ever

Commenters point out that, if Revere’s current stats hold up, he will join only two other post-1900 players with lower wOBA than BA, and 49 others with a 2.1% or lower walk rate.

To look for players to compare to [Ben] Revere historically, I looked for other player seasons… which had enough plate appearances to qualify for the batting title with a batting average at least as high as Revere’s but a walk rate and isolated slugging (slugging minus batting average) below his… In fact, since 1900 ...

DRays Bay: Rays to Montreal? “Smart chronicler” says yes

Pre-game conversation with a smart chronicler of the Rays, who believes team is finished in this market and eventually headed to Montreal.

— Lynn G. Henning (@Lynn_Henning) August 20, 2014

As I have said before, and in direct disagreement with Henning, the Rays do not have a weak market as they face almost no competition for baseball, with excellent television ratings. Baseball is a television sport.

A far more likely team to move would be the Oakland Athletics, who have a far worse stadium ...

BA (Badler): Seven Reasons Why MLB’s New International Rules Are Backward

Major League Baseball’s new rules… restrict [international] players from going to a team’s academy until either they turn 16 or until six months before they’re eligible (whichever comes first), and counts any visit to a team facility as one of the 30 days the player is allowed to be at the academy, regardless of whether the player stays there overnight.

The motivation behind the changes, it seems, is MLB’s desire to cut back on the extreme early agreements for players who can sign on ...

Boswell, WaPo: For streaking Washington Nationals, runs like this don’t come around very often

Long winning streaks are part of the fabric and lore of baseball. They just aren’t part of the fabric and lore of D.C. As a kid, I became a Senators fan in third grade. I was a sophomore in high school, more than seven seasons and 1,100 games later, before I saw my first winning streak of more than five games.

We heard that other towns had streaks that stretched for weeks, not days. The 1916 New York Giants won 26 in a row, though with a tie game stuck there. The Cubs once won 21 in a row. ...

A Look Inside Baseball’s Ever-Evolving Stimulant Culture | Bleacher Report

Large quantities of potential energy are consumed, often on top of other medications, in tandem with steady alcohol consumption. The end result is guys crushing energy drinks all throughout the day, just to feel “normal.” Then the same after the game with alcohol.

One has to wonder if doing greenies wasn’t simply a more efficient and effective way of satisfying a behavior that never actually left but, just like energy, simply changed form.

By this point, you have made up your own mind, as so many of us have. You are from one of two camps. One is the “hasn’t Pete suffered enough?” one. The other is the “Pete got exactly what he deserved” one.

I occupy the former.
