Schuerholz on report of Hart declining GM job: “Not accurate” | www.ajc.com

Braves president John Schuerholz read a Yahoo Sports report that said interim general manager John Hart has turned down the Braves’ offer to take the job full-time, prompting the team to focus on assistant GM John Coppolella and Royals GM Dayton Moore as its primary targets for the position.
“At best the article was not accurate with either the facts or the assumptions,” Schuerholz said in an email to the AJC on Wednesday in response to a question about the report, which cited unnamed ...

Small missteps for Cards, 1 Giant leap from NL title | MLB.com

Buster Posey and the Giants already know how to win in October—even without all this help from the St. Louis Cardinals.

Strange as it might look sometimes, San Francisco finds a way to score just enough.

Morosi: Could Cain’s story make baseball king of sports world again?

Seriously thinking of changing my handle to Lorenzo Cain’s #1 Fan. Dude is fun to root for.

McCullough wrote that Cain was cut from the freshman basketball team, and his mother wouldn’t allow him to play football.

“If I would have made the basketball team, there’s no chance I would have played baseball,” Cain told McCullough. “I know that for sure. There’s no chance.”

Cain, 28, came from football country — Madison County High School in northern Florida and Tallahassee ...

Fangraphs (Sullivan): Defense Needed The Royals

It’s Jeff Sullivan, with GIFs, talking about defense on Fangraphs. Read it.

The Royals feel like an exaggeration of what defense can do. In this way I can only speak for myself, but when, say, Miguel Cabrera goes on one of his tears, I see him at the plate and I feel like he could hit a dinger at a moment’s notice. I can sense the threat of a slugger, because I’m aware of the range of possible outcomes. The Royals have made me sense a defense. The feeling I get is that every ball in play ...

NBC - Posnanski: Better Off Ned

Joe Posnanski ponders Ned Yost and, inter alia, the recent history of Royals managers:

The players, though, keep on winning for him. “We all know, Ned’s got our backs,” pitcher James Shields says. The Royals best overall player, Alex Gordon, talks at length about how big a role Yost played in his emergence after he was sent to the minors to learn how to play the outfield. “I know that his belief in me has been a big part of my story,” Gordon says. Ibanez, who was brought in more for ...

Rays’ Silverman counts on innovative spirit | TBO.com

Meet the new geek in charge. He’s going to need some luck. As Baseball America’s John Manual commented on Twitter “Friedman left at right time. Several years of rough drafts have left farm system thin. Dodgers have several more high-end prospects.” The Rays could have tough times on the horizon.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-15-2014

Milwaukee Journal, October 15, 1914:

More than $100,000 was lost and won by local [New York] sporting men through the failure of the Giants to win the National league pennant, and the subsequent failure of the Athletics to win the world’s series. The heaviest loser locally was Arnold Rothstein, who is said to have dropped $75,000. He bet heavily on the Giants to win the pennant, and then laid against the Braves in the world series.

I imagine he won that money back betting on the World Series ...

Los Angeles Dodgers stepping into 21st century with Andrew Friedman - ESPN Los Angeles

Mark Saxon’s excellent take on why this happened.

Two trade deadlines ago, the Los Angeles Dodgers got deep into discussions with the Los Angeles Angels to acquire second baseman Howie Kendrick.

The Angels were foundering and looking to deal expensive veterans for talent that could help replenish their bereft farm system. The Dodgers, living with aging Mark Ellis as their primary second baseman, felt in need of an upgrade. In the end, the Dodgers passed on the deal because they didn’t want to ...

Moneyball Comes to LA: Dodgers Hire Andrew Friedman | FanGraphs Baseball

Besides falling short of expectations, I bet this has as much to do with Colletti’s departure.

The team spent over $26 million on the foursome of Brian Wilson, Brandon League, J.P. Howell, and Chris Perez this year, hoping that group would form a strong setup core in front of cheap-and-dominant closer Kenley Jansen. No other team spent $26 million on their entire bullpen, closer included, so this was the most expensive collection of middle relievers baseball has ever seen.

And as a group, they ...

Los Angeles Dodgers hire ex-Tampa Bay Rays GM Andrew Friedman - ESPN Los Angeles

Ironically, sources say the Dodgers’ failed pursuit of a trade for Price this past summer only heightened their admiration of Friedman. Said one source: “They always asked for the right prospects. Not just the guys everybody knows, either.”

The Economist: The cult of the genius GM

In the wake of the Dodgers’ acquisition of Andrew Friedman, an argument that teams should never pay up for a general manager no matter how brilliant they are.

Informed decisionmaking in baseball is now essentially a commodity. If given the proper support staff and training, any writer for Baseball Prospectus or Fangraphs with the appropriate organisational and people-management skills could probably do a competent job…
The reason GMs make less money than players do isn’t because owners are ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-14-2014

Toledo News-Bee, October 14, 1914:

Mrs. Ed Konetchy, wife of the Pittsburg Pirate first baseman, on Wednesday admitted that she engineered the deal by which Koney transferred his affections from the Pirates to the Pittsburg Feds. Koney, she said, is to receive $7,500 a year on a three-year contract. The Pittsburg Feds gave her $1,000 for persuading Konetchy to jump, she said. Hans Wagner will play first in Koney’s place next year.

Konetchy isn’t famous, but he was one of the better first basemen ...

Report: Mets moving in fences at Citi Field again

This will be the second time the Mets have moved in the fences since the stadium opened in 2009. After the 2011 season, the Mets brought in the left field wall from 371 feet to 358 feet, right-center from 415 feet to 390 feet, and right field from 378 feet to 375 feet. While details of the upcoming changes aren’t yet known, they will be specific to the right field and right-center field fences.

I would hate the idea that my front office is spending time worrying about the dimensions of the ...

Return to New York? Yankees considering Omar Minaya for front office position

It’s not clear what role he would fill, but Boland notes that VP of baseball operations Mark Newman recently retired while longtime Yankee scout Gordon Blakeley left for a job with the Braves.

He certainly has done all he could do in his three seasons with the Padres.  I assume.  I mean, who knows?  If you told me with conviction that the Padres folded five years ago, I would probably believe you.

Mike Napoli to undergo facial surgery

The procedure, called bimaxillary advancement surgery, separates the front portions of the lower and upper jaw and moves them forward to allow for more room behind the tongue, reducing the chances of obstruction.

To combat sleep apnea.  This sounds deeply unpleasent.  And I certainly hope it does a little better than ‘reducing the chances’ for him continuing to have the issue.
