MLB Rookie Report: Jameson Taillon, RHP, Pittsburgh Pirates - Minor League Ball

Taillon made 10 starts for Triple-A Indianapolis before moving up today and was terrific, posting a 2.04 ERA in 61.2 innings with a spectacular 61/6 K/BB, allowing a mere 44 hits. The numbers are impeccable; indeed, they are considerably better than anything Taillon did before he got hurt. The scouting reports back all that up: his 93-96 MPH fastball is fully restored, the big curve is there, and his change-up has improved significantly compared to where it was three years ago. His command of ...

Rangers stadium to cost Arlington well over $500m, local paper more concerned about its code name | Field of Schemes

Another rip off.

Add in the city’s costs from providing free (and property-tax-free) parking lots for the new stadium, plus possible costs from any shortfall in revenues that the Rangers would use to pay off their own share of stadium bonds (which will actually be sold by the city, presumably to get around paying income tax on things like naming rights and PSL sales), and the projected public cost is headed well north of half a billion dollars, though how far north is hard to say. When I have ...

The reason why the Royals have considered trading Yordano Ventura - Yahoo Sports

Another stupid skirmish.

Yordano Ventura, petulant child, roared back to life Tuesday night, when after missing Manny Machado twice with brushback pitches during his second at-bat he planted a 99-mph fastball in Machado’s ribs in the third. Were this some other pitcher, maybe any other, Machado would’ve shaken off the pain and hobbled to first base. That it happened to be someone who in three consecutive starts last season incited benches to clear provided the tinder, kindling and logs for a ...

Chicago Cubs’ lefty Jon Lester knows not to question Joe Madden - Chicago Cubs Blog- ESPN

“I told Joe I was fine (to go back out there). But I also told him that he’s the manager,” Lester said Monday night. “I’ve tried before with him, but I think I’ve won maybe once in two years. When he shakes my hand, I know it’s pretty much done, so there’s no point in arguing. Like I’ve always said, the manager makes those decisions. The players don’t.”

Perez, Shelby fail MLSB drug tests

A pair of draft prospects have tested positive during Major League Baseball’s Scouting Bureau’s pre-draft testing.

Industry sources have told Baseball America that shortstop Delvin Perez, the Puerto Rican shortstop who ranks No. 8 on the BA Top 500 Draft Prospects, failed the drug test administered by the Major League Scouting Bureau. Perez’s positive test was first reported by MLB Network’s Jon Heyman. Kentucky third baseman/second baseman JaVon Shelby tested positive for Adderall, a ...

What Are Baseball Managers Actually Doing?

Between the rise of data-driven decision-making, the inflation of player salaries and the increased influence of the front office, field managers have largely transformed into middle managers. And the old dictatorship has become more of a democracy.

“If you’re going to get hired as a manager now,” New York Yankees third baseman Chase Headley said, “you’d better be open to listening.”

Once-common strategies like sacrifice bunts and stolen bases have gone the way of flannel uniforms ...

Mock Draft 5.0

It’s crunch time, and two days out, the draft remains unsettled.

That’s not unprecedented. In 2014, the Astros went down to the last minute before deciding on Brady Aiken at No. 1 over Carlos Rodon or other choices such as Colin Moran. That one didn’t work out that year, but the Astros didn’t have a locked-down pre-draft deal with Aiken, as history shows.

The Phillies, picking first this year for the first time since 1998, also don’t appear to have a set pick. Philadelphia appears ...

Yard Goats Facing Season On The Road

Things have gone from bad to worse for the Hartford Yard Goats this season. Now, the team’s scenario is careering rapidly toward the worst case.

Hartford mayor Luke Bronin at a Monday press conference on Monday announced that the stadium’s developers, DoNo Hartford and Centerplan Cos., were being removed from the long-delayed project.

The announcement came after the developer took issue with the team’s release of the still-unfinished items at Dunkin Donuts Park, which was last scheduled ...

Rutherford’s Ready to Take the Next Step: How High Will He Go in the Draft? | 2080 Baseball

20/80 has been doing some interesting stuff, like this article.

While some evaluators, and even Blake himself, compare his game to fellow southern California prep product Christian Yelich (OF, Marlins), Rawnsley sees Rutherford ending up more like Reds right fielder Jay Bruce, projecting him as a plus hitter with plus power if he reaches his ceiling.

Outside of the bat, Rutherford shows five-tool potential, with a chance for average speed, defense and arm strength at maturity. Rawnsley grades ...

How Minnesota Twins’ Byron Buxton got his swing back

“Everything is starting to slow itself down a little bit more,” he said. “I’m starting to let the ball travel a little bit and putting the ball in play a little bit more.”

Turns out there’s much to be said for visualizing one-hop grounders to second.

“I’m exaggerating through the middle,” Buxton said, “which just allows me to envision where my hands and where my bat plane need to be. That way everything is in sync.”

There won’t be any winners in the James Shields trade | New York Post

Joel Sherman isn’t optimistic.

Shields is an innings eater, a pro and a righty – all of which were attractive because the White Sox rotation leans left and is weak at the bottom. But Shields’ indicators are that he is going the wrong way: his walk and homer rates are up and his strikeout rate is down. Even working home games in pitcher-friendly Petco Park the past two years have not made his overall numbers attractive, and his road numbers are revealing: 4.65 ERA/.442 opponents’ slugging ...

Michael Fulmer making Tigers rookie history | MLB.com

A year ago at this point, the 23-year-old right-hander was still another name in the Mets’ farm system. Not only is Fulmer now a frontline starter, he’s one of the biggest reasons for hope that the Tigers will be contenders this summer.

“He really has been dominant,” manager Brad Ausmus said. “He’s been our best pitcher, probably, over the last 3 1/2 weeks, whatever the stretch is. I don’t know that I would’ve predicted it from a young pitcher like that coming up, but he’s done an excellent ...

Lookout Landing: The King may be out longer than we thought.

en James Paxton was called up late last week, we weren’t sure at the time exactly why. We came to find out that the move corresponded with a 15-Day DL trip for Felix Hernandez. It was scary news, seeing as The King has only missed like one start in his ten-year career. With his velocity down more than one tick this year, and the command all over the place, Felix has looked…different than ever before in his career. Of course, that “different” isn’t the magical 2014 version, it’s a new, maybe ...

Tim Lincecum determined to be a major league starter again

“I think he threw the ball fine,” said Bud Black, the Angels’ special assistant to the general manager. “You could tell he might have been a little rusty the first innings but he looked good physically. The hip injury didn’t seem to be an issue and his arm motion looked the same. He was throwing 90 miles and his secondary pitches looked fine. He just needs to build some stamina.”

Sanchez’s success creates more tough decisions for Blue Jays - Sportsnet.ca

Meanwhile, the Blue Jays have a dilemma. They’ve found ways to ease Sanchez’s workload by mixing in extra days off on occasion. In theory the added rest could allow Sanchez to stay in the rotation a little longer than initially planned.

Success has complicated matters, since Sanchez keeps pitching deep into games. As manager John Gibbons notes, he’s averaging almost seven innings per start. One time to provide Sanchez with some rest would be around the all-star break, when teams get to ...

Mariners notebook: Cano’s bounce-back surge at one year and counting | The News Tribune

His decline will certainly come. For now, though, he’s back to being one of the best second baseman in baseball.

It was just about a year ago that Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano, a perennial All-Star, bottomed out in the mid-.230s in a dreadful start to the season.

Criticism was sharp that Cano, then 32, had started an inevitable decline with more than 8 1/2 years remaining on his 10-year deal. He spent much of last June muddling along to get out of the .230s before putting on a closing ...
