red sox - Seventy-one pages that helped define Dave Dombrowski - WEEI | Rob Bradford

Who wouldn’t like college work spread throughout the Internet almost 40 years later?

“This answer is not known at this time, but it appears that baseball is moving head-on toward the answer. If tickets reach a price level of ten dollars per person, it will cost a family of four at least fifty dollars to attend a game, which would seem to push the game out of the price level of the average family. Attending a game would become a novelty, and the average fan who is the true supporter of the team ...

Jonny Gomes headed to Royals in trade from Braves

The Royals have added one last piece for their playoff run, acquiring Braves outfielder Jonny Gomes in a trade just before the waiver trade deadline Monday night.

Fox Sports first reported the Royals’ acquisition of Gomes, who was hitting .223 for Atlanta, but with an .878 on-base plus slugging percentage against southpaws.

The Royals also acquired cash from Atlanta in the deal and traded minor-league infielder Luis Valenzuela, 22, who was hitting .339 in 47 games for Class A Lexington in ...

Schoenfield: Williams’ time running short with Nationals after loss - SweetSpot - ESPN

Matt Williams time in D.C. might not last longer than the rest of the season.

There’s a time to recognize that baseball is a long, six-month grind and as a manager you have to be aware not to burn out your bullpen. Then there’s a time to play with a little more urgency. That time is now for the Washington Nationals.

Somebody wake up Matt Williams and tell him.

ARod, team player.

“I am going to ask [Rodriguez] to take some groundballs, to see if he would be comfortable,” Girardi said before the game. “We have a lefty on Wednesday, and I am not sure what I will do.”

Both A-Rod and Brian Cashman are not sure, too. They’re not sure this is a good idea.

“Risk-reward, spring training is one thing,” said A-Rod, who went 1-for-4 with a walk in his first start since Wednesday. “Even earlier in the season, April, May you can do a ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-1-2015

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, September 1, 1915:

GIANTS FAIL TO GET HIT OFF LAVENDER

James Lavender pitched a no-hit game for the [Cubs] in the first contest [of a doubleheader], only two men reaching base. Merkle was safe on Fisher’s fumble in the second inning, and the same player received a base on balls in the eighth. Williams saved Lavender’s perfect game in the seventh inning when he made a sensational running catch on Doyle.

It’s interesting that “perfect game” meant something different in ...

OTP - September 2015: Making Sense Of The Republican Presidential Race: It’s Like Major League Baseball In August

For starters, you have to know what you are trying to “make happen” at this stage of the season.  No team is trying to win the World Series in August; instead the goal is to get in position to be one of the 10 (of 30) teams to make the playoffs where, as they say, anything can happen.  Likewise, 17 Republicans are not trying to be the final party nominee this early, they’re just trying to be one of the 3-5 candidates left standing next summer.  As in baseball, that’s really about ...

Shapiro comes to Blue Jays as well-loved individual - Sportsnet.ca

Shapiro spoke at a SABR convention in Cleveland. I remember being impressed.

“We don’t have enough time,” Francona said. “This guy is a combination of intelligent probably bordering on … he’s that smart. But he takes that intelligence and he’s very driven and organized. And you take it with the people skills … a pretty nice combination.”

Francona describes Shapiro as a dynamic speaker with the ability to make any topic interesting — even the typically tedious organizational ...

Miller’s Hard-Luck Streak Reaches 19 Starts Without a Win - The New York Times

I wonder which book he’s reading.

“Honestly I don’t know where all those stats sit,” Miller said. “I’m reading a book (pitching coach) Roger (McDowell) gave me. It’s all about how stats and all that stuff (don’t) really reflect on how you perform. You can make a good pitch and give up a hit. You want to be the best you can be, but it’s all about going out there and competing. The stats are a benefit on the side.”

Angels seek quick resolution for GM opening - The Orange County Register

Why not just let Mike Scioscia pick the new GM?

Of the external candidates who have been interviewed so far, none has been a major league general manager before, the source said. The Angels are planning to speak to at least some candidates with experience in that position, according to a source.

The Angels will not keep interim general manager Bill Stoneman in that position beyond this season.

Appellate court sides with MLB in minimum wage lawsuit

The district court granted MLB an initial victory in the Chen case last year, determining that FanFest was not subject to the FLSA and therefore was immune from the federal minimum wage and overtime requirements. Now, in a recent decision issued earlier this month, MLB has scored yet another victory with the Second Circuit Court of Appeals affirming the trial court’s finding that the FLSA does not apply to FanFest.

However, while the Chen decision certainly represents an important decision ...

Peter Gammons: Sea of possibilities for Dombrowski in Boston - GammonsDaily.com

Gammons on the Sox.

“Complexities and angles of first base”? The Red Sox don’t need him to be a Gold Glover at first. They will need him to be passable until Ortiz retires.

It isn’t as easy task for Dombrowski to decide about Ramirez. Can and will he do a Butterfield boot camp? Can he wrap his head around all the complexities and angles of first base? If not, can he be moved if the Red Sox pay the freight? Or, because he is an elite hitter whose career OPS+ and offensive WAR puts him in the ...

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, August 31, 1915:

A freak home run drive by [Possum] Whitted with one man out in the tenth inning gave Philadelphia a victory over St. Louis [yesterday] 4 to 3. Whitted’s drive struck the bleacher wall, bounded against [Bob] Bescher’s chest and caromed into the stand.

What’s wrong with the Nationals? It’s the starting pitching, stupid. - The Washington Post

Overall the starting pitchers are 10th in runs allowed per game. The offense is 13th in runs scored per game. Overall the team in 13th in winning percentage. Now I get that the expectations were higher for the starters. Of course, so was the expectations for the offense. So, I’d say the Nationals disappointing season is a team effort.

The Indians want a new minority owner — but the price isn’t right | New York Post

Mark Shapiro’s exit might not be coincidental.

Dolan, who is under fire from fans for one of the smallest payrolls in the big leagues, hired boutique investment bank Allen & Co. several months ago to shop roughly 30 percent of the team, The Post learned.

He doesn’t have deep enough pockets and is looking to a new investor to ramp up spending on salaries, sources said. The club’s payroll of $76 million ranks 26th among Major League Baseball’s 30 teams.

So far, Dolan, who is the cousin of ...

While trying to throw off a mound at the Giants’ complex in Arizona last week, Lincecum’s hips locked up again.

Blue Jays to name Mark Shapiro club president, replacing Beeston - CBSSports.com

Mark Shapiro, the Indians’ team president, will be named Toronto Blue Jays president, sources close to that team said.

The announcement is expected to come as early as this week, perhaps Monday.

Shapiro will replace Paul Beeston, the longtime Jays president who is retiring. Beeston is expected to remain through the year in Toronto, and Shapiro may not start in Toronto until next season, though the exact starting date isn’t known.
