Cubs promote 2015 No. 1 pick Ian Happ

The Cubs promoted 2015 No. 1 pick Ian Happ for Saturday’s game against the Cardinals in the wake of various ailments to several players.
...
“His spring training was fabulous,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “He got off to a good start at Triple-A. We needed him. He’s here.

“How long is he going to stay? I have no idea. It could be short. It could be longer than that. I don’t know.”
...
“We love the way he plays second base, but we want to get him reps all over the place, and I think ...

Angels’ Garrett Richards hoping for a return in August

Team doctors made Richards aware of two cases similar to his. In 2004, right-hander Brad Penny felt biceps nerve irritation shortly after the Dodgers acquired him at the trade deadline and effectively missed two months. That same year, St. Louis right-hander Chris Carpenter missed the season’s last two weeks and the Cardinals’ World Series run with the same condition.

“What I’ve been told is theirs were worse than mine,” Richards said. “So, if it took them all offseason to get back ...

Jeter-Bush Have Cash-Raising Woes for Marlins Bid, Giving Romney Leg Up

Doug Hanks @doug_hanks
Untold story behind this: Bush people really don’t like the Romney people. Blame them for bad press.

But what might look good in theory is proving to be a difficult sale with potential investors, as many have declined an invitation to become silent partners of the Jeter-Bush team. Both Jeter and Bush are wealthy, but they are far from billionaires, and are planning to invest just $50 million combined, while raising money from outside investors, people with direct ...

Former All-Star Doug DeCinces was convicted Friday of insider trading for a stock buy that earned him more than $1 million.

The ex-Baltimore Orioles and Angels third baseman was convicted of 14 federal charges. According to the Orange County Register, each count potentially carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.

Jim Callis mock projection 2017 MLB Draft | MLB.com

1. Twins: Brendan McKay, 1B/LHP, Louisville
Minnesota narrowed its field of contenders to the five players named above, plus Virginia first baseman Pavin Smith and Texas high school right-hander Shane Baz. Most clubs expect the Twins to take McKay, the best two-way prospect in more than four decades, rather than make Greene the first prep righty selected No. 1 overall. Whether they’ll take McKay as a first baseman or lefty starter, or even let him try to do both for a while, is unclear.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 5-12-2017

Chicago Eagle, May 12, 1917:

Hub Perdue of Gallatin, Ky., a veteran of the majors, now pitching with the Louisville club of the American association, believes he has the regular definition of a “gink.” “A gink,” Hub said, in his Southern drawl, “is a fellah with mud on his boots the yeah ‘round who lives so fah back in the woods that the owls sleep with his chickens, and he uses a ‘possum for a watchdog.”

I don’t use the word “gink” often enough.

Anyway, Hub was a fun player, one of the early ...

David Ortiz Calls Out Bobby Valentine In New Book: “Aggravating As Hell, Arrogant And Disrespectful

As excerpted by Sports Illustrated this week, Ortiz’s book describes Valentine as unreasonable and impossible to communicate with:

The drama began almost immediately in spring training. I remember fighting the thought, very early, We’re going to have an absolutely terrible year.

It was all about him in the spring. It was as if he wanted to prove how smart he was by running us through all these drills he’d used while managing in Japan, drills we had never done before. Bobby was in his ...

Fantasy Life: An Interview with Tabitha Soren

In 2003, Tabitha Soren went to the Oakland A’s spring training in Phoenix with her husband, Michael Lewis, who had just finished writing a book about the Oakland A’s front office, Moneyball, which would be published later that year. Soren brought her camera; she wasn’t a baseball fan, and she thought she would be bored. “I thought it was going to be a pretty place to shoot,” she told me when we spoke over the phone. She didn’t expect that project she began there would take her ...

Jeurys Familia Diagnosed With Arterial Clot In Shoulder

Mets closer Jeurys Familia has been diagnosed with an “arterial clot” in his right shoulder, per a club announcement. He’ll head for a visit with Dr. Robert Thompson, with a surgical option considered possible.

Obviously, we don’t yet know whether surgery is likely. But it seems squarely on the table given that the team noted that possibility in the announcement — a rather unusual step when the treatment course has yet to be finalized.

The Shelby Miller trade that almost was

Some Arizona Diamondbacks people thought they nearly had Shelby Miller traded last year, and it was potentially a deal that would have bailed them at least partly out of one of the most-criticized trades of the last decade.

Sources say the old regime was in serious talks on a deal that would have sent Miller to the Marlins last summer for multiple young pitchers, with Luis Castillo and Jose Urena main pieces, and Dillon Peters and Austin Brice also believed to have been discussed. Some recall ...

Derek Jeter: Thank You, New York

Jeter is going to send the whole city a fruit basket.

New York, I want to tell you a story — about a kid who grew up in the Midwest, in a town called Kalamazoo. Quiet, unsure and at times a little intimidated. A homebody at heart. About a kid with a dream who moved to a big city — to the big city. A kid who was just trying to keep up with everyone else.

A lot was asked of that kid. And I always respected the challenge to prove myself each and every day. The lights were always bright. The ...

“Big Bill” Lange, old-time Cub player, is ready to play ball to fill a vacancy for a man called to the front…he declared to-day in a letter to John K. Tener, president of the National League.

“When the army drafts all your players,” he wrote, “the chances are you will have to get some players that are 45 and over, so if you do, I will volunteer my services, as I will be 46 on June 6.”

“Sure, I’d listen if a major league ballclub called.”

Lange was a terrific ...

Indians Owner Says Chief Wahoo Issue Will Be Over ‘Within A Couple Of Years’

Because they’re moving to Miami?

Indians owner Paul Dolan spoke recently at an event at a Cleveland-area temple and covered a number of topics related to the club’s 2017 season, including ace Corey Kluber’s injury and how the team has changed under manager Terry Francona. But what really grabbed people’s attention was Dolan’s explanation of what will happen to the Chief Wahoo logo. “Some want to keep (Wahoo), some want to get rid of him, but the issue is not going to go,” Dolan ...

Oakland Magazine: The A’s Have Narrowed Their Ballpark Choices to Two

The Oakland A’s are now focusing on two sites in the city for a new ballpark: Laney College near Lake Merritt and Howard Terminal on the waterfront next to Jack London Square, according to four knowledgeable sources. Two of those sources say the Laney College property has edged into the lead as the team’s preferred spot. The A’s now view the Oakland Coliseum site as a distant-third choice.

MLB investigating Dodgers for alleged discrimination in termination of war veteran Nick Francona

Major League Baseball is investigating whether the Los Angeles Dodgers discriminated against Nick Francona, an Afghanistan war veteran and son of Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona, when his contract was terminated last year, sources familiar with the matter told Yahoo Sports.

Francona, 31, told MLB in a letter he believed the Dodgers gradually pushed him out of his job as assistant director of player development following his decision to seek an assessment at Home Base, a Boston-area ...

City Councilman Introduces Bill To Force the Mets and Yankees to Extend Protective Netting

Back in 2015, in the wake of some high profile instances of batted balls and broken bats injuring fans in the stands, Major League Baseball issued some recommendations — not requirements, mere recommendations — to clubs to extend protective netting. Most have done so to some degree and others are planning on doing so. The lack of a requirement has caused this effort to proceed in fits and starts, however.

In New York, someone is trying to impose some uniformity. A city councilman. From the ...
