Cubs clinch postseason berth

Clinching on a Kelby Tomlinson strikeout 2,000 miles away isn’t exactly as dramatic as coming back on Mark Melancon at home would’ve been, but after watching the Cubs wander the desert for the past seven years, I’ll certainly take it.  Here’s hoping even better things lie ahead.

BLS: Madison Bumgarner gets into an intense staredown with ump Joe West

Get a room, fellas…

San Francisco Giants ace Madison Bumgarner has a reputation for being one of the more fiery pitchers in baseball. And Joe West has a reputation for being — well, how should we put this nicely? — the most contentious ump in the game. And that’s not just our opinion. You need only to search West’s name on the Internet to see words like “awful” and “idiocy.”

So you can see how the combination of Bumgarner and West could be combustible. And, to little surprise, it was ...

“The Babe” at Petco

An eventful night at the ballpark:

A woman who went to see the San Diego Padres left as a brand new madre. Petco Park announced that a baby boy was born during Thursday night’s game against the San Francisco Giants, the first in the ballpark’s 11-season history.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that the baby was born “around the third inning” and was named Levi. Donna Borowy, an on-staff nurse at Petco Park who is also a midwife, delivered the baby near the Padres store. Borowy told KGTV ...

Zuckerman: Papelbon suspended 3 games by MLB, appeals ruling

A dumbass gets suspended for being a dumbass. Good.

MLB’s ruling, made by senior vice president of standards and on-field operations Joe Garagiola Jr., cited Papelbon “throwing a pitch in the head area” of Machado in the ninth inning of Wednesday’s game, an offense the league office takes seriously.

The incident occurred two innings after Machado hit a towering, 2-run homer off Max Scherzer that gave the Orioles a 4-3 lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Baltimore’s All-Star third baseman ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-25-2015

Milwaukee Journal, September 25, 1915:

According to a statement given out by John G. Taylor Spink, publisher of the official organ of organized baseball, the Federal league is not paying any attention at all to its official schedule and are playing for the gate.
“The policy of the Federal league has been to play as many doubleheaders as possible where its games conflicted with the games played by National and American league clubs,” said Spink. “In this manner many of the better teams, ...

Ranking the 30 Minor League Systems Statistically | FanGraphs Baseball

I’ve always used Blengino’s stuff to add a different perspective to my prospect rankings. I’ve found he sometimes identifies players that haven’t been mentioned elsewhere. Be aware, though, his methods also have a higher miss rate.

It should be said up front that these purely statistical player rankings shouldn’t be taken as gospel. These lists basically constitute a master follow list, with traditional methods then used to tweak the order. There are no adjustments for park effects or ...

Front-office veteran Mike Hazen named GM of Red Sox

Someone has to get Dombrowski’s coffee in the morning.

The Boston Red Sox have hired Mike Hazen as general manager, the first big move by Dave Dombrowski since he took over as president of baseball operations in August.

Hazen has spent a decade in several areas of the team’s major league operations, including player acquisitions, player evaluation, contract negotiations, major league scouting and pro scouting.

“Over his 10 years with the Red Sox, Mike has proven to be an invaluable member of ...

Royals announce that reliever Greg Holland will miss remainder of the season

Greg Holland’s season is over.

The Royals announced Thursday that Holland will not pitch again this year due to an injury to his right elbow. The team said the severity of the injury will be determined next week when he is examined by Neil ElAttrache of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthapaedic Clinic in Los Angeles.

The prospect of Tommy John surgery looms over Holland, who was 3-2 with 32 saves and a 3.83 ERA this season.

100 years ago yesterday, a Pirates legend said farewell. Pittsburgh Gazette Times, September 24, 1915:

With Manager Fred Clarke playing in his old position, left field, for half of the game, the Pirates defeated the Boston Braves in an interesting contest yesterday. Fred went in to play at the request of many loyal fans and admirers and the day was observed in his honor, Mayor Armstrong taking a part in the ceremonies. Going to bat twice, Clarke got one hit, the veteran hitting the ball hard on ...

Exit velocity proves pitchers provide minimal power to long balls

The focus of this article is on the (somewhat minimal) effect of pitcher velocity on exit velocity, but the mechanics of StatCast are the most interesting to me.

Some clubs turn on their TrackMan system to scout an opponent’s batting practice because that information is deemed viable. Olshan said that, from measuring just 35 contacts’ worth of exit speeds and launch angles, it is possible to reliably estimate a player’s isolated power, which measures the rate at which a batter slugs ...

The changing face of the role of the MLB general manager

David Stearns sounds like he has the potential to be a very good GM. Being smart and analytical while possessing great people skills should be a minimum requirement of GM candidates. Ultimately, though, the ability to make smart judgments on players is a GM’s most important skill. How he makes those judgments is irrelevant. He can either be the best talent evaluator around or be astute enough to hire the best talent evaluators, both on the scouting side and analytics side.

“To see such a ...

The image that lingers is from the last time at Yogi’s last birthday party. Yogi looks up; he is 90. Rachel is 92. Their eyes meet. They say what they always say when they see each other.

“Safe,” Rachel says.

“Out,” Yogi says.

And then they hug for a long time.
