OTP Politics November 2014: Mets Deny Bias in Ticket Official’s Firing

The Mets and their chief operating officer, Jeff Wilpon, in court papers filed Friday, denied all the accusations made in a lawsuit by a former senior ticket-sales executive who said that she had been discriminated against for being pregnant out of wedlock.

The executive, Leigh Castergine, said she had been fired in retaliation for complaining to the team’s human resources department.

“The termination of her employment,” the Mets and Wilpon said in their filings in United States ...

Fall Stars Game filled to brim with talent | MLB.com

One of favorite things to watch. If we could get the other AFL games on demand at MILB.com, I would be even happier.

The game, which starts at 5 p.m. MST/8 p.m. ET, will be broadcast on MLB Network and streamed live on MLB.com.

Tigers extend qualifying offers to Scherzer, V-Mart | MLB.com

The Tigers announced qualifying offers to free agents Max Scherzer and Victor Martinez among a flurry of moves Friday, including the loss of Andy Dirks off waivers to Toronto and Patrick McCoy off waivers to Baltimore.
Detroit also purchased the contract of outfielder Wynton Bernard from low Class A West Michigan and outrighted the contracts of utilityman Don Kelly and reliever Evan Reed to Triple-A Toledo. Shortstop Jose Iglesias, right-hander Drew VerHagen and relievers Bruce Rondon and Luke ...

Why the Dodgers should hang on to Andre Ethier - LA Times

So let’s judge a player’s potential on just 38 plate appearances.

Despite all the Pederson hype, though, he looked like anything but a can’t-miss kid after his late-season call-up. You never want to judge a player’s potential on just 38 plate appearances, but for now it’s impossible not to notice he went 4-for-28 with 11 strikeouts and nine walks. He turns 23 in April, it’s not like starting the year back in triple-A is going to ruin his career.

Giants’ foundation rock solid with architect Sabean | MLB.com

Shortly after Brian Sabean became general manager of the Giants, he orchestrated a trade that was arguably one of the most unpopular in franchise history. He sent third-base fan favorite Matt Williams to the Cleveland Indians in a deal that brought back at the time little-known second baseman Jeff Kent, infielder Jose Vizcaino and reliever Julian Tavarez.

The outrage among the folks in the Bay Area, including the media, was so strong that Sabean finally called a news conference to explain, ...

Blue Jays to play Reds in Olympic Stadium on April 3 and 4

Youppi!

Since a report from Montreal’s 98.5 FM’s Jeremy Filosa way back in mid-August that the Blue Jays were playing two spring training exhibition games at Olympic Stadium, there have been multiple confirmations by both Toronto (Shi Davidi) and national (Jon Morosi) reporters. Now we have a semi-official confirmation of the event: the two games now appear on both the Blue Jays’ and the Reds’ April schedules, as noticed by the eagle-eyed Rob Silver:

As of time of writing, event ...

2014-2015 MLB free agent power ranking

Where will they all sign?

4. Hanley Ramirez

With Derek Jeter gone, we have a new why-is-he-still-playing-shortstop champion. If Ramirez still insists on playing short wherever he goes, feel free to slide him one down on this list. Ramirez isn’t the average-fueled monster who hit .345 with 20 homers in a half-season in 2013, but he’s still an excellent power hitter in a free agent market that isn’t flush with them. And, okay, technically he can still play up the middle.

If Shin-Soo ...

Relix: Watch the Exact Moment the Phish Crowd Found Out the Giants Won the World Series

This is a pretty remarkable video, one that will surely give you chills if you have any connection to a sports team. During the first set of Phish’s show at San Francisco’s Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, the San Francisco Giants were on the verge of clinching their third World Series in five years, cementing themselves as a modern-era dynasty.

As “The Moma Dance” kicked in, Pablo Sandoval caught the final out in foul territory, setting off the celebration. In the age of social media, ...

Gabe Kapler, who has been a baseball analyst with Fox Sports 1 and appeared on the MLB whip around coverage, may be going to the Los Angeles Dodgers in some front office capacity, if his apparently accidental tweet is an indicator. Kapler sent out (and has since deleted) the following, that may have been intended as another direct message to ...

