Silverman: Sale, Price, Porcello best Big 3 for now, but pale historically | Boston Herald

The Red Sox trio was pretty good last year. They aren’t as good as other recent trios for other teams.

Based on the most recent measurement available, 2016 performance, unless another top-flight starter switches teams before the start of the 2017 season, the Red Sox trio will rank as the best in the game. Using FanGraphs’ WAR from 2016, Porcello (5.2), Price (4.5) and Sale (5.2 with the White Sox) add up to a 14.9 WAR.
...
Siting atop the recent list is the 1996 Braves, whose best trio of John ...

MLB no-trade clauses stop deals, alter market | MLB.com

“Trades are already difficult to complete,” Indians president Chris Antonetti said, reflecting on the trade that wasn’t. “When you have to navigate another obstacle to get something done, it creates a big challenge.”

What to expect next as Rays still look to deal | Tampa Bay Times

Still trading starter, not Archer

Though they talked plenty about Archer, the Rays put sooooo much value in the combination of his skills, upside and contract (five years of control for $38.5 million) that there doesn’t seem to be any way they could feel they were getting enough for him. While teams are starting to recognize the high value the Rays see in Jake Odorizzi, that price isn’t likely to be met, either. That leaves the Rays pretty much where they were going into the meetings, most ...

How MLB’s New International Rules Change The Game | BaseballAmerica.com

Great work on the international signing rules by Ben Badler. Read the whole thing.

During the 2014-15 signing period, teams spent approximately $152 million on bonuses for players subject to the international bonus pools. That’s right in line with the aggregate bonus pool space in the new CBA.

So where do the owners save money? One, they effectively contain bonus growth. Second, the roughly $152 million is just what owners paid in signing bonuses. They also paid approximately $74 million in ...

Neal Huntington on the Pirates defensive alignments.

“You plan for the best, you evaluate what happens, and you react and adjust accordingly,” explained the Amherst College alum. “We’re working through how we’re going to redeploy, and how we’re going to improve the model, and how we improve the execution of that.”

As is the case with defensive shifts within the infield, buy-in is essential.

“We need to make sure we educate on why we’re doing what we’re doing — why we ...

Danny Espinosa traded to Angels

Busy day for Espinosa. He was a no-show at the team’s annual Winterfest event, angered by the Adam Eaton acquisition. Then the Nationals announced that they had non-tendered Ben Revere but offered contracts to other players including Danny Espinosa and Tanner Roark. Then they announced they had traded Espinosa for Angels prospects Austin Adams and Kyle McGowin.

Sandomir: Pressing the Off Button on an Indelible Marathon of Images

Richard Sandomir retires his sports media column. He’ll head over to the obit section.

I went to stadiums and arenas as I wished. I stood in production trucks, marveling at the way producers and directors turned live shots, replays and graphics into (nearly) seamless broadcasts. I was in Pat Summerall’s extraordinarily messy hotel room before the Super Bowl in 1992 when he confessed to fascinating feats of ribaldry and told me I was free to write it all.

I hung around the SNY booth at Citi ...

Dexter Fowler’s $82.5M deal with the Cardinals shows free agency is alive and well

Buying wins at the free agent price isn’t the optimal use of resources. It’s not just about greed; it’s about smart business.

If this sounds easier than it is, well, yeah. Baseball is a remarkably trying game. A swing can disappear. The yips can attack. Guarantees vanish overnight. Elbows can blow (which makes pre-free agency pitching extensions a bit more tolerable). And yet part of the strength of the MLB Players Association is its members’ willingness to shutter those fears and chase ...

Sarris—Going off the record at baseball’s winter meetings - Insider ($)

Some great insights into MLB front offices by Eno Harris.

“We were in an era where a lot of great statistical analysis was being done on the internet,” one respondent reminisced, “but now the internet is far behind right now due to the proprietary data the teams have.”

There was some brain drain, as many of yesterday’s blogging analysts now pepper front offices, such as Houston’s Mike Fast and Chicago’s Jeremy Greenhouse, among others. But if more data were available, this baseball person was ...

Winning in MLB is harder when everyone is smarter - SweetSpot- ESPN

A lot of good stuff. Read the whole thing.

Teams in the more recent period not only had a lower average win total in the 90-win season, but suffered a bigger decline the following season, were less likely to win more games or to win 90 again and more likely to have a losing season. Winning now is more ephemeral: Winning 92 games and making the playoffs as opposed to winning 85 and falling short is often not just the residue of clever team-building, but to the vagaries of luck, injuries and ...

Pitch boss on Fox baseball drama’s struggle and future | EW

Pitch finished it’s 10 episode run, with the possibility for a second season still unclear. Have people been watching?

With our show, the concept of the first female pitcher in the major leagues, it’s not something you can do every season, so you want to be able to start the next season with a different set of obstacles for her, and that would come with an injury and trying to get back and make the team. That is something that isn’t specific to the first female athlete, it’s any athlete, ...

El Paso Herald, December 9, 1916:

Baseball fans of the Isthmus of Panama are booming that section as an excellent location for one or more big training camps. It is claimed that the sanitary conditions of the canal zone, under the care and direction of the army and canal officials, are excellent, and that with the dry season extending from December to April the major league baseball players could not find a more satisfactory location for rounding into shape for their pennant battles.

WEEI: SOURCES: FORMER RED SOX MANAGER BOBBY VALENTINE BEING CONSIDERED FOR UNITED STATES AMBASSADOR TO JAPAN

Randy Marsh is not amused.

Such a move would be viewed as another unorthodox appointment by Trump, who named former World Wrestling Entertainment CEO Linda McMahon to serve as the administrator of the Small Business Administration Wednesday.

Yet Valentine’s history, and connections to Trump and Japan, make the possibility of such a decision very real.

The former Red Sox manager has known both Trump and his brother, Bob, since the early 1980’s. He is also very close to Anthony Scaramucci, ...

Arizona Diamondbacks GM Mike Hazen takes balanced approach

“We had plenty of opportunities to make changes,” Hazen said. “But ultimately we didn’t feel like any of those were the right thing to do for us. Some of those situations may be in the future, but right now nothing really made sense on the larger trade front. I’m not anticipating any of that changing, but you never know. Dave Dombrowski needs a trash-talking tutorial.

In the bottleneck on the way into the room Thursday morning, Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski spotted Yankees counterpart Brian Cashman. It had been less than 12 hours since word circulated the Yankees had agreed with Aroldis Chapman on a five-year, $86 million deal — a record for a reliever — and two days since Cashman had referred to the Red Sox as baseball’s Golden State Warriors with Chris Sale joining an already ...

Cardinals near deal with OF Dexter Fowler | MLB.com

Though the Cardinals did not make any transactions during their four-day stay at the Winter Meetings, it did not take long after their return to St. Louis for them to complete their pursuit of a new center fielder.

After a picture of Dexter Fowler boarding a flight from Las Vegas to St. Louis surfaced on social media, MLB.com confirmed through sources that Fowler was en route to St. Louis to undergo a physical on Friday. An agreement between the Cardinals and Fowler is already in place, though ...

JAYSON STARK ON THE WINTER MEETINGS: “I’M ONLY GOING TO REPORT INFORMATION THAT I AM CONFIDENT ABOUT”

That purpose is not necessarily be the first to report breaking news, but to get it right. For Stark, that involves staying calm, sane and “just making sure that I’m only going to report information that I am confident about.”

Not every reporter seems to stick to that mantra, especially with the competition in the building and the pressure social media brings to constantly be posting any morsel or piece of relevant information.
