Cleveland Indians shave their heads in support of Mike Aviles’ daughter | cleveland.com

The Indians in a show of support for Mike Aviles and his daughter are shaving their heads.

“It’s a team thing,” said second baseman Jason Kipnis. “It started with Mike’s daughter because of what she’s going through. Unfortunately, she’s going to be losing her hair soon from chemotherapy and we all wanted to join in.”

Good Riddance to Little League

Stotz found the bigness of Little League to be awful in part because it seemed like an exploitative ploy that used kids’ athletic ambitions to fill adult-sized voids. As the league grew and became more corporate, there was less and less opportunity for kids to enjoy the thrill of low-stakes, good-natured organized competition. In his fascinating paper “ ‘A Diamond Is a Boy’s Best Friend’: The Rise of Little League Baseball, 1939-1964,” University of Chicago historian Michael H. ...

Charter Communications to offer Dodgers TV channel - LA Times

Charter Communications plans to soon begin offering the Los Angeles Dodgers TV channel, SportsNet LA, in Southern California, breaking the year-long impasse that has prevented thousands of baseball fans from watching their favorite team on TV.

“We are going to get the Dodgers on,” Charter Communications Chief Executive Tom Rutledge said Tuesday morning in an interview with the L.A. Times.

“We want the Dodgers on every outlet and we are committed to making that happen,” Rutledge said.

Braves, Dodgers To Swap Callaspo, Uribe In Six-Player Deal - MLB Trade Rumors

Trade talks between the Dodgers and Braves regarding Alberto Callaspo and Juan Uribe fell apart Tuesday morning after Callaspo vetoed the transaction, but talks rekindled just hours later after Callaspo had a change of heart, and the two sides have reportedly reached a deal, pending approval from the commissioner’s office. The Braves will acquire Uribe and right-hander Chris Withrow from the Dodgers in exchange for Callaspo, right-hander Juan Jaime and left-handers Ian Thomas and Eric Stults.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 5-27-2015

Pittsburgh Press, May 27, 1915:

The Cardinals have signed Roger Hornsby, the fast shortstop of the Denison (Tex.) team. He is the first man to be grabbed from the minors this year by a major league team.

That worked out fairly well for them.

The first batch of All-Star vote tallies are out and the Royals are dominating

Would be fitting if Royals fans stuffed the ballot for the All-Star Game in Cincinnati.

Fans of the Kansas City Royals spent the early part of the season defending their team — either because they weren’t getting enough respect after their 2014 World Series run or because they were being painted as villains after they made the benches clear a few times.

Now, it appears Royals fans have focused their energy on another plight: making sure they dominate All-Star game voting. MLB released the ...

Hardball Talk: Phillies Unhappy About Soft Music At Nationals Park

Sounds serious:

The Phillies have levied some complaints about the division rival Nationals, but they don’t have to do with anything done during a game. Rather, they feel that they are afforded less time for on-field batting practice at Nationals Park compared to other road parks, and they’re unhappy with the music selection as well, which has included Linda Rondstadt, Patrick Swayze, and Starland Vocal Band.

Some Roberta Flack might be in order the next time the Phillies visit.

ESPN: Crasnick: Harper Taking Baseball By Storm

Some notice being taken:

Some perspective is in order here: Harper is nine months younger than Kris Bryantand six months younger than Joc Pederson, the early frontrunners for National League Rookie of the Year. He will still be 22 years old when the Nationals play their regular-season finale against the Mets in early October. Of the 29 MLB Rookies of the Year since 2000 (not including Harper, who captured the honor in 2012), 20 were older than Harper will be at the end of this season, after four ...

Callaspo-for-Uribe trade falls through | www.ajc.com

He had a right to do it. That doesn’t mean he was right to do it.

A proposed multi-player trade centered around veteran infielders Alberto Callaspo of the Braves and Juan Uribe of the Dodgers fell through Tuesday morning and was not expected to be revived.

The deal died when Callaspo exercised his right to reject the trade, a person with the proposal said, confirming a FoxSports.com report. Callaspo, as a free agent who signed last winter, can’t be traded without written consent until after ...

Baseball’s best catchers visualized - Beyond the Box Score

This allows for reviewing players by position and plotting their salary against their WAR values. FanGraphs includes a measure that estimates the dollar value a player has delivered, which creates an apples-to-apples comparison—their pro-rated salary compared to their FanGraphs Dollar Value (FG$V). This makes it very easy to see who’s delivering value—and who isn’t.

The Pitcher’s Art « Our Game

The next ball that seemed to bother the batters was introduced by [Henry] McCormick, of the Stars, of Syracuse [winner of 59 games in 1877]. This young pitcher had Mike Dorgan, now of the New Yorks, for catcher. They shut out about all the crack clubs of the country that paid them a visit. The ball he deceived the batsmen with was a raise curve, now used by Radbourn, of the Bostons. He gave his field easy chances; the out-field had most of the work to do off his pitching. I never saw him pitch ...

Mets Pitch Advantages of a Six-Man Rotation - WSJ

A six-man rotation with a stacked bullpen won’t help the Mets score more runs.

“I’m trying not to have any more Tommy Johns,” Collins said. “I’m trying not to have any more sore shoulders. I’m trying to make sure we’re all rested and that, in September when we’re playing for something, your guys are out there pitching.”

Compared with those alternatives, the six-man rotation was the most palatable option. “You know what, they all nodded their heads, and whatever they said ...

Phillies fans ‘don’t understand the game,’ Ruben Amaro says

Come out and watch our team, you idiots!

In addition to keeping quiet about a long list of trade possibilities involving veterans, Amaro also remains adamant about not rushing prospects who could replace those veterans.

“I think we’re going to be conservative,” he said (via CSNPhilly.com).

Moreover, he doesn’t care that that won’t sit well with fans who are enduring a 19-28 start after last season’s 73-89 disappointment.

“They don’t understand the game,” Amaro said. “They ...

Notes: Teams should trade for Hamels now, while he’s hot | FOX Sports

Not exactly a buy low scenario.

Hamels’ average fastball velocity in May is 93.59 mph, a monthly figure he did not reach last season until August. His strikeout rate, over a full season, would rank among the best of his career.
His walk rate is dropping, and after allowing seven homers in his first three starts, his home run rate also is returning to normal. Hamels has allowed only one homer in his last seven outings, none in his last four.

Get him now, get him while he’s hot.

“Baseball makes a man move around fast. That has the effect of churning up his blood and heating it. Lime juice tends to act as a cooling influence and furthermore it aids in throwing off the blood impurities. If a player will drink the juice from one lime daily he never will be troubled with his blood.”

Sabermetric Research: Do defensive statistics overrate the importance of fielding?

Phil Birnbaum doesn’t like dWAR. Soon, if MLB allows researchers to access their new fielding data, dWAR for current seasons will be calculated in an entirely different manner.

Javier Baez heating up but is there a place for him?

Baez hit two home runs on Sunday against Tacoma, raising his batting average to .322, and now has five long balls since rejoining Iowa after the passing of his sister.

For the moment, Baez simply doesn’t have a place on the big league team—not that the Cubs have even determined he’s ready.

Bernie Williams Day reminds us Yankees’ glory days are over - Newsday

What the current Yankees are experiencing is separation anxiety. With an uncertain, unremarkable future ahead, they can’t seem to let go of the past. Hanging a new plaque every once in a while is a worthy hat-tip to the glory days. But too much of a good thing can be suffocating for the 2015 Yankees, even for Joe Girardi, who has the unique perspective of both playing with and managing those icons.

“I think it kind of went to pasture when Derek left,” Girardi said, “because it’s a whole new ...
