Former MLB pitcher Kevin Brown reportedly held two mail thieves at gunpoint until police arrived

Former MLB All-Star Kevin Brown is now a neighborhood watchdog.

According to Laura Corley of The Telegraph, Brown recently caught two mail thieves in his Macon, Georgia, neighborhood and held them at gunpoint until police arrived.

Sounds like he handled these thieves better than he handled David Ortiz in Game 7.

Jaffe collects Anthony Bourdain baseball highlights

[Bourdain’s] career-changing discovery of his writing voice was among the many that inspired me as I embarked upon my own change from graphic design to writing about baseball…

Bourdain was many things, among them a passionate baseball fan. While sorting through the numerous tributes and obituaries today, a few of his baseball-related clips came to my mind as worth sharing.

Seeing a baseball game in Japan has been on my bucket list since before the term “bucket list” existed. ...Read More...

Every MLB Logo Ranked, with Bonus Criticism by a Designer

I don’t want to say anything too negative about any of these logos, because they are all the hard work of talented people. The one one thing that I always think about is what the imagery is going to communicate, and I’m worried that if you were to view [the Tampa Bay Ray’ logo] from far away, it might look more like a logo for a seafood restaurant than a baseball team.

Deadspin: What Do We Think Of This Old Video Of An Umpire Handling An Extremely Pissed Terry Collins?

We need more of these umpire sound clips and less of A-Rod repeatedly exclaiming, “The Toddfather.”

The context is important. Utley’s notorious takeout slide in Game 2 of the 2015 National League Division Series nuked the right fibula of Mets infielder Ruben Tejada. Utley was suspended for the next two games of the series, and ultimately MLB instituted what has come to be called the Chase Utley Rule, essentially banning (but not eliminating) takeout slides. Syndergaard’s pitch in 2016 was ...

Nats ride Soto’s historic 2-HR game to split in NY

NEW YORK—The first game Juan Soto played in this season came at State Mutual Stadium, the home of the Braves’ Class A Rome affiliate, which seats a little more than 5,000 people. Soto offered a glimpse of his enormous potential in that game, when he homered for Hagerstown, but even then it would have been difficult to imagine how different his stage would be just two months later. And how well he would handle it.

On Wednesday night, Soto played for the first time in his career at Yankee ...

Dodgers, Rangers Brawl After Matt Kemp Runs Over Robinson Chirinos

The scuffle began when Kike Hernandez hit a base hit to the opposite field in the bottom of the third, sending Matt Kemp home for the Dodgers. But Kemp ran over Rangers catcher Robinson Chirinos.

The two nudged each other as they got up and soon Kemp pushed Chirinos who then tried throwing a punch back. The benches cleared as players tried to hold the two apart from each other.

Sandy Alderson takes responsibility for Mets’ woes

His team spiraling and questions about its short-term ceiling and big-picture path increasingly relevant, general manager Sandy Alderson took the blame Tuesday for the state of the Mets.

“We’re not satisfied and to date, the work that we’ve done hasn’t been successful,” Alderson said during a conference call. “I take full responsibility for where we are. I’m not happy about it. But at the same time, the job now is to figure out how to fix it and improve that. That’s what ...

Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera done for 2018 season with ruptured biceps tendon

Former two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera is done for the season.

During Tuesday night’s loss to the Minnesota Twins (MIN 6, DET 4), Cabrera suffered a ruptured left biceps tendon while taking a swing in the third inning. He will undergo season-ending surgery, the Detroit Tigers announced.

The contract is a big deal. Here’s one opinion on the issue:
Tigers still owe Miguel Cabrera a ton of money, but even with
the injury his contract isn’t as awful as you think

The beginning of the end came ...

Philadelphia Evening Public Ledger, June 13, 1918:

...to return to King Tyrus and his most logical successor, George Sisler, although a wonderful player, will not do, because of that same colorless stuff and lack of personality which characterizes the standing of Eddie Collins…The slugger always is popular with the masses, and the boy who can slam the pellet out of the lot or knock down a couple of infielders in every combat will get the big majority in the ...

Friend Wife will have to have the feed bag ready early today, for Mr. A. Fan will be rushing off to Oriole Park to see the Dunnmen get down to work at 6 o’clock. Today 6 o’clock starts will be inaugurated by Manager Dunn as an experiment.

Unwritten Rules Lead To Nine Unanswered Runs

Rather than wait for a relatively safe moment to retaliate—with two outs, or, like, tomorrow—and rather than retaliate by, uh, winning the game—Joe Musgrove plunked Chris Owings to lead off the bottom half.

Engel: From the cheap seats

A man after my heart, Mac Engel:

Other than bullying, intimidation or lying, I have no idea how the Rangers actually sell a single ticket to one of these afternoon games.

No explanation is acceptable why a game is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. first pitch in June in Texas at Global Meltdown Ballpark. Per the Farmer’s Almanac, the average temperature for June 10 in Arlington is, “You Don’t Want To Know.”

By the seventh inning, most of my face had melted into the plastic seat. Death was near, and ...

Orioles Activate Zach Britton

Britton will make his long-awaited season debut as soon as this evening. The southpaw reliever was sidelined to open the year after suffering an Achilles tear in offseason workouts. He’s playing on a $12MM salary in his final season of arbitration eligibility.

With the O’s limping out to the worst record in baseball to this point of the season, the hope will be that Britton can pitch his way into a useful trade chip this summer. Certainly, he has established a ceiling that few others have ...

Mensa Dork Has Bizarre Ideas to Fix Baseball

“For years, batters have sought to work deep counts – and rightly so for a number of reasons. All the while, the length of games has increased and the percentage of balls in play has decreased (due to the associated increase in strikeouts and walks). By introducing the concept of an expanding strike zone – where the strike zone starts small for every at-bat, then expands slightly after Strike 1, then expands slightly again after Strike 2 – batters would change their approach, knowing ...

Angels GM disputes Ohtani surgery report | MLB.com

Not so fast.

MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal on Monday spoke to Angels general manager Billy Eppler, who said, “There have been no changes in [Shohei] Ohtani’s diagnosis and neither our physicians nor medical staff have recommended [Tommy John surgery] or said it’s likely.”

On Sunday night, ESPN’s Pedro Gomez reported on SportsCenter that Ohtani will “probably” need elbow surgery, which would force Ohtani to miss the rest of the season and likely keep him off the mound for all of 2019, though ...

Report: Shohei Ohtani likely to have Tommy John surgery, will be out until 2020

The Angels were going to reevaluate him in three weeks. At this point, waiting the three weeks before surgery would likely not harm his timetable should surgery then be decided, so it’s possible that the Angels will still wait and see.

If Ohtani does go under the knife, however, it would be sad, sad ending to his breakout rookie season. Ohtani has wowed baseball by being its first effective two-way player in nearly a century, going 4-1 with a 3.10 ERA and a K/BB ratio of 61/20 in 49.1 ...

OTP 2018 June 11: Sports, politics conflicted 50 years ago with mourning of RFK’s death

If you think the intersection – and conflict – of sports and politics is something new, well, you haven’t been paying close enough attention to either for a very long time.

Don’t think so? Check out President Trump’s pardon of the controversial African-American heavyweight champion Jack Johnson, who held the title more than 100 years ago. His reign was consumed by the politics of the day. So it is no surprise that the debate over NFL players and the national anthem remains a divisive ...
