LAT: A closer look at Rich Hill and his blisters

The blisters a pitcher gets are much more painful. They start deep below the surface of the skin, usually between the nail bed and the skin surrounding it. It will begin to radiate heat as the area (further below the surface of the skin than blisters we get) fills with fluid. Continue to pitch and the fluid erupts to the surface, taking a lot of skin with it and causing a lot of bleeding. So the pitcher is left with a hole in his skin next to his nail, and the hole exudes pus and blood.

Jack White Wrote a Song for His Baseball Bat Company That’s Also Walkup Music for MLB’s Ian Kinsler

Wait. What?

The rocker cameos in a new ad for Warstic, the slugger company he co-owns with Detroit Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler.

White, a Detroit native, scored the ad with a new track, “Battle Cry,” that dropped last week. Kinsler, the star of the ad, grapples with his demons as White, playing “a shadowy trickster,” lurks in the background, doing his usual Addams Family vibe.

The 20 Greatest Phillies

How did Pete Alexander dominate the Yankees in the 1926 World Series when he was with the Cardinals despite being drunk? The answer to that question dispels a myth and reveals the different circumstances of professional baseball at the time. Quite simply, Alexander was not drunk when he entered Game Seven of the ‘26 Series in relief.

On Billy Hamilton: The athlete who’s the first to do something well usually seems remarkable. If they do it well enough, they can be startling to the senses. Babe ...

Fangraphs: Let’s Watch Felix Hernandez and Mike Trout Face Off Forever

This is where it stopped being about Mariners vs. Angels, and started being about two elite baseball players showing off. Trout was having some sort of exchange with Zunino, Zunino presumably telling him, “hey, quit it.” It’s funny. It’s funny to be amazing.

Commissioner starts to press Cleveland Indians about their logo

Among those who think it is time for the club to decisively move away from the logo is the Major League Baseball commissioner, Rob Manfred, who in continuing discussions with the team’s ownership is beginning to apply a little bit of pressure on the club to come up with a plan of action.

In a statement to The New York Times, Pat Courtney, a spokesman for Major League Baseball, said Manfred, in his talks with the Indians’ owners, had made clear his “desire to transition away from the ...

MN Twins, Byron Buxton’s struggles mount in Detroit Tigers loss

He needs the day off to get his head in a better place.

“It’s all about trusting the process,” Dozier said of Buxton. “He’s learning that. We all have gone through it. If the stats aren’t there in September, then we’ll talk.”

There Is No Stopping Daniel Murphy [FG]

Since Fangraphs articles seem work in opposites, this must mean that Nationals fans should be very afraid of Murphy suddenly tanking now that this has been published.

You could be forgiven, heading into last season, for thinking that Daniel Murphy would fail to carry over the magic of his 2015 playoff performance into the 2016 campaign. Many teams seem to have had similar suspicions: a free agent, Murphy received just $37.5 million over three years to sign with Washington. The Nationals were ...

Angels rally for another late victory

In the aftermath of the Angels’ previous mind-boggling comeback victory, Cliff Pennington suggested that it could carry over. The next time they’re a few downs run, he said, they’ll be confident they can win.
His theory was proven correct in the very next game.

The Angels scored three runs in the ninth and the winner on Carlos Perez’s safety squeeze in the 10th, beating the Texas Rangers, 6-5, on Tuesday night at Angel Stadium.

On the heels of Sunday’s seven-run rally to win in the ...

Michael Brantley wins home opener with double | MLB.com

“I don’t know if you can write it up any better,” Brantley said. “I guess if you hit a home run, but we got a win. That’s all that matters. A lot of hard work went into this offseason. A lot of time away from my kids and my family.”

Why the Rays’ Mallex Smith is headed to the minors | Tampa Bay Times

Smith, personable and charismatic as well, isn’t basking in what he has done, the 4-for-19 at the plate (.211) offsetting the hustle on the field and basepaths (3-for-3 in steals) in Mallex-facturing runs. “A good first week,” he said. “But there’s a lot of things I could do better.”

He’s determined to prove he is more than just fast, that “being talked about as a one-dimensional guy kinda irks me.” And he is sharp enough to know there isn’t much he can do to extend his stay but keep playing ...

Will New York Yankees’ Jean Afterman be baseball’s first female GM? The sport should be so lucky

“####### it,” The Boss exploded. “I can’t believe [Irabu] guy. I’m going to stick him on the next plane right back to you.”

Afterman listened as the knockdown pitch sailed up and in. She never tolerates being spoken to disrespectfully—even by someone as legendary as The Boss.

“Seriously, great!” Afterman countered, raising Steinbrenner’s ante. “I’m going to be at the f—-ing airport. You send him back with his f—-ing signing-bonus check and we’ll go right to the bank and we’ll cash it.

Is the World Baseball Classic Injury Effect Real? – The Ringer

Would Smyly be hurt if he hadn’t played in the WBC? That’s an open question. If I were a GM of a team, I wouldn’t want my pitchers in the WBC because I’d expect my training staff to know my players better which *should mean* they’d be in a better position to have my players better prepared to open the season healthy.

It’s understandable that team officials would “remain wary of the WBC,” as Rosenthal wrote. Teams have many millions of dollars tied up in their players’ well-being and the ...

Baseball Team Values 2017

. The average MLB team is worth $1.54 billion, 19% more than one year ago (to see the impact on the Forbes SportsMoney Index, click here). Values were driven higher by new local television deals that are increasing at roughly a two-fold rate, surging profitability, and the escalating value of Major League Baseball Advanced Media, the Internet and technology arm of MLB.

While over the past few years most of the new local television deals involved big market teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, ...

Pittsburgh Press, April 11, 1917:

It is hardly conceivable that the Pirates can prove disappointments this season. Very few persons are optimistic enough to concede them a chance to make a good showing in the National league race, which opens today. It’s a cinch that they can’t land lower than eighth at the finish and if they go higher than eight, they will apparently prove a big surprise to many critics and rival players. Just listen to this from the Cincinnati Enquirer: “The Cleveland Indians ...

Ron Cook: Hurdle deserves extension despite the odds | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

How about reading it from the greatest manager in Pirates history?

“Clint Hurdle has gotten a lot of credit for becoming a Pittsburgher, and rightfully so,” Jim Leyland said earlier this month. “He’s gotten a lot of credit for being a motivator, and rightfully so. But Clint Hurdle has not gotten enough credit in Pittsburgh, in my opinion, for being the game manager that he is. He is a terrific game manager. I don’t think that has been recognized because the other stuff has kind of ...

This is the elusive peek at a Michael Pineda who doesn’t blink | New York Post

The Yankees, considering so many question marks in the rotation, would be hard-pressed to even make a strong run at the playoffs without excellence from the 28-year-old righty, whose motivations can hardly be stronger since he can be a free agent after the season.

Romine said he believes this performance will “help” Pineda when everything is not working quite as ideally as it did in the home opener, serving as a reminder to trust three pitches and his skills.

But as glorious as Pineda was ...
