Miami Marlins new owners plan to cut payroll to $90 million | Miami Herald

Getting a team to take the contract *and* send young controllable players back won’t be an easy task.

If the current roster was left unchanged, next year’s payroll would approach $140 million, meaning ownership would need to eliminate about $50 million to get to the $90 million target figure they presented to owners. The owners could always choose to exceed or fall below $90 million.

An opening day payroll of $90 million would have ranked 26th of 30 teams in the majors last season, ahead of ...

For vanquished Nationals, an inning that will live in infamy | WaPo

“Some things like that happen and you just have to be able to deal with it,” Scherzer said. “This game – you can execute pitches and sometimes that’s not enough. You just got to keep going out there, stay within yourself and keep executing pitches. “

And sometimes, as the Nationals found out, you just can’t.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-13-2017

Albuquerque Evening Herald, October 13, 1917:

In one of the stormiest games ever played in a world’s series campaign, the Chicago White Sox came from behind today when defeat stared them in the face and beat the New York Giants by a score of 8 to 5...Salee [sic], the Giants’ twirler, held the Chicagos well in hand until the sixth inning and from there on they batted him to all parts of the field. Both teams fielded wretchedly at times.

There were nine total errors in this game, five of which ...

Cardinals focus on adding talent, not rebuilding | St. Louis Cardinals | stltoday.com

“We’re trying to do this without losing our stride,” said Mozeliak, who moved from GM to president of baseball operations this year. “Arguably, the last two years we have. But we’re going to try to get this right by not having that year of a timeout. … We’re not trying to copy someone. We’re unique. We believe this organization has been on a very, very nice run over the last 17 years and we want to continue that. I’m not using the phrase ‘rebuild’ or ‘redo the ...

Heyman | Jeter’s Hiring And Firing Decisions Annoy Loria

Loria is a bad ex.

When former Miami Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria handed over his seat to new owner Derek Jeter, he made some recommendations among the current staff, and for better or worse, Jeter has done mostly the opposite.

Loria, according to sources, suggested that Jeter keep high-ranking baseball people Mike Berger, Jeff McAvoy, Marc Delpiano and Jim Benedict, and that he let go longtime scouting director Stan Meek. Jeter has already fired the four Loria suggested he keep, and word is ...

Giants outfielder Benny Kauff, quoted in the New York World, October 12, 1917:

The series looks good to me now. I grabbed a bet of $2,000 to my $200 that we would win four straight. Looks good to me.

Nothing to see here, just a ballplayer writing about betting on his own team in the World Series against the late-1910s white Sox.

Bradford: The real reason Dave Dombrowski fired John Farrell | WEEI

It’s not complicated. John Farrell wasn’t Dave Dombrowski’s guy, and only one of them was leaving town.

The Red Sox president of baseball operations fired his manager Wednesday morning, offering meager crumbs of explanation during a morning press conference. But talking to players who witnessed the dynamic between the two over the course of the last seven months, it became pretty clear how we got here.

Players believed Dombrowski and Farrell didn’t get along. Whether their disagreements were ...

Farrell’s firing in Boston accentuates the longevity Showalter has had with Orioles - BaltimoreBaseball.com

Since Showalter was hired, the Yankees have had one manager, the Rays have had two, the Toronto Blue Jays have had three and the Red Sox are working on their fourth.

Who could have imagined 10 years ago that the Orioles would have one of the more stable managerial situations in baseball?

Of course, Showalter’s contract expires after next season, so things could change soon.

But, this offseason, several teams are looking for a new manager. And the Orioles, again, aren’t one of them.

Texas Rangers Slugger Joey Gallo Becomes the Ninth Player Since 2015 to Finish a Season with 40 or More Home Runs and Fewer Than 100 RBI

Dunn and Gallo can both be described as “Three True Outcomes” hitters who are most likely to end a plate appearance with either a walk, home run, or strikeout.  However, Gallo may be taking the “Three True Outcomes” hitting style to a new level as he walked 75 times while recording just 94 hits—less than half his 196 punchouts.  Moreover, Gallo’s 94 hits was a new low for a slugger who hit 40 or more home runs.  Not surprisingly, the slugger who held this dubious distinction before Gallo was ...

Silverman: Dave Dombrowski is on the clock now | Boston Herald

Maybe they could use a guy who loses his mind once in a while (or feigns it). I’d like to see someone in the Maddon/Bannister/Hurdle/Lovullo mold, a guy who gets the numbers but who really connects with players emotionally. It’s a tall order, I know.

The John Farrell who departed is the same John Farrell who not only endured his share of barbs without losing his mind and temper (at least in public) but who also won a World Series and two division titles while managing a baseball team in Boston.

Jorge Velandia emerges in Phillies’ search for manager

The Phillies manager’s job opened when Klentak reassigned Pete Mackanin, 66, to the front office last month. At the time, Klentak indicated that he was seeking a young perspective and a new style in the skipper’s office. Klentak, 37, is one of a growing number of young, analytically driven general managers in the game, and he appears to want a field manager of his generation that both he and a young roster can grow with as the team moves closer to contending.

Velandia is going to get a long, ...

Peter Gammons: Moving on from the anticipated departure of John Farrell - GammonsDaily.com

I don’t see Ausmus as a fit.

This is an important decision. The window here closes soon, where the Yankee window is just opening. The good young Red Sox players are soon going to make big coin. According to MLBTraderumors.com, Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley, Jr., Tyler Thornburg, Xander Bogaerts, Eduardo Rodriguez, Joe Kelly and Drew Pomeranz stand to make between $30-35M in arbitration this winter. If so, they will take the payroll within $20-25M of the luxury tax threshold. So forget Eric ...

Who the Boston Red Sox should hire as their next manager

No thank you [to Ron Gardenhire].

Alec Cora sounds interesting. I’m not sure Boston is the best first job though. Torey Lovullo was a missed opportunity. Most of the others are bad fits or tired retreads. One interesting name I heard is Mike Redmond. He got his first job out of the way. He’s open to sabermetrics. He also seems like a good guy who relates to players well.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-11-2017

Rogue River [Oregon] Courier, October 11, 2017:

The New York National league Giants trampled over the Chicago American league White Sox by a five to nothing score, making the series even up. Ferdinand Schupp, the Giant’s southpaw duplicated Benton’s shut out performance, by plastering a second coat of white-wash to the would-be victors…The series now stands, Chicago, 2; New York 2.

At this point, the White Sox hadn’t scored a run in 22 innings.

Stephen Strasburg’s legacy on line now - Washington Times

This is a weird on. What’s his real issue?

The news that, with Game 4 of the NLDS against the Cubs in Chicago Tuesday pushed back to Wednesday because of rain, that Strasburg, even though he is fully rested, will not start Game 4 was met with howls of laughter and tears — especially when manager Dusty Baker told reporters, that Strasburg is “feeling under the weather.”
