It’s throwback Wednesday. Let’s all harken back to 10 years ago when this type of hit piece was all the rage.

Ken Arneson - 10 Things I Believe About Baseball Without Evidence

At least he doesn’t believe that Martians are stealing his luggage!

Let me say that again: statistical analysis (that we in the public are aware of) takes the most important element of the sport, and ignores it.

It’s like having Newtonian physics without relativity and quantum mechanics. There’s a lot you can do with Newtonian physics, but at the extremes, it begins to break down, because it is ignoring some deeper, more fundamental truths.

Rob Parker: MLB’s New Trend, Leaving Out Black Managers

BBC might have been on board with Parker’s rant ... until he wondered aloud about Ausmus.

The Maddon hire isn’t the problem. He’s a veteran skipper who has had success. It’s the Molitor hiring that should make aspiring black and Hispanic managers feeling salty.

While a great player, Molitor doesn’t have any managerial experience - not in the minors or majors.

That’s a new trend in MLB, hiring guys who have never managed before. Some have never even been a coach on the minor league ...

Maury Brown: Florida Is A Bandwagon State, And The Worst At Supporting Pro Sports

For a moment, I thought Maury was offering to sell Florida back to the Spanish.

But, for pro sports, well…

Don’t hate me for this, hate the numbers. Consider the following: including partial seasons in the NFL, NHL, and NBA for 2014 and dating back to 2010, for leagues that have 30 teams (NBA, NHL, and MLB) and the NFL (32 teams), the nine professional sports teams in Florida average a ranking against their peers based upon attendance at an abysmal 21st. If not for the Heat (average ranking ...

Addison Russell, Peter O’Brien, Jason Adam, Blake Taylor talk about their experience being traded | MiLB.com News | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball

While new teammates are nice, there’s one aspect of being traded that can prove particularly tough: what to wear.

“That was a little bit of a process, because we had flown to Colorado Springs, so my truck was at the airport in Omaha,” Adam said. “I left it there for the rest of the season, and I flew straight into New Britain. I got in and watched the rest of the game and was just a normal guy on the team the next day.

“We had been on a five-day road trip and I had in my suitcase just enough ...

Fielding Bible and Gold Gloves | Joe Blogs

Joe Posnanski’s ballot.

I also know why Fielding Bible voters are averse to Jones — his defensive numbers are annually mediocre. The Dewan plus/minus system, which tries to measure how many plays a player makes against the league average, calculates that every single year since 2009 Jones has made FEWER plays than the average outfielder. His other defensive numbers are not very exciting either.

When you add in his arm and Good Plays Made, Jones is actually a little above-average in ...

EXCLUSIVE: Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez paid cousin Yuri Sucart nearly $1 million to keep quiet about his PED use - NY Daily News

Hey, Arod’s back.

Hell hath no fury like a cousin scorned.

Alex Rodriguez’s infamous “Cousin Yuri Sucart” threatened to expose the Yankee superstar’s doping secrets unless the scandal-ridden slugger coughed up “enormous sums of money,” according to court papers filed last week in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

Rodriguez caved, entering into a confidential settlement with Sucart on June 5, 2013, agreeing to pay Sucart one $700,000 payment for his silence, ...

The Yankees Found Another Way To Outspend Every Other Team

With limited avenues to spend their money, where have the Yankees turned now? Minor league free agents. Starting today, free agents can sign with any club and most fans will focus on the splashy big money major league signings. Sometimes, a former standout major leaguer that’s past him prime will sign a minor league deal with a Spring Training invite and fans may hold out hope this player can regain past form. Below even this radar are the often first time free agents with little to no big ...

Angels To Sign Cuban Infielder Roberto Baldoquin For $8MM Bonus

The Angels have reached an agreement with 20-year-old Cuban infielder Roberto Baldoquin on a record-setting $8MM bonus, reports MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez. The agreement is pending a physical and the $8MM bonus is the most ever for an amateur player under the current international signing rules.

Defending the Michael Cuddyer Qualifying Offer

It could be worse, right?

Should we assume that there is about a 10% chance that Cuddyer rejects the QO and tests the free agent market, the net value of the QO becomes even closer to zero, even before you consider what Cuddyer might return in a likely midseason trade.

Yankees have no plans to pursue free agents Pablo Sandoval, Jon Lester or Max Scherzer - NY Daily News

Put the Panda heads away, Yankees fans; Pablo Sandoval isn’t coming to the Bronx. And you can add Max Scherzer, Jon Lester and James Shields to that list while you’re at it.

According to a source, the Yankees have no plans to pursue either Scherzer or Lester, the top two free agents on the market this winter. Shields, the third-best free-agent starter, is also off the Bombers’ radar, as is Sandoval, the Giants’ postseason hero who was given a $15.3 million qualifying offer by San ...

Big money in Red Sox budget | Boston Herald

The team has some real holes in the rotation. As I’ve mentioned in other threads, I’d hate to see them invest big dollars on the available starting pitchers. That would be an almost impossible thing to sell to the fans, however.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-4-2014

Toledo News-Bee, November 4, 1914:

Wilbur Cooper, pitcher for the Pittsburg Pirates, was thrown from his horse [in McConnelsville, Ohio] Tuesday, breaking his right shoulder.

Cooper was a lefty, so at least it wasn’t his pitching shoulder. Wilbur had his worst season in 1915, going 5-16 with an ERA+ of 82 in 185.2 innings. His FIP was roughly the same in 1915 as it was in 1914, so it may have been bad luck. It may also have been a guy giving up more line drives and hard-hit balls because he ...
