The Process Report » Evan Longoria’s Contract

To calculate present value you need to discount future dollars. To do this we need the player’s salary, the number of years and an interest rate. After some discussion in the previously linked thread I have decided to use 5.3% for the discount rate due. Some legwork showed that his is a reasonable figure due to a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 5.3% for the fifty highest paid players between 2000 and 2015 using the USA Today Salary Database. I’m also estimating that a dollar per win on the ...

The plan appears simple enough: The Miami Marlins this week will ask Dan Jennings to step down as manager and resume his role as GM, according to major-league sources. | FOX Sports

Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reported Tuesday night that the team plans, “sweeping changes to its baseball operation, from player development and scouting, all the way up to the front office.” Spencer wrote that Jennings could return to the front office, but not necessarily as GM.

How to fix an MLB rule so stupid even the NFL doesn’t mess it up | New York Post

September roster expansion has been the norm forever. I can understand the reasoning by people who oppose but I think they should just keep it as it is. Sherman’s new idea is not an improvement. It will just lead to greater specialization for more of the season.

I think the sport should do something radical: You can use anyone in your system to play anytime from Game 1 to Game 162, you just have to announce your 25-man roster six hours before first pitch.

The Secrets of Baseball Management | FOX Sports

Earl Weaver took over the managing job after spending years in the Orioles farm system. If you read his books, he was most proud of his ability to evaluate players. This helps explain his level of comfort making some of the moves that he did.

Rob: Reading about the moves Earl Weaver made, immediately upon taking over as manager of the Orioles—making Don Buford an every-day player and using Elrod Hendricks more often—led me to wonder, how many times have new managers made big decisions that paid ...

‘Yankees Suck! Yankees Suck!’ «

I remember seeing these guys outside of Fenway. I didn’t realize so many of them were connected.

They were sold outside Fenway Park for $10 a shirt, and they sold very, very well. Wilson and LeMoine contend they had more money than they knew what to do with, and all of it was cash in hand. Looking to diversify his portfolio and grow his bankroll, Wilson began to spend some of his share in low-level drug deals. But this one was different; by his usual standards, this one was ambitious.

The sale of Baker is part of the plan devised by American league magnates to strengthen the Yankees and boost the game in New York, where interest has fallen off, due to the poor showing of the Giants and the tumbling fortunes of the Yankees. ...

Kelvin Herrera, Alex Rios infected as chickenpox hits Royals’ clubhouse

The Royals defense is so great they catch everything - even chicken pox!

Outfielder Alex Rios and All-Star reliever Kelvin Herrera both have been infected with the virus and could miss at least two weeks of action, as The Star first reported on Tuesday.

An examination on Monday of both players confirmed the diagnosis. Each man has been quarantined at his home in the area. The team spent the weekend conducting “damage control,” in the words of trainer Nick Kenney, making sure the rest of ...

HardballTalk: Unknown Cuban ballplayer sleeps outside of Dodger Stadium, hoping for a tryout

It’s a lesson in sheer determination. A baseball player from Cuba has been sleeping on the sidewalk outside Dodger Stadium for 17 days, waiting and dreaming about one thing: baseball . . . He’s determined to stay outside Dodger Stadium for as long as it takes, and has been working out as much as he can on the streets, hoping the owners will give him a shot on the field.

Attending a game would become a novelty, and the average fan who is the true supporter of the team ...

Schoenfield: Williams’ time running short with Nationals after loss - SweetSpot - ESPN

Matt Williams time in D.C. might not last longer than the rest of the season.

There’s a time to recognize that baseball is a long, six-month grind and as a manager you have to be aware not to burn out your bullpen. Then there’s a time to play with a little more urgency. That time is now for the Washington Nationals.

Somebody wake up Matt Williams and tell him.

James Lavender pitched a no-hit game for the [Cubs] in the first contest [of a doubleheader], only two men reaching base. OTP - September 2015: Making Sense Of The Republican Presidential Race: It’s Like Major League Baseball In August

For starters, you have to know what you are trying to “make happen” at this stage of the season.  No team is trying to win the World Series in August; instead the goal is to get in position to be one of the 10 (of 30) teams to make the playoffs where, as they say, anything can happen.  Likewise, 17 Republicans are not trying to be the final party nominee this early, they’re just trying to be one of the 3-5 candidates left standing next summer.  As in baseball, that’s really about ...

Miller’s Hard-Luck Streak Reaches 19 Starts Without a Win - The New York Times

I wonder which book he’s reading.

“Honestly I don’t know where all those stats sit,” Miller said. “I’m reading a book (pitching coach) Roger (McDowell) gave me. It’s all about how stats and all that stuff (don’t) really reflect on how you perform. You can make a good pitch and give up a hit. You want to be the best you can be, but it’s all about going out there and competing. The stats are a benefit on the side.”

Angels seek quick resolution for GM opening - The Orange County Register

Why not just let Mike Scioscia pick the new GM?

The Angels will not keep interim general manager Bill Stoneman in that position beyond this season.

Appellate court sides with MLB in minimum wage lawsuit

The district court granted MLB an initial victory in the Chen case last year, determining that FanFest was not subject to the FLSA and therefore was immune from the federal minimum wage and overtime requirements. Now, in a recent decision issued earlier this month, MLB has scored yet another victory with the Second Circuit Court of Appeals affirming the trial court’s finding that the FLSA does not apply to FanFest.

However, while the Chen decision certainly represents an important decision ...
