All-or-nothing approach defines draftee Bregman - Houston Chronicle

Meet Alex Bregman.

Frank Anderson, father of big league pitcher Brett Anderson and a University of Houston assistant coach, has put on clinics at the Albuquerque Baseball Academy and also has seen Bregman since he was about 10 years old. He never worked as closely with Bregman as Brewer did, but even from afar, the same qualities were apparent. The Astros have a dirty-uniform, non-stop, get-it-done player - with talent to boot.

“The motor that he has that other people don’t have, and the drive ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-22-2015

Philadelphia Evening Public Ledger, December 22, 1915:

The delegates from the National, American and Federal Leagues will sign the peace agreement tonight, according to a magnate who left the meeting room for a few minutes late this afternoon.

The article goes on to detail the major pieces of the deal: Nobody who jumped will be blacklisted, all claims to contract jumpers are withdrawn, teams who had players jump will have to pay to get them back, Charles Weeghman gets the Cubs, Phil Ball gets ...

Brandon Phillips’ future with Reds uncertain | MLB.com

If the Reds didn’t want the complications of negotiating with Phillips to make a deal, they should have traded him before he earned his 10/5 rights. Sheldon’s talk about releasing him or threatening his playing time is just silly.

DSPN: The Yankees Want To Know If Their Fans Are Down With Fire Pits

With a third straight disappointing season in the books, the Yankees are hoping to improve—on the field of course, but also off the field. To that end they’ve “engaged a third party” to conduct a fan survey. This is pretty standard stuff, but because of the questions asked, and because it’s the Yankees, some of it is delightful.

For instance, the Yankees would like to know which single company comes to mind when Yankees fans think about the Yankees. I’m not sure why thinking about ...

Red Sox to retire Wade Boggs’ No. 26 next May

#26 is also the number of beers Wade Boggs can consumer in a 30 minute ceremony.

The Red Sox announced this afternoon that they will retire Wade Boggs’ No. 26 number in a ceremony on May 26.
Boggs, who wears a Red Sox cap on his Baseball Hall of Fame plaque in Cooperstown, N.Y., will have his number placed on the right-field roof facade at Fenway Park in a May 26 (get it?) ceremony next year.
The Red Sox’ criterion for placing uniform numbers on the right field facade have shifted in recent ...

Ten most notable MLB storylines to watch in 2016

This never would have happened if baseball had a salary cap.

The current deal between Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association expires in 347 days, and there are plenty of issues that must be resolved by the time the current deal runs out next Dec. 1, including the length of the schedule, draft-pick compensation and qualifying offers, and roster size.

The players are making more than ever and so are the owners, apparently, so for now, there is little indication that a work ...

The Economist: Cuban baseball crisis

The next day a big game is scheduled in the domestic baseball league, at Havana’s rickety 55,000-seat Latin American Stadium. It pits the hometown Industriales, Cuba’s answer to the New York Yankees, against a visiting club from nearby Matanzas. A few years ago the stands would have been packed. But today the outfield bleachers are empty, and only the rows of seats closest to the action appear even half-full. Bored-looking police drag on cigarettes. A group of hometown fans tries to rouse ...

OTP - 2015 December 21: 5 takeaways - Sanders swung, Clinton hit, and Raddatz was a star.

The press filing center at St. Anselm’s College in Manchester, New Hampshire, resembled the parking lot of a baseball stadium whose team had been eliminated from the playoffs. By the reality-TV standards of the Trump-headlined Republican mud-fights, the substance-heavy, we-all-agree-on-the-basics discourse of the third Democratic debate was a narcoleptic’s dream.

Harper: Picturing Yanks, Mets after 2019 free-agent class - NY Daily News

John Harper fantasizes about the Yankees and Mets future. He didn’t say it but I bet it also includes a pony and a unicorn.

Between the ever-rising cost of free agents this winter, the potential availability of so many bright young stars three years from now, and the Yankees’ wait for bad contracts to expire, the winter of 2018-19 is already the talk of baseball.

After all, imagine the bidding for free agents such as Bryce Harper, Jose Fernandez, Matt Harvey, Manny Machado, Dallas Keuchel, ...

Nick Cafardo | Sunday Baseball Notes: Sapient Global Markets is bringing risk management to major sports - The Boston Globe

Again, scouting information is usable data.

Donovan also talks about “artificial intelligence,” which he defines as “basically machines taking data sets and then predicting the future. Banks will look at a person’s credit card history and they’ll use artificial intelligence to understand that person and then market specific things to that person.”

Artificial intelligence can take data — such as comparing the statistics of David Price with Zack Greinke — and make an objective ...

“What gets lost in the shuffle sometimes is just how complex this industry can be. It’s a large infrastructure that branches out quickly. It’s almost like an iceberg with the GM on top. When you consider all the different facets of an organization – scouting, development, the business side, the major league club – there are a lot of moving parts. It’s not surprising different teams can take ...

Whicker: Dodgers’ Friedman is becoming a divisive figure in LA sports

Build long-term and go for it at the same time! Sign those high-cost free agents and maintain flexibility in future years!

Win the winter NOW, or else!!

Friedman envisions the Dodgers growing their own, with a harvest that will contend for years. That destination is fine. It’s the journey that’s losing us.

Cuban baseball crisis | The Economist

Manfred and Castro are two peas in a pod. Or not.

Yet for all the Cuban government’s rhetoric about America’s athletic imperialism, it may have an unlikely ally in MLB on the issues that concern it most. Despite MLB’s reputation as a fiercely capitalist industry worth $9 billion a year, the game’s economic model has much in common with Cuban-style socialist principles. To maintain fans’ interest, MLB needs a competitive balance between its rich and poor clubs. It accomplishes this by ...

Dodgers hit with record $43.6 million luxury tax bill

Not that the Dodgers seem to mind. According to calculations by MLB, Los Angeles had a record payroll of $297.6 million this year — benefts included — which far exceeds the $189 million threshold. Any way you slice it, that’s a lot of money to have tied up in a baseball team, and a good chunk of that turned out to be dead money. As we noted after the Dodgers activity at the trade deadline, the team owed $87.5 million just to players who were no longer on the team. Another good chunk was ...

5 big free agents who won’t sign for a while | MLB.com

This generation’s Jody Reed.

Ian Desmond, SS, 30
Do you evaluate a player in his walk year or his track record? That’s the question with Desmond.

As I see it, this is a good player who had a bad year (.674 OPS), but he will be a difference-maker again, and he could wind up being a relative bargain. Desmond and his agent just need to understand his market and know that certain clubs won’t be able to see past his 2015 performance. He likely won’t get an offer as good as the seven-year, $107 ...

Chances of deal for Brandon Phillips appear to be fading - The Washington Post

Phillips is staying in Cincy through 2018 if he wants to stay there.

Among the issues the Reds needed to resolve with Phillips was the question of money deferred in the six-year, $72.5 million contract extension he signed in 2012, according to that person. Phillips moved his family to Cincinnati year-round, and has played for the Reds since 2006, though some speculated he might be willing to leave the area to reunite with Dusty Baker, his former manager.
