MLB is considering major changes to roster sizes | FOX Sports

A 26-man roster? It could be coming soon to a ballpark near you.

The players and owners are discussing the expansion of rosters from 25 players to 26 in exchange for September roster limits, according to sources familiar with the collective-bargaining negotiations.

Under the current rules, teams on Sept. 1 increase their 25-man active roster to the entire 40-man roster. The new limit likely would be 28, and the rules would permit teams to swap out players, though not on a daily basis, one ...

Heyman: Top 56 free agents with best contract guesses

1. Yoenis Cespedes, $110 million, 4 years. The best player on the market shouldn’t have trouble topping three years this time after betting on himself and winning with a Mets deal that contained an opt out following a year in which he was the highest paid position player in the NL ($27.5M). The Nats could return to the derby after missing out on him and (fortunately) Jason Heyward, too. Plus, the Dodgers and Giants are interested, raising the stakes.

2. Edwin Encarnacion, $92 million, 4 ...

You’d be hard-pressed to find a single person who’d have qualms with Scully’s honor … except for Scully, himself, of course.

When White House press secretary Josh Earnest called to tell Scully the news, the Dodgers’ legend responded:

“Are you sure? I’m just an old baseball announcer.”

Hurdle taking McCutchen’s future with Pirates ‘one day at a time’ | TribLIVE Mobile

“I’ll take it one day at a time,” Hurdle said. “I think any general manager that’s in a market similar to the one we’re in has to explore the possibility of (trading) players who have one or two years left on their contracts. You have to see what value is there to keep or to move.

“That’s the way we’re going to need to continue to operate. It’s the hard part of what we get to do.”

McCutchen, who’s on vacation in Hawaii, was unavailable for comment.

“Andrew has been very black and ...

Kate Upton has a point: Writers must do better with baseball awards voting | FOX Sports

Ken Rosenthal’s take.

No, Kate, I can’t explain it, either.

Judging voters too harshly is a slippery slope: I vehemently oppose penalizing anyone for holding an unpopular or even mistaken opinion. At the same time, it is the obligation of every voter to develop a sound rationale for his or her choices. Different answers are acceptable; it’s the process that matters.

The Tampa Bay voters, Bill Chastain of MLB.com and Fred Goodall of the Associated Press, cannot be held solely responsible ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-17-2016

Tacoma Times, November 17, 1916:

There was great interest among baseball men today in the action of the minor league board in adopting a resolution which would abolish the drafting rule. The resolution would stop drafting from the American Association, International league, and the Pacific Coast league.

Should the move be adopted by the majors, the three minors in question would be elevated to the rank of major leagues.

I know I’m looking at this from the perspective of a hundred years later, ...

Rick Porcello Doesn’t Care What Kate Upton Thinks About Cy Young Win « CBS Boston

However, Upton and Verlander do have a legitimate gripe, here … it’s mind-boggling that two writers felt Verlander didn’t belong on the ballot at all – which means they didn’t have him in their top-five – when 18 others voted him for first place. A player getting the most first-place votes and losing is sort of an indictment of the voting system – or the ones casting the ballots in the first place. However, Goodall and Chastain do not deserve to lose their jobs over having an ...

Scouting Report: As a basketball standout, Manning comes equipped with long levers and an athletic frame. Those traits help him on the mound, too, where he shows more coordination in his delivery than other pitchers with long arms and legs. His delivery can get a touch across his body at times, but he also creates deception and gets enough extension to the point that one evaluator said it looked like the 6-foot-6 righthander was shaking hands with his catcher. Texas Rangers: Five free-agent priorities the Rangers need to address | SportsDay

If he’s looking for a number three starter, these guys aren’t it.

My targets: TCU’s Andrew Cashner, an underperformer in San Diego, or possibly Brett Anderson, who was out most of 2016 with a back injury, then hampered by a blister. Anderson looked to be on the verge of a breakthrough in 2015, but his 2016 season was completely sidetracked. Think of him as a potential alternative to Derek Holland, but with a better walk rate and with more ability to get ground balls.

I’ve always liked Morton but he’s had some trouble staying on the field. $14 million clearly isn’t what it used to be.

The deal is for $14 million, with incentives of $625,000 each for 15, 20, 25 and 30 starts in each season, according to a source. The club has not confirmed the financial aspects of the agreement.

How the Dodgers’ Corey Seager is leading a revolution across baseball | FOX Sports

Seager is the best of the bunch. I would take his next 10 years over all others, though it’s close. If you like the defense of Lindor or the power potential of Correa, you can construct a convincing argument for them.

Seager is listed at 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, though in person he appears even bigger. His size has led to speculation that he will have to move off shortstop to a corner position. I don’t buy it. That assumption is made purely on the basis of his size. When you actually watch ...

If the White Sox Make Chris Sale is Available, the Cardinals Should Jump In - 101Sports.com

How many teams shouldn’t be inquiring about Sale? Not many.

If the Chicago White Sox are indeed willing to listen to offers for their outstanding lefty starter, Chris Sale, the Cardinals need to be on the other end of that conversation. Daily Beast: Murray Kempton on The Homecoming of Willie Mays

I’m Dan Gladdened that writers like Kempton didn’t just stick to politics.

When we hear it in the blues, it comes less often from the Delta than from Kansas City. It grows in the bones of scuffling, isolated country childhoods. It is much more broadly country Southern than it is uniquely black. The only baseball player before Jackie Robinson and Willie Mays who played with that almost brutal abandon we call the black style was Enos Slaughter of the Cardinals, a native of Roxboro, North ...

Add the Nats to the list of teams pursuing Sale, a list that likely includes the majority of teams in baseball.

Major-league sources confirmed the Nationals’ interest in Sale on Tuesday. The likelihood of a deal with the White Sox, however, is unknown.

Baseball and Brotherly Love

Recapping the confusing claims, Philadelphia’s polygonal version of town ball employed four bases plus a striker’s point, resembled the New England Game of round ball, and both could be stripped down to cat ball when not enough players were present to play the game for which the clubs had been formed. The Philadelphia Game was regarded as baseball of an infant sort, yet it was “simply … rounders,” … which in the west of England was the name for a game played in the east of England ...

Yoenis Cespedes, Jose Abreu on witness list in Cuban smuggling case

New York Mets slugger Yoenis Cespedes and Chicago White Sox star Jose Abreu are among the Major League Baseball figures on a U.S. witness list for an upcoming Cuban ballplayer smuggling trial….

A grand jury indictment says Cuban baseball players paid the smuggling ring more than $15 million to leave the communist-run island in secretive ventures that included surreptitious boat voyages.
