Dodgers add Yu Darvish to talented rotation | MLB.com

That’s what the Dodgers paid for, anyway: upside. They didn’t need Darvish, not really. They were just fine without him, which is why they weren’t willing to give up their top trio of prospects to get him. But this is clearly their year, and they weren’t about to let this year’s team head into October without every possible asset at their disposal. If Darvish adds value in October, the deal will be worth it. If he doesn’t? They might be good enough anyway.

Ken Rosenthal - All you buyers who remained disciplined, refused to succumb to the emotions….

Kenny, Kenny, Kenny. The idea that being disciplined is stupid is…stupid. Overpaying for incremental improvements squanders assets.

The Astros and the Dodgers are looking to be the 90’s Braves not the 2003 Marlins. The Dodgers and Astros? Wait didn’t the Dodgers make the big deal? They made a deal but they traded away fungible assets. They didn’t trade any top prospects. Instead, they stayed disciplined and waited for a deal where they could give fair value to acquire a helpful rental.

Rangers trade Jeremy Jeffress to Brewers

The Brewers have acquired right-handed reliever Jeremy Jeffress from the Rangers for Double-A reliever Tayler Scott, according to ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick and Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Jeremy Guthrie Heading Home

Another Players’ Tribune autobiography.

One night, after another miserable start, a teammate of mine — a close friend who shall remain nameless — sat me down and just put it out there.

“Hey, man,” he said, looking me in the eye, “I hate to say it, but maybe it’s time for you to take it to the house. This just isn’t for you anymore.”

I didn’t really know what to say, so I just kind of looked at him.

He continued, “Maybe you should just retire and pursue something else ...

Court document alleges that Pete Rose committed statutory rape in the 1970s

sworn statement by an unidentified woman, contained in a motion filed Monday in John Dowd’s defense against Pete Rose’s defamation lawsuit, alleges that Rose had a sexual relationship with the woman for several years in the 1970s, beginning before she turned 16.

In the majority of states, including Ohio—where both the woman and Rose lived at the time—the age of legal consent is 16, so her allegation amounts to statutory rape….

Rose acknowledged he had a sexual relationship with the woman in ...

Heyman | Dodgers And Rangers At An Impasse In Darvish Talks

The Dodgers, to this point, have been steadfast in their resolve to keep their top two prospects — pitcher Walker Buehler and outfielder Alex Verdugo — and the offers to the Rangers haven’t come close to enticing them, according to sources. The Dodgers in the past always declined to trade Corey Seager, Cody Bellinger, Joc Pederson and Julio Urias, and it seems the same is holding true now.

MLB commish casts doubt on David Ortiz’ ‘positive’ test | Boston Herald

“There were double digits of names — more than 10 — on that list, where we (MLB and the Players Association) knew that there were legitimate scientific questions about whether or not those were truly positives.”

Per the Mitchell Report, 13 of the positives were disputed by the Players Association.

“If in fact there were test results like that today on a player, and we tried to discipline them, there’d be a grievance over it (filed by the union),” Manfred said. “It would be ...

No, not Margaret Heckler.

Brad Joseph told a Milwaukee TV station he was at the game rooting for the visiting Chicago Cubs when a nachos-toting Christie “got in my face” after he heckled the governor.

Joseph said Christie initially said, “‘Why don’t you have another beer?’ which I thought was a ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-31-2017

Washington Times, July 31, 1917:

The Detroit ball cub [sic] came within a short distance of being obliged to pay over $1,000 to the Washington club for failure to arrive on time for a schedule [sic] game.

Like most big leaguers resting in Philadelphia, the Tigers all flocked to Atlantic City. There they enjoyed the crowds and the ocean breezes until far into the night. Little they recked of baseball as she is played in the major leagues. Little they cared for anything but mere summer breezes by ...

Cards stuck between a trade and a hard place

Mike Matheny, whose club has also struggled in the field, continues to give the optics of optimism. That’s part of his job. Part of his aura, too. In an interesting chat with writers before Sunday’s game, the manager got animated when talking about certain fans.

“Just the general baseball fans, it’s a shame when they make up their mind and make strong statements about where our club’s going to go,” he said, “because they don’t get to be really an active part of when something ...