MLB.com - In pursuit of Maddon, Cubs dismiss Renteria

The money quote:

“Rick deserved to come back for another season as Cubs manager, and we said as much when we announced that he would be returning in 2015. We met with Rick two weeks ago for a long end-of-season evaluation and discussed plans for next season. We praised Rick to the media and to our season-ticket holders. These actions were made in good faith.

Sending Gordon | Joe Blogs

I will say this, though: If the Jirsch HAD sent Gordon home and Gordon HAD been thrown out by something comical like 30 or 40 feet, that would have created one hundred times the second-guessing that’s going on now. It would have been one of the greatest blunders in sports history. And people would still be wondering what was behind those other curtains, the ones that would never be opened.

Talking Ball with Jeffrey Radice – The Hardball Times

Few people ever have been more complicated—or controversial—than the late Dock Ellis. One moment, he could have been complaining publicly about something as trivial as the length of his hotel bed in San Francisco; the next, he might be visiting hardened criminals in the state penitentiary, doing his best to advise them on a straighter and narrower path.
It’s only natural that someone like Ellis would become the subject of a full-length documentary. Directed by Jeffrey Radice, No No: A ...

Deadline: World Series Ratings: Game 7 Scores Home Run For Fox

the most watched show on TV this year. Baseball is dead.

By far the best result of this year’s World Series, last night’s game is way, way up a stellar 70% from the 8.9/14 metered market results of Tuesday’s 8 PM – 11:30 PM Game 6. And with what looks to be the network’s best non-NFL rating in more than 3 years, Fox must be pretty happy that the last game of the third World Series win in 5-years by the Giants is steady with the World Series 2014 logoovernight results of the last ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-31-2014

United Press via Toledo News-Bee, October 31, 1914:

A sensation was sprung in baseball circles on Saturday when Connie Mack, manager of the Athletics, announced that he had asked waivers on Pitchers Bender, Plank and Coombs. These three men were the mainstay of the Philadelphia machine when it was at the height of its power.

There were unconfirmed reports [in Philadelphia] on Saturday that the three famous pitchers had been negotiating with the Feds and that this influenced Mack in his decision ...

The Players’ Tribune: Jeter: The Clean Up

Now that we’ve got that World Series thing out of the way, we can turn our attention to important baseball developments, like Derek Jeter cleaning out his locker:

There were a few special items I knew I wanted to take home: The two bats I used for my last hits in Yankee Stadium and last hit at Fenway Park, the bases the Red Sox gave me from my final game. There were other items, too. But more than any one thing, I know what I’ll miss most of all is the people. So after spending way too long ...

NY Times: In Rare Film, White Sox Before They Were Black Sox

The second segment is a series of “close-ups” of [1917 NL pennant winning] Giants filmed at the Polo Grounds. McGraw looked grimly at the camera and doffed his cap. Pitcher Ferdie Schupp was described on-screen as “the best twirler in the game;” right fielder Dave Robertson was said to “cover as much territory as a three-ring circus;” and the multisport star Jim Thorpe was introduced as the “Indian all-’round world champ.”

AP: Sandoval, Shields Among 121 Free Agents

Baseball’s business season began Thursday when 121 players become free agents, a group that includes Pablo Sandoval, Michael Morse, Jake Peavy, Sergio Romo and Ryan Vogelsong of the World Series champion San Francisco Giants. James Shields, Nori Aoki and Jason Frasor of the AL champion Kansas City Royals also were among the players who became free. Approximately 28 more players can become eligible, depending on contract options. Top free agent pitchers also include Max Scherzer and Jon ...

Boston.com: Youk Retires

We all knew this day was coming, he played this past season in Japan, but it’s still sad to see Youk go. At his peak he was one of the very best players in baseball, and a deserving member of two world series champion teams.

Former Red Sox infielder Kevin Youkilis is retiring, his agent says. Youkilis played parts of nine seasons in Boston and was a part of World Series teams in 2004 and ‘07. He was traded to the Chicago ...

No, Alex Gordon wouldn’t have scored an inside the park home run

No, Alex Gordon should not have been sent.

Perhaps a decision to run would have forced a poor throw home, but with a good throw Gordon would have been out easily. Regardless, that was a tremendous Game 7.
