Fangraphs: Red Sox Hire Dave Dombrowski

And now, two weeks later, Dombrowski has landed a new position, taking the title of President of Baseball Operations with the Red Sox. As part of the transition, GM Ben Cherington will be leaving the organization, and Bob Nightengale reports that former Braves GM Frank Wren is the most likely candidate to replace Cherington. Wren was ousted in Atlanta in part because the team had fallen behind the curve analytically, so a Dombrowski/Wren combination would make for one of the more old-school ...

Cooperstown Chances: Is Trevor Hoffman a Hall of Famer? | MLB | Sporting News

Statistically, neither Hoffman nor Smith come anywhere close to Rivera, who Buster Olney suggested ought be the first unanimous selection to Cooperstown. Rivera’s 652 saves and lifetime 205 ERA+ are best in baseball history and his 56.6 WAR is also tops among closers (though not that far beyond Wilhelm’s 50.1 WAR). Rivera’s in a class all his own as a closer. If he’s Willie Mays, Hoffman is Duke Snider.

Then again, Hoffman and Smith have better numbers than at least one closer already in ...

Passan: Divisions in baseball need to be benched

Imagine a world with no divisions….it’s easy if you try….

Were the postseason to begin today, the National League’s second- and third-best teams would play each other in a single winner-takes-all game for the honor of going on the road and playing a series against the best team in baseball. In the meantime, the teams with the fourth- and fifth-best records in the league would face off for a ticket to the NLCS.

If this seems screwed up, it’s because it is. The wild card opened up a world ...

Protest Upheld Over Fixed Game At Little League Softball World Series

Say it ain’t so, Snohomish:

A team from Central Iowa will get a second chance to advance past pool play at the Little League Softball World Series in Portland, Oregon, after officials determined Monday that a team from Snohomish, Washington, rested its stars and lost on purpose to avoid a rematch in the semifinals.

Central Iowa, which finished 3-1 in pool play, could have advanced to the semifinals if the Washington team either scored just three runs vs. the U.S. Southeast representative from ...

SBNation: 9% of Canada watched Troy Tulowitzki’s 12-pitch battle with Andrew Miller

Some staggering stats have been sent by Sportsnet since the Blue Jays’ huge trade-deadline moves, but nothing as mind-boggling as this: 3.14 million people tuned in on Sportsnet’s broadcast of the game against the Yankees at 10:19 pm on Friday, when Troy Tulowitzki was engaged in a 12-pitch battle against Andrew Miller.

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, August 18, 1915:

John B. Foster, secretary of the New York Nationals, announced…his club would protest the first game won by Pittsburgh [yesterday] on the grounds that Rube Benton, who pitched for Pittsburgh, is legally the property of the Giants. The New York club claimed Benton last Saturday after Cincinnati had sold him to Pittsburgh. Manager McGraw of the Giants said he had an option on Benton which had not expired when the player was sold.

...and McGraw was ...

Yankees starter Bryan Mitchell struck in head by line drive, has nasal fracture

Always a scary moment.

The Yankees later announced that Mitchell was taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital, where he was diagnosed with a small nasal fracture. Team doctors would monitor him for concussion symptoms, but he was released from the hospital and returned to Yankee Stadium as his club beat the Twins 8-7 in 10 innings.

“I talked to him, and he said he’s feeling fine,” said reliever Caleb Cotham, who entered the game for Mitchell in the second inning. “He’s here, somewhere. ...

The Apprenticeship of Connie Mack – The Hardball Times

I have to wonder how the six-year-olds today look at Mack’s statue when they attend Phillies games. Here stands a man born during the Civil War, whose playing career spanned the Gilded Age and the Gay ’90s, and whose managerial career started in 1894 and carried through the first half of the 20th century. Still, it’s been more than six decades since the A’s left for Kansas City, so small fry today would likely be unimpressed by the statute of the gaunt old man waving his scorecard. I ...

MLB, Fox break impasse in streaming talks - local streaming to come

Welcome to the 21st century.

Several industry sources said the league is drafting deal documents with Fox, which holds the local media rights to 15 MLB teams. An agreement to offer authenticated local streaming of live games is expected to be in place by the start of the 2016 season.

It was a significant shift in MLB’s negotiating position that led to the breakthrough with Fox, which has been in active negotiations with the league for several years over the streaming service. The Toronto ...

Cardinals induct four into Cardinal Hall Of Fame

From a historical standpoint, Simmons said there were really only four franchises _ Brooklyn/Los Angeles, New York/San Francisco Giants, the New York Yankees and the Cardinals.

“They’ve got all the Hall of Famers and all the pennants. Those four places are huge,” Simmons.

“When one of them, in this case, the Cardinals, embraces you, brings you forward and lifts you up, along with their fan base, which says, ‘We really think there’s something special about you’. . . it was a little surprising ...

Kyle Schwarber avoids beer can, delivers big hit for Chicago Cubs - Chicago Cubs Blog - ESPN

Somebody picked a weird time to give up drinking.

Schwarber got a taste—almost literally—of the Cubs/Sox rivalry when a fan threw a beer can at him during the Cubs’ 6-3 win on Saturday, their ninth consecutive victory.

“A tallboy,” Schwarber said, laughing afterwards. “And it wasn’t even drunk all the way.
