Mike Clevinger might not be starting next series.
Francona could be on the verge of having another dominant arm at his disposal in the mid to late innings, because Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports that All-Star Danny Salazar threw a bullpen session yesterday, will likely throw a live BP session, and could be ready to rejoin the team for the ALCS. Salazar also threw a bullpen session last Friday, so yesterday’s session means there weren’t any setbacks.

ICYMI, Kershaw on short rest for the Dodgers today.
Fairmont West Virginian, October 11, 1916:
RED SOX WIN FOURTH BIG SERIES GAME 6 TO 2
DODGERS GOT AWAY WITH LEAD OF TWO BUT HOMER BY GARDNER SPOILED IT
The rest of the linked article is a play-by-play account of the game. The home run was Gardner’s second in two days, and with the win, the Sox took a 3-1 series lead.
As the Braves near the end of their managerial search, a Major League source said it looks like Brian Snitker will remain in the role he handled on an interim basis this year.
The Braves are expected to announce their decision within the next few days, at a time that does not conflict with Major League Baseball’s postseason schedule. But as they near the completion of this selection process, it looks like Snitker has maintained the early advantage he had on the two external candidates—Bud ...

The Indians will have their hands full against the Blue Jays.
Corey Kluber walked up to me Monday night in the Indians clubhouse at Fenway Park, poured a beer over my head and said, “Thanks.”
I knew what he meant, but he was definitely thanking the wrong guy. He should have been thanking himself and his teammates for sweeping the Boston Red Sox in the American League Division Series.
On Sept. 17, I said the Indians were done. I said their postseason dreams were over before they began. I wrote ...

The Nationals are one victory from advancing to the National League Championship Series after pulling away from the Dodgers on Monday, 8-3. Anthony Rendon blasted a two-run homer and former Dodger Jayson Werth crushed a solo shot in a win that gave Washington a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five NL Division Series.
It’s the first time the Nats have led a postseason series since winning the opening game of the 2012 NLDS, and they did so by scoring eight runs, the most in a postseason game in club ...

The Giants did not go quietly into the good night.
Maybe this was supposed to happen in a game pitting the Major Leagues’ winningest team of the season against the most successful one of the past decade. Neither would yield easily.
Joe Panik’s double scored Brandon Crawford to snap a 13th-inning tie and lift the Giants to a 6-5 victory over the Cubs on Monday night in Game 3 of the National League Division Series. When the thoroughly entertained AT&T Park audience of 43,571 finally departed, ...

The narrative tone chosen by D’Acquisto and co-author Dave Jordan keeps the reader engaged, while everything works to keep the story as a whole moving forward. They also have a knack for dropping seemingly innocuous details that one wouldn’t think twice about, then rendering them relevant pages or even chapters later. It’s done subtly and artfully, as is the constant theme of tying in the music of the time. In many ways it reads more like a detective novel than an athlete’s autobiography, right ...Read More...

Arizona Republican, October 10, 1916:
GREATEST GAME IN HISTORY IS WON BY BOSTON
Breaking world’s series records and tearing traditions to shreds, the Boston Americans defeated the Brooklyn Nationals by a score of 2 to 1 in a 14-inning game here this afternoon. It was the second contest for the championship and was decided only after a struggle that surpassed in action any ever evolved in the fertile mind of a baseball fiction writer.
For more than two hours the teams, pennant winners in their ...
On a night when his team advanced to the American League Championship Series with a walk-off 7-6 win over the Rangers in 10 innings, Blue Jays starter Aaron Sanchez paid tribute to late Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez.
Sanchez, who allowed six runs while striking out five over 5 2/3 innings in his first postseason start, had “JDF16” written in white above the brim of his cap to represent Fernandez’s initials and uniform number.
Some great match-ups today. It’s a great day to watch some playoff baseball!
Someday Bogaerts will end up at third base. That day is years away.
I wonder if Xander Bogaerts will wind up a third baseman after all. He didn’t have a good year at shortstop according to defensive metrics, with a minus-0.1 WAR and minus-10 runs saved. It didn’t look that bad, but if you go by the numbers it wasn’t great. The one thing about defensive metrics is they tend to change from year to year. We’ve seen plenty of examples, including Dustin Pedroia. His defensive metrics ...

OK, so one (probably drunk) guy throws a can on the field. They identify and arrest him. Why do need to do anything else?
Toronto has been “extremely cooperative and I think is as committed as we are to make sure that we don’t have another incident like that,” Manfred said. The Blue Jays have said they are planning tougher security measures and alcohol policies at their stadium.

I asked White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest about Obama and the Cubs at the Wednesday briefing. Obama is a die-hard Sox fan. Less known: He has a mixed marriage. Michelle grew up on the Cubs.
“Well, the president is a loyal Chicago White Sox fan,” replied Earnest, taking a sip from his Kansas City Royals cup.
Bullpens are notoriously inconsistent. Bridich could do nothing and then see his relievers *rebound* into quality relievers again.
What will general manager Jeff Bridich do with disappointing right-handers Jason Motte and Chad Qualls? The two were signed as free agents last winter, Motte for two years/$10 million and Qualls for two years/$6 million. Both were injured and ineffective when healthy this past season. Will the Rockies simply eat the contracts and move on? It’s not in the Rockies’ ...

David Price’s outing on Friday begs a question that comes up in most Octobers: Are good players with poor postseason results the victims of small sample size, or are they wired in such a way that they’re less likely to perform well under the bright lights? I asked Bruce Bochy that question on Friday.
“It’s a little of both,” said the San Francisco skipper.“Some guys feel the pressure a bit more than others. You have to have the talent, but you also have to have that emotional ...

Somehow the Dodgers will make due without the Chris Heisey’s of the baseball world.
Heisey batted a career-low .182 last season. He said the frequent shuttle between Los Angeles and Oklahoma City “absolutely” affected his performance.
“It messes with your head a little when you’re up and down like that,” said Heisey, who hit .216 this season. “I understood. They explained to me early on it was probably going to be like that, the way their roster shaped up. There just wasn’t a spot ...

In his case, it looks like prudent judgement.
But while the ownership involvement and the obvious volatility (they’re about to hire their seventh GM in 13 years) are potential issues, the Arizona GM job is still seen as desirable by many. To reports about candidates being turned off by the seeming instability, one interested party who hasn’t been mentioned yet opined, “That’s BS. There are only 30 of these jobs.”
